Ok i just started watching Macgyver (i was a convert via fanfic) and Ive only watched a few episodes but Ive already counted half a dozen times that Jack has teared up.... its just so sweet! I love it especially in such a conventionally masculine character

Welcome!! So excited to have you join in on the fun!

Oh gosh, I think that’s why my love for Jack Dalton knows no bounds. It would be so easy for him to just be a rough and tumble, masculine, military ooh-rah (yes, I know he’s a Delta not a Marine) type character, but he’s so much more than that. And even though he occasionally says things like “I’d tell you I love you, but you know I don’t do that kind of stuff” he’s a big ol’ liar liar pants on fire.

And his absolute panic as he lands the helicopter and races to where Mac landed on the highway after Mac’s improvised parasailing out of the truck carrying the bomb and bioweapon

Getting off track here, sorry, but I could write a dissertation on why Jack is my favorite. But lets move onto the next episode.

You can say whatever you want, but I’ll be forever grateful that the MacGyver writers decided to give the second episode of the series (the very first episode after the pilot) to Jack Dalton… to diving into his character and his past and so many lovely moments where he just knows his boy so well.

It might be my favorite cold open. Jack turns off the radio to express his concerns about Mac, to Mac privately.

he sits here and lies to Thornton’s face that Mac is alright, when he is very clearly not. When just hours ago, he was calling Mac on the same concerns that Thornton is expressing now.

Apparently leaves this meeting and goes right to find Mac. In Nicki’s apartment, and again calls Mac on the fact that he is not okay.

But I’m getting off track again…

Tears. The whole point of this was about tears. Well, we got them and they are glorious, and oh so painful

Not many shows would let “the muscle” cry, especially this early in the series. And the level of heartbreak. The minute details in the moments right before he cries, the devastation…

Jack + Being Protective of Mac (requested by anonymous)

you have no idea what you just unleashed. in this essay i will

first off, i just love him as an individual. ignoring (for now) the relationships he has with others, he himself is a gem of a character. Like (i think ) you and lailuh were talking about, the way that he openly expresses emotions- whether that be through tears, yelling, relief colouring his face, whatever, is just so brilliant. He's this ex-delta, ex-CIA super secret agent who's tradtionally known as "the muscle" and yet he still shows these emotions so openly. He's not afraid of what these emotions mean for his "image" because he's just so comfortable in himself that he's able to express them, something I deeply admire about him. Even in front of Matty, he's not afraid to show her what he's feeling, and she (typically) doesn't take advantage of that. Not only that, but his abilities (although often overshadowed or ignored...i'm still salty) aren't soley being strong. He's intelligent, even though he's the butt of most jokes, and he is knowledgeable in his craft. When it really comes down to it, Jack knows what he's doing, and he's confident in that fact. He has fears, he has his moments where he doesn't make the best decisions, but that doesn't ever take away from his character (until he left dot dot dot) and I think it's amazing how he, despite being a "side character", still has such a robust and unique personality. If I could rewrite the show, I would totally show Jack some more respect. He doesn't have to be shown being the only "not nerdy" one in the team all the time, he doesn't need to be constantly disrespected (bathroom tile salesman....really?).

next up is his relationships with other characters. I actually love that he takes time to really get to know each individual he interacts with (except the bad guys but like who cares about them) and that he forms a real, deep bond with the people he cares about. Did Mac and Jack's friendship start with them instantly being besites? Hell no! And that makes the relationship between these two so much stronger. Like he says, it was "forged in fire". He has real, human conflicts and actively tries to solve or at least reduce them, and that, to me, is an admirable trait. He's not perfect. He's not kind, sweet Jack all the time, because humans aren't always the same when they're under extreme stress! But he still tries his best not to burn bridges (tries is keyword), to make things he's done wrong right, and overall protect the people he cares about. He's not one-dimensional at all imo and he has so much potential to create long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships because he's such a good person.

i also believe he is fundamentally a good person, despite having so much red on his leger. He signed up for that, sure, but I think he's the type of person to still believe that people are naturally good even after seeing all the evil in the world. He, again, made mistakes, he screws things up, but he's still good at heart. He doesn't do things maliciously, he does them through a deep-seeded compassion.

