Hey, so I live on unceded Chinook land. The Chinook never formally gave up the land around the mouth of the Columbia or Willapa Bay. They began getting hit hard by European diseases in the late 1700s, before Lewis and Clark ever arrived, and eventually the survivors of those communities in what is now south Pacific County headed further north up Willapa Bay to relatives up there.
When European settlers showed up in larger numbers in the mid-1800s, they assumed the land wasn't being used, so they took over pretty much everything; you still have descendants of some of these settlers who have large parcels of land here, to say nothing of all the timber interests in the area that control thousands more acres throughout the Willapa Hills.
The Chinook Indian Nation received federal recognition in 2001, but it was rescinded a year and a half later due to complaints from the Quinault Indian Nation. Since then, the Chinook have been unable to access much-needed resources from the U.S. government such as health care, housing and utilities. Federally recognized tribes receive these benefits and more, and many also have reservations; it is absolutely not an ideal situation nor is it anywhere near making up for the violent removal of indigenous people from their ancestral lands. But even these resources would have helped the Chinook a great deal over the past two decades, to include during the COVID pandemic.
The above petition is to urge the state of Washington to turn the old Naselle Youth Camp over to the Chinook Indian Nation. It would be a much larger and more stable headquarters, particularly as their current one is at risk from sea level rise and a potential earthquake and tsunami in the Cascadia Subduction Zone (which is a when situation, not an if.) Again, the NYC wouldn't undo all of the injustices over the past couple centuries and more, but it would be a step in the right direction on the part of Washington's government.
Even if you are not a resident of Washington, please show your support by signing this petition. U.S. folks can also contact their elected officials asking them to support the recognition of the Chinook Indian Nation.

indigenous peoples' day: don't just acknowledge land
it's indigenous peoples' day in many places around the united states, including my hometown of seattle! if you live in the u.s., please make this a day where you don't just symbolically acknowledge indigenous people, but support them materially with reparations and other forms of concrete support.
for seattleites and or others nearby who live on the lands of the duwamish tribe, past and present (or anyone else who wants to support the duwamish):
PAY RENT (aka reparations) to the duwamish tribe
SIGN THE PETITION for federal recognition of the tribe and call on your elected officials to support
ENDORSE the petition for federal recognition if you can speak on behalf of an organization, allied tribe, or elected official
VISIT the duwamish longhouse and cultural center in person if you are local (they have events as well)
SHOP at the longhouse or their online store
ACKNOWLEDGE THE LAND but make sure to include links to the real rent website and/or actions people can take so that your land acknowledgment isn't empty
EDUCATE YOURSELF about the tribe's past and present, their fight for federal recognition and lawsuit, their environmental justice work, and more
SPREAD THE WORD - you can use artwork and flyers they've developed for advocacy purposes
if you live somewhere else, find out whose land you live on, and then look into how you can take similar actions to support indigenous people and tribes in your area.
don't let you acknowledgment of indigenous peoples' day be passive. do what you can to uplift the self-determination of indigenous peoples like the duwamish tribe!

Rather, those statistics are about noncitizens who entered the country under any administration, including Trump’s; were convicted of a crime at some point, usually in the US after their arrival; and are now living in the US while being listed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s “non-detained docket” — where some have been listed for years, including while Trump was president, because their country of citizenship won’t let the US deport them back there. Second, that ICE “non-detained” list includes people who are still serving jail and prison sentences for their crimes; they are on the list because they are not being held in immigration detention in particular.

Ahmed is 29 years old from Northern Gaza. He is currently living in Belgium, where he travelled to pursue higher education. His family of 12 people - 6 adults and 6 children under 16 - are trapped in Gaza, surviving the most unbearable conditions. This includes but is not limited to constant displacement, bombings, starvation and disease.
Among these family members is Ahmed's little brother Abdullah (Aboodi, for short) who is only four years old. At such a young age he helps his family gather scrap wood for fire, when he should be having a safe and carefree childhood.
Ahmed has shared with me that his family is currently at the Al-Maghazi camp, which is an area along the border and extremely dangerous. His family can hear the movement of tanks from inside their tents, especially at night.
Ahmed has recently lost his cousin Ahmed who was targeted by a plane missile while fetching water for his family. Ahmed was only 31 years old and married with three children, and had just welcomed a baby girl to the world only two months ago. Please take the time to read about who Ahmed was, and the life he had before this genocide.
To evacuate Gaza, they need to raise €45,000.
For essential expenses like transportation and shelter, they need an additional €10,000.
Therefore, they need a total of €55,000.

Each year the tuition fees add up to $6,000, which is a heavy financial burden not only for someone so young but also living under the horrific conditions of a genocide. The Almoghrabi family
This family consists of Amjad ( @amjad20011 ), his wife Rasmia and their son Ahmed who was only two and a half years old at the start of the genocide. Their campaign has slowed down CONSIDERABLY - as of queueing this post, the second to last donation was 2 DAYS AGO. They urgently need to raise €25,000 for their evacuation from Gaza.
Amjad says they have been displaced 4 times as of this post, and he himself has lived through 4 different wars. It is painful to imagine his son suffering the same experience, and he desperately doesn't want that to happen. Here is another post showing the life little Ahmed had before the genocide - look at how happy and normal his life was. This is how his life should be.
Their family, like everyone in Gaza, experiences a lack of food, water, medicine, and the constant fear of losing their loved ones or their own lives. In their GFM it explains their experience of living cramped in a tent with their cousins, 10 people in a single room. It is deeply concerning how much their donations have slowed down, so let's give their fundraiser a boost and get it circulating again!!!

In this difficult time. The past 11 months of displacement and famine have exacerbated our suffering and unbelievable difficulties. We have used all the sad words to describe the situation we have reached, but these words were not enough. My family lost their home and I also lost my home which I had prepared to get married and settle down in with my life partner.
