Kuroo had called that night. The night after that, and for every night for about three weeks now. Since you were busy with the investigation and Kuroo with college, you two talked more through phone calls and texts than meeting up.

Maeda Akako and Ishii Fujita were the two other squad members. They weren't much trouble, except for how restless and reckless the two were. They seemed to be perfectly disciplined, which was a good thing. The squad had warmed up to you as much as you had to them.

You alternated patrolling the city with your squad so as to get to know them more. It worked with everyone except Suzuki. She answered to only what was asked, nothing more nothing less. Her answers were vague and she never talked about herself. You let it pass as it did not interfere with the investigation. And also, she had extraordinary skills and followed orders without questioning.

"L/N-san," Ishii called. "Inoue and I have a lead about Nekoma's whereabouts. We came across another ghoul during today's morning patrol. We got some info outta him."

Inoue handed you a notepad. The scribbled handwriting was hard to read but you could make out what was written.

"Are you two sure she's not lying? What if this was some false information to throw us off?" Maeda asked.

"Maeda is right," said Suzuki. "Usually, ghoul organizations give false information to the weak ghouls. This way, if they're caught by us it would be no threat to the organization."

"You're right Suzuki," you said. You were having second thoughts about your opinion. What if it was the real hideout? Or what if it was the hideout for the weaker ghouls? Surely, you could not let it go. You had to see the place empty of ghouls with your own eyes to believe the information was false.

"But, Suzuki and I will go there and make sure it's not a hideout. We can't rule out the possibility that the ghouls are there, right? Inoue, Ishii thank you for getting us a lead."

Inoue blushed and muttered a small thank you. Ishii, however, was frowning. "But, if that place turns out to be their actual hideout then how will you fight them? Won't you be overpowered?"

You opened your mouth to answer, but Suzuki was already talking. "We will be going undercover. And we will just be checking the area for ghoul activity. If our suspicions are confirmed, we will get back immediately and plan an attack. Am I right, L/N-san?"

You couldn't help but smile. "Yes, you are."

"Kuroo Tetsurou."

Yaku sounded dangerously calm. This was bad news.

"It has been four fucking weeks and you still haven't an idea how much the Doves know about us. Are you playing a joke?"

Tetsurou swallowed. Yaku was a total demon when he was angry. And Yaku looked beyond angry now. He looked at Kenma for help, but he smirked at Tetsurou and continued to play on his phone.

He smiled and hoped to lighten the mood. "Now, now. I can't just ask L/N-chan how much they know. It'll blow my cover."

Yaku looked unimpressed. Tetsurou continued.

"I'm gaining their trust. This takes some time, of course. L/N-chan is a Dove. One small slip up and I'll be rotting in Cochlea. I need more time Yaku, rushing things won't be good. I have to make sure they trust me. And then, slowly I'll leak everything they know about us."

Yaku raised an eyebrow. "And then?"

"Then what?"

"What will you do after getting what we want?"

Tetsurou laughed. It was cold and the sound bounced off the walls of the room. "You act so smart even though you are so stupid deep down. I'll kill them, of course! What else am I supposed to do?"

"You better."

The address Ishii and Inoue gave led to an abandoned, half-finished apartment complex. It was pretty far away from both the CCG and your home so you had made sure to carry your quinque. Apparently, the construction was stopped as the builder was involved in a sort of a gamble, lost all his money and could not pay his workers.

A few homeless people slept in sleeping bags near the thick cement pillars of the building. The sound of rain drops falling on the ground was audible despite the snoring.

Suzuki tugged on your sleeve causing you to stop walking. She pointed to a flight of stairs and tilted her head. Let's go upstairs.

You agreed and made your way as silently as possible. The stairs had no railings and were narrow. One had to be careful while climbing.

The next floor was empty. However, it stank of something rotten. You looked at Suzuki, she too seemed to notice something was off.

"L/N-san," Suzuki whispered. "I'll go check that side. You check here."

You agreed even though you knew splitting up was a bad idea. "If something bad happens, yell. Okay?"