Protective Jack vs Papa Jack

Inspired by this post of awesome protective Jack scenes, and @januarydivide asking me to explain my tags 😃

Protective Jack is hard edges and intense glares and guns.  He stands between Mac and danger, throws himself into the fray to keep Mac safe.  He grips Mac's belt when he leans out car windows and throws punches and shoots bad guys.  

Papa Jack is soft touches and concerned looks and worry.  He examines Mac for wounds with light hands and gently squeezes the back of his neck.  He checks that Mac's okay whenever they have a moment to breathe and reminds his boy of his worth and takes the Phoenix jet to Boston to be there for his partner.  

I’m going to trip you, man!

Mac flinches out of oblivion, and he thinks he might throw up. His entire body feels brutally jarred, shaken. He hit the ground and expected the agony of it to follow, but nothing comes.

Just a deep, unrelenting exhaustion.

He draws heavy, panting breaths into his flattened lungs.

The world shakes under him. It takes far too long for Mac to realize it’s not the world trembling, it’s him. Harsh shudders wrack his frame and all he has the strength to do is lay there and try to piece himself back together.

OR,

Mac has the worst acid trip of his life.

Another pair of hands wrap around Mac's other arm and heave him bodily into the open trunk.

He starts struggling again when the realization hits him. He kicks out with his legs when they’re maneuvered into the trunk and he gets a slap in the face for it that makes his vision go gray and fizzle out briefly.

When he comes back to his senses, the trunk slams shut and he’s in the dark, the confined space lit red by the taillights. The brightness of the lights makes the sharp pain in his skull spike fiercely and he cringes inward.

i really wanted to have my macgyver fic posted tonight but it's currently midnight and im traveling tomorrow so it's definitely not happening which MEANS. i get to share a snippet of it here for you guys :]

Mac purposefully avoids looking at his reflection, quickly turning his back to the small mirror hanging over the sink as he changes into the new clothes. He stumbles and almost falls over several times, unsteady on his feet and still working through the dizziness. He’s out of breath by the time he’s done, leaning heavily against the bathroom wall.

He stares at his hands again, covered in small cuts and dried mud. Mud from the grave he just crawled out of.

His breathing stutters in his chest. Mac pushes off the wall.

Still ignoring his reflection, he turns on the tap. He winces when he shoves his hands under the icy spray, uncaring about the temperature.

He doesn’t care. He just needs to get it off. He grabs a towel and starts scrubbing harshly. The water slowly becomes lukewarm, more bearable for his reddened fingers.

Mac pays it no mind. He stares at the brown water swirling in the drain.

He scrubs and scrubs and scrubs until his skin is pink, until the cuts caked in mud and grime are clean and bleeding again. The water turns from brown to pinkish. Mac’s hands are shaking again. The tremors run up his arms and he blinks through the tears blurring his vision.

It’s not enough.

Mac scrubs trying to get rid of the damned mud.

A sob catches in his throat when it just won’t come free.

It’s under his shredded fingernails. It hurts to scrub at them, but Mac doesn’t care about that.

The mud clings to him. To his clothes, to his skin, to his hair. Everywhere. It won’t come out. Mac can’t get it out.

His chest hitches. The tears burn hot in his eyes and a few escape when he blinks.

The skin of his hands is irritated and raw from so long under the water. The waterlogged towel is stained with blood and mud. Mac drops it like it burned him.

He finally looks up and meets his eyes in his reflection. He barely recognizes the face in front of him.

