Protective Jack vs Papa Jack

Inspired by this post of awesome protective Jack scenes, and @januarydivide asking me to explain my tags 😃

Protective Jack is hard edges and intense glares and guns.  He stands between Mac and danger, throws himself into the fray to keep Mac safe.  He grips Mac's belt when he leans out car windows and throws punches and shoots bad guys.  

Papa Jack is soft touches and concerned looks and worry.  He examines Mac for wounds with light hands and gently squeezes the back of his neck.  He checks that Mac's okay whenever they have a moment to breathe and reminds his boy of his worth and takes the Phoenix jet to Boston to be there for his partner.

you have no idea what you just unleashed. in this essay i will

first off, i just love him as an individual. ignoring (for now) the relationships he has with others, he himself is a gem of a character. Like (i think ) you and lailuh were talking about, the way that he openly expresses emotions- whether that be through tears, yelling, relief colouring his face, whatever, is just so brilliant. He's this ex-delta, ex-CIA super secret agent who's tradtionally known as "the muscle" and yet he still shows these emotions so openly. He's not afraid of what these emotions mean for his "image" because he's just so comfortable in himself that he's able to express them, something I deeply admire about him. Even in front of Matty, he's not afraid to show her what he's feeling, and she (typically) doesn't take advantage of that. Not only that, but his abilities (although often overshadowed or ignored...i'm still salty) aren't soley being strong. He's intelligent, even though he's the butt of most jokes, and he is knowledgeable in his craft. When it really comes down to it, Jack knows what he's doing, and he's confident in that fact. He has fears, he has his moments where he doesn't make the best decisions, but that doesn't ever take away from his character (until he left dot dot dot) and I think it's amazing how he, despite being a "side character", still has such a robust and unique personality. If I could rewrite the show, I would totally show Jack some more respect. He doesn't have to be shown being the only "not nerdy" one in the team all the time, he doesn't need to be constantly disrespected (bathroom tile salesman....really?).

next up is his relationships with other characters. I actually love that he takes time to really get to know each individual he interacts with (except the bad guys but like who cares about them) and that he forms a real, deep bond with the people he cares about. Did Mac and Jack's friendship start with them instantly being besites? Hell no! And that makes the relationship between these two so much stronger. Like he says, it was "forged in fire". He has real, human conflicts and actively tries to solve or at least reduce them, and that, to me, is an admirable trait. He's not perfect. He's not kind, sweet Jack all the time, because humans aren't always the same when they're under extreme stress! But he still tries his best not to burn bridges (tries is keyword), to make things he's done wrong right, and overall protect the people he cares about. He's not one-dimensional at all imo and he has so much potential to create long-lasting, mutually beneficial relationships because he's such a good person.

i also believe he is fundamentally a good person, despite having so much red on his leger. He signed up for that, sure, but I think he's the type of person to still believe that people are naturally good even after seeing all the evil in the world. He, again, made mistakes, he screws things up, but he's still good at heart. He doesn't do things maliciously, he does them through a deep-seeded compassion.

Ok i just started watching Macgyver (i was a convert via fanfic) and Ive only watched a few episodes but Ive already counted half a dozen times that Jack has teared up.... its just so sweet! I love it especially in such a conventionally masculine character

Oh gosh, I think that’s why my love for Jack Dalton knows no bounds. It would be so easy for him to just be a rough and tumble, masculine, military ooh-rah (yes, I know he’s a Delta not a Marine) type character, but he’s so much more than that. And even though he occasionally says things like “I’d tell you I love you, but you know I don’t do that kind of stuff” he’s a big ol’ liar liar pants on fire.

And his absolute panic as he lands the helicopter and races to where Mac landed on the highway after Mac’s improvised parasailing out of the truck carrying the bomb and bioweapon

Getting off track here, sorry, but I could write a dissertation on why Jack is my favorite. But lets move onto the next episode.

You can say whatever you want, but I’ll be forever grateful that the MacGyver writers decided to give the second episode of the series (the very first episode after the pilot) to Jack Dalton… to diving into his character and his past and so many lovely moments where he just knows his boy so well.

It might be my favorite cold open. Jack turns off the radio to express his concerns about Mac, to Mac privately.

he sits here and lies to Thornton’s face that Mac is alright, when he is very clearly not. When just hours ago, he was calling Mac on the same concerns that Thornton is expressing now.

Apparently leaves this meeting and goes right to find Mac. In Nicki’s apartment, and again calls Mac on the fact that he is not okay.

But I’m getting off track again…

Tears. The whole point of this was about tears. Well, we got them and they are glorious, and oh so painful

Not many shows would let “the muscle” cry, especially this early in the series. And the level of heartbreak. The minute details in the moments right before he cries, the devastation…

excuse me while I cry for minute.

Cairo Day is a week-long MacGyver fandom celebration which usually takes place during the week of April 14th, the airdate of the season one finale. ok ngl i write my most unhinged works on there that will never see the light of day. like all my works are self indulgent but these are just so much worse. however, for you, beloved, i shall offer a snippet or two.

"It started with a panicked knock at the front door of the office, an unintelligible stream of words coming out from the armoured body of Alphonse, who was currently cradling his older brother in his arms. "

“Hiya, Boss.” He smiled, rubbing his head on the spot where he had hit it. “What a surprise to see you here.” 

