On Set and Storms

On Set And Storms

“That's something every islander knows—there's always going to be another hurricane. Another storm. Everything buried will surface again, and everything you thought would last forever will come down eventually. But you rebuild. You dredge. You keep moving, keep adding new. That's how we go on living.”

– Roseanna M. White - “Yesterday's Tides”

“You can dance in the storm. Don't wait for the rain to be over before because it might take too long. You can can do it now. Wherever you are, right now, you can start, right now; this very moment.”

– Israelmore Ayivor

I grew up in South Texas where we were used to hurricanes. To this day, one of the most magical things I’ve ever experienced is standing outside when the eye has passed over me. There is such raw power and majesty to storms. They are terrifying and destructive but can impart great wisdom. As a Kemetic, I find myself closer to Set during storms and actively attempt to listen. Hurricane Harvey was one of the most terrible to hit the Coastal Bend in decades. I prayed to Set in the eye of that storm, before we lost power and I learned what had happened to Houston. I stood outside with arms outstretched, honoring His Sekhem and the Majesty of His natural domain. Suddenly a gust of wind blew an updraft beneath me. I felt validated and listened to. I went back inside and we lost power soon after. The Texas grid didn't get restored for another eight days. I felt Set’s presence in the storm and in the aftermath, destructive and harsh… but encouraging. “You will survive this. You have survived much worse with far less at your disposal.” When I would talk about hurricanes this way people would quickly become upset. They fail to see how a hurricane can be anything but terrible and I beg to differ. Storms disrupt our lives but teach us that we can rebuild. In the moment of impact, are we happy with the destruction? Absolutely not. Loss teaches us what we are capable of living with, as well as what we can live without. Storms are the immune system of the Earth, their purpose being to restore equilibrium on a large scale. Set is the storm that rends the dead bark and branches off of the Holy Sycamore. He does the same for us. By stripping away the excessive and superfluous, Set brings us closer to our inner strength and core values. I’ve often heard Set being associated with the ego but, in my experience, He takes a very active part in facilitating ego death during the Dark Night of the Soul. I’ve experienced this several times and I can safely say when all other guides have stepped away, I am still blanketed in Set’s Presence. He stands nearby, as a silent but distant sentinel. His Presence is enough to let me know I will be okay. Storms have a way of mirroring the Shadow archetype, forcing us to face our demons. We might not know when they will begin or end, but we do know that they are temporary. That disruption is sometimes exactly what we need and the more we fight it, the more we resist the growth that might lead us to the best chapter in life we’ve ever had. Experience has shown me that we can survive far more than we give ourselves credit for. Sometimes you have to Embrace Life.

Dua Set!

Granodiorite Statue Of The Goddess Sekhmet

Granodiorite Statue of the goddess Sekhmet

Like the combative fire spitting goddess the king vanquished Egypt’s enemies. Through her fire Sekhmet was associated with the royal uraeus cobra and the eye of the sun god Re. As the city of Thebes gained power, the priests gave Mut, consort of the God Amun, greater prominence so she was merged with Sekhmet. The two columns of hieroglyphs on either side of the legs of the goddess indicate that the statue was reused during the reign of king Shoshenq I (943-923 BC) of the 22nd Dynasty. It seems to have been uninscribed until then, as the surface does not show any trace of recarving. New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, reign of Amenhotep III, ca. 1391-1353 BC. From temple of Amenhotep III (reused in the temple of Mut) at Thebes. Now in the Egyptian Museum of Turin. Cat. 252

"You can hear my voice in the Storm.

You can feel my touch in the Wind.

You can taste my lust for life in the Waves.

Desert is not the barren land you think it is. It's alive and pulsing, something not many can see. Just as the Sea, you have to dive under the surface to find its true essence.

But are you willing to?

Are you willing to look me in the eyes and stay still, as I barren my teeth and stare through your soul, ready to devour you?

Or would you rather run away once again, frightened and unchanged?

You chose to stay. Wise choice.

I will offer you shelter in my Oasis.

I will guard you against all that is evil.

I will teach you unprecedented defiance.

I will show you unbearable horrors.

I will tell you unfathomable truths.

And know this: if your Path is meant to be a path of service, you'll serve us, somehow."

"Nurture yourself, Little One. Do not stifle your growth for the sake of conforming to others thoughts and opinions. Do not hold onto others for strength and security. You are not meant to be alone, that is true. However, you are also not meant to be consumable, torn apart for the ease of other's sensitivities or feelings. You are whole. You are your own."

This is beyond powerful, and so so needed. Thank you so much @divinecoyote for sharing! 🌩️

My Father is immense, inconceivable to the human mind. He stands over everything: life and death, calm and chaos, creation and destruction, the beginning and the end.

He is not just a storm or chaos, not just rage and anger and pain. He is the warmth received from others, the slow lapping of water within an oasis, the brief kiss on your cheek from the wind.

I asked for His help last night, and found myself floating in the middle of a small lake. Above me stretched Nut, stars twinkling in Her eyes. Surrounding me was a dense outpouring of foliage, swaying in a gentle breeze.

He came to me then, laying a hand above my heart. I could physically feel the warmth radiating from His hand and slowly encasing me. In my mind I could see my heart surrounded by soft and moist soil. It sank and from the remains sprouts began to form.

This is so powerful! Really gives you Sekhmet's vibes! ❤️‍🔥

A digital painting of Sekhmet being born from Ra's eye. Sekhmet is painted like fire in reds and oranges while Ra is blue. It is painted quite messily.

