The Key to Everyone’s Hearts
"It's my friends. I promised I'd be there for them." - Aqua
Only Kingdom Hearts to get me free of my art block... I hope Kingdom Hearts III will come out soon, because I’ve just beaten all (and I mean all) the released games for, like, the 3rd time since the first remasters came out for the PS3, but it didn’t make the wait any easier! :( Come on, Nomura and Square-Enix, I wanna save Aqua and the others already. If you’d like, you can get a way larger version of this artwork (almost 6k pixels tall), by helping me out on Patreon! Just add a “ /pbrvs “ after patreon(dot)com

“Thinking of you, wherever you are We pray for our sorrows to end, and hope that our hearts will blend. Now I will step forward to realize this wish. And who knows, starting a new journey may not be so hard Or maybe it has already begun. There are many worlds. but they share the same sky one sky, one destiny.” - Kairi
Had so much fun drawing her new outfit, first time in a long while since I’ve mustered courage to do tiny details like her zipper and frilly undershirt, and the flannel patterns here and there.

please dont don’t hurt me
When you walk away You don’t hear me say, “Please, oh baby, don’t go.”
I'm not sure if this is on the other Dark Inferno but the horns on this one's head looks like the Kingdom Hearts emblem
Talked about this on Twitter a few days ago, but it really has me interested that whenever antagonists have told Sora that he’s weak on his own, Sora has never actually disagreed with them.
He always launches into his speech about his friends being his power- and they are. Sora’s bonds are his greatest strength. But in KH3 I think they are making a really smart move by possibly having this also become his greatest weakness. (This is one of the reasons I think Riku’s arc is so great- because they also had his greatest strength- the desire to protect what matters to him- be a fundamental part of his fall to darkness.) By the time DDD rolls around, Sora has completely internalized the idea that he is useless without his friends, and that none of his power comes from himself. This is a very dangerous belief, yet it’s also one that we see reinforced even by Sora’s friends.
Donald/Goofy KH3 quote: “Sora’s useless without us.”
Though they don’t mean any harm by it, nonetheless having the same type of sentiment expressed by both villains and friends (and friends turned villain) alike is good cause for Sora to have come to lack a belief in his own power.
In KH3, Xehanort seems to have realized that Sora is unstoppable as long as he has his friends, so what better way to break Sora than to remove the source of his strength? In the Final Battle trailer, Sora witnesses all his friends being taken from him, and in the end it seems he is left completely alone. This is where we see Sora’s greatest strength become his greatest weakness.
“I was only able to fight because everyone was by my side! I can’t do this alone.”
Sora has so much faith in the strength of his friends, yet so little faith in himself when he is left isolated. This is where I’m hoping we will see Riku helping Sora to grow and believe in his own strength- and we got a glimpse of it in the final trailer:
Riku saw firsthand Sora’s internal strength in KH1 when Sora was abandoned by his friends, fought his way into Hollow Bastion with nothing but a wooden sword, and the strength of his heart won the keyblade back from Riku. Much like Sora helped teach Riku to not isolate himself so much and accept the help of others, Riku might help teach Sora that even when alone he still has immense inner strength. Sora and Riku have represented both sides of the extremes- complete reliance on oneself (Riku) and complete reliance on others (Sora) - and show only a balance between the two is strongest.
Some Repliku, Riku, and SoRiku thoughts
Was reading through this article again, highly recommend: (8) Blowing Off Some Steam on Tumblr
And I realized I had some further analysis to contribute to this topic. Specifically with regards to how Repliku fits into all this.
I think it's interesting how Riku gives Way to the Dawn to Repliku. People already pointed out that it's like Riku doesn't need it anymore at this stage of his character arc (dawn has broke, he's embraced his right to exist in the Realm of Light), but Repliku still needed it. He still needed to reach his light in the dark. To reach his dawn. To help the person he knew he could never have a real relationship with, despite her meaning so much to him.
I think Riku empathized with that. I don't think it's a coincidence that both Riku and Repliku make very prominent self-sacrifices in this story.
(Notice the light-entwined-with-dark visual parallels here)
I also think it's very interesting how Riku instinctively knows why Repliku was sacrificing himself, and who for. Namine wasn't a topic Repliku and Riku discussed even once in any of their scenes together. That was always a Repliku/Sora discussion point. Yet Riku instinctively knows there's only one context in which he, the real Riku, would sacrifice himself like that, so he connects the dots almost immediately. Hence why Riku has the endgame scene where he picks up Namine. It's him honoring the last will and testament of his fellow hopeless romantic.
Also, and this might be me stretching a bit, but I feel like this final scene between Riku and Repliku can be read a very particular way. Repliku tells Riku someone else needs the vessel more, and that Riku knows what he means. Riku immediately connects the dots using his knowledge of his own heart and the person he cares about most to figure out what Repliku intended.
And finally, we get the last moment of this scene. Both boys are staring at each other, both are thinking about the person they love most and what they'd be willing to sacrifice for them. It's a long moment of silence, as there's nothing to be said. They understand each other completely. And then, as Repliku fades away, he gives one final sentiment.
You could say this is him saying good luck in the battles ahead, which would be valid, but given the context of this scene, and the long stretch of silent understanding that comes just before this line, I'm inclined to think he's talking about Riku's own love story. Repliku's reached the end of his tale and done all he can do for the one he loves, but Riku's story is yet unwritten. Knowing this, Repliku's parting words are to wish his Other good luck in the pursuit of his happily ever after.
That's my two cents on the topic, anyway.
Pooh Parallels/Analysis
From the moment Merlin brings Pooh’s book out, something about Sora’s reactions feel off. He is uncharacteristically subdued, especially at the thought that he’ll get to see his old friends. Compare his reaction in KH3 to his much more enthusiastic reaction in KH2:
In KH3 he almost looks…sad (remind you of another certain scene?). At first you might just write this off as him being worried about Pooh- and I’m sure some of it is that- but this vibe from Sora continues through the entire segment.
When Sora finds Pooh, the first thing Pooh says is “You’re home.” Such an odd thing too say, and it even confuses Sora for a moment:
“You’re home.” “Uh…huh? Good to see you, Pooh.”
Why would they have Pooh say something that even Sora finds strange (so that the audience takes notice)? Later Sora realizes that Pooh meant “home” as in his heart, but it also serves as a reference to the well known final line of KH2:
Pooh uses the same exact phrase as Kairi in both English and Japanese versions.

Was Watching Over the Garden Wall and decided to make a Sora piece.
Just some Kingdom Hearts chibi practice.
Practicing animation so I focused on what I wish would have happened between Sora and Roxas in Kingdom Hearts 3.