Suzuki nodded, and the two of you split. You walked silently on the dust covered cement. Small spots of red caught your attention. Bending down, you rubbed a gloved finger over it. Dry. The reddish brown color was proof that someone was here not long ago. You looked around for more and found a few more spots that led you to an empty room. Or so you thought.

There was a soft gasp, which you later realized was your own. A body lay on the ground. The woman—you could tell from the unscratched face—had her throat slit open. Her arms and legs were bitten all over. The wall behind the corpse was painted in blood.

The smell of rotting flesh made bile rise up to your throat. As a ghoul investigator, you had seen worse than this. But, you could never get used to this.

The woman's eyes stared up at you, devoid of life. You bent down slowly and closed her eyes. Uttering a quick prayer, you searched the area for any kagune secretions or markings. You sent a quick text to your squad asking them come as soon as possible.

You got out of the room and searched for Suzuki. You found her talking to a man kneeling on the floor, with his hands behind his head.

"Suzuki, what's going on?" you asked.

She turned, which made it easy for you to get a look at the man. Your blood ran cold when the all-too-familiar hazel eyes met yours. Messy hair that stuck out in all directions, slanted eyebrows, broad shoulders-were too familiar.

Kuroo Tetsurou was kneeling behind Suzuki, hands behind his head, blood across his face and shirt.

"L/N?" Kuroo's eyes were wide like saucers.

Before you could speak, Suzuki asked, "You know L/N-san?"

He nodded. "Yes. We met in a cafe, I spilled their coffee. We met again and we became friends."

"Is what he's saying true L/N-san?"

"That's not how you put it, but, it's true nonetheless." You agreed.

A lopsided grin spread on Kuroo's face. When he spoke, he sounded like he was talking to a lost child. "You shouldn't be here, L/N-chan. It's dangerous."

You ignored him. Job first, Kuroo later.

"Why are you covered in blood? What are you even doing here?" A bloody corpse and a suspect covered in blood. You knew what it was, but, god you wanted to be wrong. You did not want Kuroo to be a ghoul.

"Uhh, I'll start with the second question first." Kuroo licked his lips. "A friend—enemy, to be precise—called me here. Said they wanted to 'set things right'. However, I did not know he wanted to do it by stabbing me." He shrugged a little at the end.

"Enemy? Stab you?"

"I have a lot of enemies. Most of them want me dead."

You took a deep breath. "You are a college student, Kuroo. Why would anyone want to kill you?"

"I may have pissed off the members of yakuza." He wouldn't look at you. His bangs covered one of eyes as he looked down.

"You-what?"

Kuroo opened his mouth to explain, but you cut him off. "No. Forget that. Don't talk- no. And stay here."

You dragged Suzuki away from him, stopping when you were out of his earshot. You whispered to her as low as possible: "I found a body of a woman in a room, on the other side of the building. I'm positive it was done by a ghoul."

Suzuki nodded, eyes dark. "Do you think he has anything to do with it?"

"I'm not a hundred percent sure he's human. We are somewhat friends, and-and why would a ghoul befriend an investigator?"

"I don't know, L/N-san. With what we have, it's safe to say he is a ghoul. And the story he told us is crap."

You rubbed your temples in frustration. His explanation was not true and you knew it. Kuroo Tetsurou was a cocky, laid back man with a heart of gold. Or so you thought. Or so he made you think.

Kuroo Tetsurou was not a ruthless, cold hearted ghoul who preyed on the innocent. Or so you wanted to believe.

"L/N-chan!" Kuroo's voice echoed in the empty building. "You might want to save me."

Surrounding Kuroo were five masked ghouls, their kagune ready to attack you three. Four of them slowly walked towards you and Suzuki. Their masks had the outline of a green snake curled on the side. The fifth one pulled up Kuroo by his shirt.

You had sent a text to your squad, you remembered. They must be on their way.

Kuroo looked at you, fear etched across his face. The ghoul holding him, shoved him forward. Kuroo stumbled.

"It's been a while since I have had some meat," he muttered. He had a gold snake on his mask unlike the others. The ghoul pushed his mask up a little and bit Kuroo's shoulder.
