It could also be that the theatrical poster is trying to be intriguing without giving much away, to have an air of mystery/excitement that would make someone interested. In contrast, a dvd might be sold to people who've already seen the movie and would be inclined to buy a movie they liked when they're reminded of the fun characters and things that happened. I think there's also a longer tradition of artistry in movie posters and someone would see them in a different context than a dvd case. It's interesting to think about. I'd never really looked at the difference.