Sighing, he placed his bag on the nearest desk, taking a few steps towards the interior of the office, threading his arms out of his coat. Eventually, he spoke:

“What did you do?”

"No.” That was the answer that Peter had received when he asked to go to school today, even despite being slightly sick. 

So, instead of being on a field trip to wherever they were going, he was on his third day moping around the tower, trying to convince anyone that would listen that he was fine. 

Nobody believed him, oddly. Maybe it was the persistent cough, or that absolute traitor FRIDAY. The least she could do was lie for him when Mr. Stark asked her what his temperature was. 103 was not that bad, in his professional opinion.

HELLO (said very normally and not in an insane way)

I tried so hard on cairo day 2023 but unfortunately I did not succeed in my conquest to finish it all. I'll give you a snippet of what I started to write for the few chapters I did do!

Prompt 1: Bloody Hands in a Sink

The water turned off, but she continued to scrub, her hands turning red as she removed layer after layer of skin. Gentle hands met hers, and as she looked up, she let the unshed tears from her eyes begin to fall. 

“I know it feels like it, but you can’t wash it off, Riles. I need you to trust me on that.” Mac said, bringing her hands in front of them, holding them gently as he looked into her tearing eyes. “I know it hurts.” 

Prompt 2: Hidden Injury

“That sucked.” She said, rubbing at her eyes, eventually looking up and over at Mac, brows furrowing in a scarily familiar fashion to how Jack’s did moments ago. “Hey, you okay, Mac? You look a little pale.” 

“Thanks, Riley, I’m white, in case you hadn’t noticed.” 

A warm wrist found its way to his forehead and he swatted at it, and after a few moments, the heat was released, Jack squinting at him suspiciously. 

“You are a little warm there, brother. You wanna sit on the ground in case something happens?”

Prompt 3: Respiratory Distress

Mac had a complicated relationship with oxygen. Having been deprived of it all too often, he’d gotten used to the feeling that came with breathing in something he shouldn’t be. A job hazard, he supposed, but it didn’t change the fact that losing oxygen wasn’t a fun experience. Even less so when it’s not an outside factor influencing the lack of breath, but his own brain.

I am trying so so hard to get some prompts done this year 😭 Day one and two are done, but day two kind of turned into a bit of a crackfic- oops. Here are two lines from two of the fics :D

Rolling waves of consciousness turned over within Mac’s mind, wrestling with the thick layer of visionless fog that had formed a barrier between unconscious bliss and lucidity for a turn at the forefront of his stream of thought. (from as you stand and drown, a hurt/comfort macgyver fic :D)

It was a conversation that Riza suggested he’d had with Fullmetal ages ago. (from Ignition, more h/c but fullmetal alchemist!)

Steeling herself to knock, Klara raised her fist towards Liam’s door, taking a deep breath before allowing her knuckles to make contact with the steel.  (a VALORANT fic where killjoy asks brim to help her tie a tie!)

It wasn’t an uncommon occurrence to see a certain black-red snake curled up somewhere within Mr. Fell’s bookshop. (from Rumor Mill, a good omens fic where crowley takes his snake form)

Jack rarely let this side of him be seen by the people he loved. ( from even when im hard to love, a character study on Jack's darker side from macgyver)

Peeling his eyes open at a snail’s- pace, Ed blinked a few times in rapid succession in order to give himself enough time to adjust to the onset of a warm- albeit overwhelmingly bright- glow emanating from beside him. (from my little dove, a fullmetal alchemist sickfic)

Mac blinked slowly, willing himself to slip back into consciousness. He felt like he’d been asleep, but he didn't remember going to bed, nor did he remember going home. (so old help but its from a macgyver sickfic :D)

Devotion was a strong way to describe anything. (a character study on Lan Fan, from fullmetal alchemist for the FMA secret santa event!)

Crowley wasn’t particularly well-versed in matters of love. (another good omens fic, but a WIP i'm hoping to finish soon!)

Shaking hands reached towards the phone sitting on the bedside table, fingers barely brushing against the shattered screen when they stopped abruptly, hanging in midair, waiting for the brain to continue whatever mission it had sent them on. (an unfinished and lowkey abandoned macgyver WIP)

can you believe that we have fanfiction. that we have websites dedicated to fanfiction. that there is a place that you can go and read tens, hundreds, thousands and thousands of pieces of writing that strangers have made. people who are not "writers". people who come home at the end of the day and have feelings and say, i am going to put that into words. i am going to share those words. short, long, sweet, sad, horny, funny, wonderful words. we are all just human and we all love to make and remake and share that with others. can you believe that.

I've been watching your back for years, for years tangled with some real badasses that were trying to kill you. But this guy is…is different. He's really good. Beyond badass.

I’d like to direct you to the last episode of brotherhood.

Here, he is pretty much telling Hohenheim to screw off after suggesting Edward use his life to bring Alphonse back. 

He’s crying, the only time he calls Hohenheim “father” is in a sentence calling him a lousy one. 

Edward is crying and upset and then he looks over…

With tears in his eyes…. who is he looking at?

He’s looking at a certain Colonel and Lieutenant.

AND REMEMBERS THEIR WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

and that helps him calm down so that he can think.

And we all know the conclusion.

BUT I’M JUST SAYING. HE LOOKS TO ROY AND RIZA AFTER DISMISSING HIS BIOLOGICAL FATHER.