Hymn to Sēt-Typhōn

O Sēt-Typhōn you who created everything with your thunderous voice, you who did first control Gods' wrath, you who hold royal scepter over the heavens, you who are midpoint of the stars above, you who are the Power of Waters, Bringer of winds and storms, who flash through the night, you who shake the rocks, who makes the walls quake, you who did walk across unquenched, crackling fire Sēt-Typhōn, you are the dreaded sovereing over the firmament, you who are fearful, awesome, threatening, obscure and irresistable, hater of the wicked, Sēt-Typhōn, you of the great dýnamis who hold sovereingty over the Moirai, Great God, almighty one, praised be you who dwell in Ombos, generations after generations.

Dua Sutekh! 🌩️

Digital art, a waist-up of the Egyptian god of storms Sutekh / Set. He's a dark-skinned, lean man, looking at us, the audience. His hair is all braided and decorated with golden beads and threads. He's wearing a lot of Ancient Egypt-kind of jewelry around his neck, bracelets, a belt, all in gold and colorful gem beads. He is wearing a black, gold and blue headdress with the face of the Set animal on it (a vaguely canine / jackal looking animal but with longer and rounder ears, like a hare). Sutekh is looking at us with supernatural-looking eyes, with golden glowing pupils and a mischievous side smile. He's manipulating magic, golden sand in his hands, which is flying and swirling around him, in contrast with the nighttime background behind him

When I first read about this, I immediately thought about how much sense it makes. And how beautiful it is, when you think about it.

Thinking about the theory that Horus and Set were two of the first gods in the Egyptian pantheon and other gods were added around them later… and how them reconciling was always a consistent element even as the story changed from two brothers fighting for the throne to Horus avenging the death of his father… right up until the late period when people got uncomfortable with a foreigner god being so important in their pantheon and it changed to end with Set being cast out and kept weakened so he could never come back… a cycle of forgiveness eventually cut off by bigotry and hate…

Sekhmet, She who slays the enemies of Amun-Re

I request your vigor and zeal as I confront my difficulties that I've been faced with.

If my voice trembles, shift it into a mighty roar.

If my feet shake, steady them so I shall stand tall and proud.

May your belly be filled with the blood of your enemies, great lady of war.

And may I overcome this obstacle with fiery dynamism and unshatterable courage.

Dua Sekhmet!

This is so true, based on my personal experience with Seth. And being a Daughter of Loki, I must say it perfectly describes him as well (solar barque aside of course, but you know).

Set As a Champion of Mental Wellness

One of Set’s most prominent domains is that of a Storm God. Ancient Egypt was the most far-reaching civilization known to history, to the point that less time has passed between the life of Cleopatra and the present day than the construction of the Great Pyramid. Ancient Egyptians had archaeologists and engineers to study and repair structures that were already millennia old. For much of its history, life along the Nile was homeostatic and predictable, so much so that Set came to embody all that was disorderly and unexpected.

Think about the scene in the Book of Coming Forth by Day where Set plunges His spear into the throat of Apep. Set is fighting for Ra when He is incapable of defending Himself. During a time of mental crisis, we are not unlike the linen-bound Sokar, our greatest nature suppressed during the nadir of drastic, catalytic transformation. And Who is there for us in our darkest hour but the very Eye of the Storm?

Set As A Champion Of Mental Wellness

I recently drew a connection between storms and the release of stress hormones during traumatic moments. When we are in a dangerous or intense situation our adrenal glands release a chemical called cortisol which is essentially the “fight-or-flight” hormone. The release of cortisol is meant to ensure our survival until such time that the danger we’re facing passes, much like the role performed by Set on the Solar Barque.

Here’s the funny thing about that: danger always passes and, in that moment, a new kind of self-care is required. There comes a time when our bodies no longer need those stress hormones. Even though they once helped us survive during hardship they inevitably become armor that is otherwise detrimental and must be set aside. Consider that maybe the parts of you that are making life so hard are the remnants of those survival habits and that, even now, they are doing everything they can to keep you safe. They have no awareness that they’re making things worse. The key to healing, then, is loving the parts of you that are trying to kill you.

Set is a many-faced Netjer. The aspect of His nature I’m proposing is but one of many both within and beyond us. Set is simultaneously the tempest, the ship, and the very heart of the sailor. Were He much less than that He would not have been worshiped since before the dawn of the written word. That’s the funny thing about the perception of value: it is most prone to change depending on where we’re standing.

Mental illness is a multifaceted battle fought every single day. Some days offer ceasefires. On others, a violent storm can bring a reprieve. Many days can simply blend into one long continuum. Imagine this as a mountain, if you will, or the long hours of night mentioned in Ancient Egyptian papyri. Regardless of the imagery you choose, the implication remains the same.

This too shall pass.

I write this as I struggle with my own hours of night, from a place where it is easy to feel my prayers go unheard. Set is a bastion of the greatest form of strength – that which is self-begotten. Set is the one Netjer I do not have to pray to during hardship or crisis for one very simple reason: He is already and always there. It doesn’t matter whether you believe in the existence of Set or the Netjeru. What I offer you to take away from this is that no matter who you are or where you find yourself, you possess exactly what you require to take just one more step. That is what recovery and healing are, essentially, just taking one step at a time.

I offer you this lesson much as I offer my experience of it to Set. May it serve you well, my friends.

Dua Set!
