Top three marvel movieeeeeess

I have no idea why I’m making this, I generally prefer to stick to Nintendo related things, but I suppose I am. Keep in mind this all my opinion, I am not trying to enforce my opinion on any of you.

-Doctor Strange-

You’ll probably notice two underlying similarities to these movies that make me love them so much: Lore and Subversion of expectations.

You can see the first element as Strange studies the Dark Dimension and learns in Kamar-Taj, and I especially love the quick reference to the Living Tribunal. I screamed a little on my rewatch when I saw that.

The second element is with Strange himself, and I think there’s two parts of this movie that exemplify what I mean here. The first is when he seeks progressively more expensive and experimental treatments for his hands, and one quote from him I just absolutely love here.

Christine, the obvious love interest for Strange, says that there are things in life he can enjoy besides his work and reputation, and Strange, at one of his lowest moments in the film, says “Like what, like you?!”

The delivery from Cumberbatch here is withering, and as an Aroace person, you already know I loved the subversion of the whole “My life is crumbling around me but I can be happy as long as I have you, generic love interest!” I cannot talk up this scene enough.

Then of course, there’s the final fight, Doctor Strange vs Dormammu.

I think most of us went into this fight expecting a brutal beat down from Dormammu followed by some clever trick from Strange, but that is not what we got at all. Doctor Strange 1 completely subverts this, and if I think most of us will agree that it was the best scene in the entire movie, and it can be summed up in one line:

“Dormammu, I’ve come to bargain.”

Strange sets up a time loop, dying endlessly so that the rest of the world can live. Dormammu is infuriated with this situation, but I feel he snapped when Strange called him his prisoner. Dormammu absolutely broke at the frustration of the situation, and finally agreed to bargain, and I see a similarity between these two that I think Strange recognised when he said that. I also believe this may be compounded by the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch plays both characters.

Lastly, I have to at least brush over the scene of the Ancient One’s final moments, talking to strange and watching the snow fall. She’s pretty much content with her death here, but she turns her attention away from the snow for a few moments and urges Strange to absorb the fact that “It’s not about you.” If it weren’t for this scene, I doubt Strange would have bargained with Dormammu. The Ancient One is just so cool to me…

…I have been talking about one movie for way too long, and I still have things I could say about it, but I will cut this post off here. If anyone happened to enjoy me ranting about a Marvel movie, then I will continue this ranking with my #2 and #1 picks.

Until my next post, stay happy, healthy, and safe, everyone! Goodbye!
