I don't know where this idea I see in a lot of fanfics came from but Katara doesn't look much like her mother. She looks like Hakoda and Kanna. With the more squared off upper face with the sharper chin.
Sokka looks like Kya. His face is more oval shape moving into his chin with softer curve rather than a sharp angle.
Obviously it's not a one to one thing and I know it's a popular trope to compare a child to their dead parent, particularly if they are the same sex, but Katara seriously doesn't look much like Kya and I think it would be nice if someone told Sokka, the kid who can't remember Kya's face anymore, that he looks like her for once instead.

Katara taking over the role that her mother had in her tribe has me thinking about Sokka’s throwaway line about the fishhooks in his thumb. Someone had to help him bandage it up, especially if all the adults had gone to fight in the war. Katara would definitely have fulfilled the first aid giver role, and maybe if Sokka had tears in his eyes while sharp hooks are stuck in some of the most sensitive nerves in the body, she might tease him lightly, or pretend to not notice.
Maybe if they were younger, she might distract him with a song their mother used to sing while kissing booboos, gently wrapping wounds with linen gauze. Sokka might act like it was no big deal, false bravado and machismo still going strong, but maybe inside he’s grateful to his sister keeping his mother’s memory alive. Wearing the necklace every day, eyes the same shade of blue, singing the same song.
Even as his mother’s face and voice fades from his memory, he will never forget the love, love of his family. Of his mother, and his sister.
Katara has always been my favourite character and she doesnt deserve the hate just for mourning her mother.
Which is worse? Forgetting your own [mother’s] face, or being forced to witness it every day?

Trying to motivate back to draw so decided to draw some of the Alta characters. So far I'm drawing lu ten, kya(sokka and katara mother's), princess Yue, jet and sokka. Will draw other characters when I have good motivation.
I wonder how my oc is interacting with other Alta characters? Because my new ocs have 2 different timeline.Might post it later.

I am not saying that zuko is sokkas substitute for kya. or they look in any way similar! The whole concept here is that something was happening at the moment, be it how they were laying in bed, how the hair pooled over the pillow, or how sokka was able to hold onto it. It just brought sokka back. It triggered a memory, and suddenly he relived a brief memory. Making him suddenly miss his mother again. hope you enjoy!

AU where Zuko was born a Water Bender.
Call it the spirits fucking with Ozai, call it "technically the avatar is the master of all four elements and Zuko's a descendent of Roku".
Zuko was born a Water Bender. Zuko kept it secret from his father at the request of his mother.
Ursa went out of her way to hunt down a Water Bender to teach her son in secret, lying and saying that the Water Bender was just a nanny because Zuko required more work than Azula.
She got Kya, of the Southern Water Tribe.
Kya, who isn't actually a Water Bender.
Ozai knows his son is a bender, but he thinks he's being spited because Zuko refuses to Fire Bend near him. When he challenged Zuko to Agni Kai, he did it to "teach his son a lesson", but also to finally give Zuko an excuse to Fire Bend.
But Zuko didn't.
Zuko got burned and banished, and Kya went with him and Iroh.

i love this type of AU so much!! Like, Ursa running and taking little Zuko and Azula to the south pole is such a cool idea. I read an AU on ao3 recently where when Ursa realized she was going to have Azula she faked her death and took little 1 year old Zuko to the south pole. The AU also had Ursa running away when she was 7 or 8 from her parents and ending up on Kyoshi Island and meeting Kya and they dubbed each other sisters in that AU, but this post reminds me of that
au where ursa takes the kids and runs and goes to the south pole because idgaf and then she meets single mom kya whos husband tragically died in battle and they become fridged mom powercouple and also we have one set of siblings who have to go and save the avatar