His face is pale and streaked with flaking dirt. His hair is tangled and nearly black with dried mud, the bright bathroom light glinting off the few blond strands that peek through. The eyes that stare back are blown wide, pupils dilated. They’re rimmed with red and shadowed purple, making them look slightly sunken and giving Mac a haunted appearance.

He’s sinking back in, the mud refusing to relinquish its hold on him. A shudder runs up Mac’s spine as he drags himself out of the mud. Slowly, painfully, clawing at the earth trying to find a hold to use to free himself. Small roots and grass are ripped loose in his destructive wake of panic.

Finally, finally, Mac’s legs pull free from the mud and scrambles back from the unmarked grave.

The unmarked grave that almost became his.

i am genuinely tweaking over the fact that macgyver (2016) practically glosses over the fact that Mac was straight up!!! Lying!!!! to bozer for YEARS.

this would have been such good material to use to explore Mac and Bozer's relationship, and how complex the situation was bc YES it feels like a betrayal but it's also Mac simply protecting Bozer from his dangerous life and still keeping him close despite the danger, despite the very real possibility of bozer accidentally finding out or simply using bozer to get to Mac.

NOT TO MENTION. Boze was Mac's only link to something not remotely related to his job!!! the only bit of normal in his chaotic life!!!!

both of them having to find their footing again after the reveal bc nothing can go back to normal. like. bozer thinking back to all the weird injuries mac returned home with from his think tank business trips, all the lies, all the secrecy, all the time. justified hurt on bozer's side as well as understanding bc if the roles were reversed wouldn't bozer also lie to keep his closest friend safe? understanding the reason doesn't make the years of lies hurt any less.

Mac’s hands are red with blood. It’s everywhere and there is so much of it. It pools around him, the puddle growing, spreading. He can’t staunch the flow from where it stems. A tiny little hole aimed for the heart. A heart that stopped beating moments ago.

The blood no longer comes in spurts to match the frantic rhythm of a racing heartbeat. It just drains out of the body in front of Mac.

Jack’s body, his numb brain reminds him.

It loops around endlessly, a record on a turntable. Jack’s dead, Jack’s dead, Jack’s dead.

Jack’s dead because Mac’s plan failed. Jack’s dead because of him.

I successfully got my sister to watch the last of us with me and now a tlou au with Mac and Jack is brewing in my head and there's nothing I can do to stop it.

I already have my mac sees ghosts au and too many wips to finish BUT this one is soooooo compelling. Jack as Joel and Mac as Ellie as they travel halfway across the country together, with Jack slowly starting to care so much about this random kid he didn't even want to be saddled with at first.

Reminder to myself and others that when you’re challenging yourself to learn something new (in my case, likenesses) you will probably end up feeling frustrated and dissatisfied. This does not mean you’re stupid, or bad at (blank), or are failing to learn. Progress isn’t just in the pretty stuff, it’s in the ugly stuff too.

in other news, I have binge-watched Macgyver for the first time and am slightly obsessed

from s1e06, just rewatched it so I had to make a stupid doodle

I love how both of them are very obviously stressed out of their minds during this scene, but Mac shows it by looking like he’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown while Jack just keeps smiling. Ofc Jack has his moments too where he’s obviously losing it a bit, but overall the scene gives me the vibes of when you’re in an “oh shit” situation but you see your friend/sibling freaking out so you know you have to act chill lol.

you know whenever Murdoc is on screen that it’s either going to be the most traumatizing or the funniest stuff ever.

I love to imagine a cut between Jack and the others stressing out like: “I can’t believe Mac’s in the hand of that psychopath again, he could be doing anything to our boy :(((“

and meanwhile Mac’s being a long-suffering couple’s therapist (who’s not paid enough for this)

sketch is roughly based on a moment in a fic I’m writing where she’s on her laptop looking through Mac’s autopsy report after (he fakes) his death, so I tried to capture the slightly eerie lighting and the grim intensity on her face. Still learning so I’m not 100% happy with the lighting but I gave it a go at least
