Figured I'd share my Nell x Sofia AU here cause I'm absolutely obsessed with Renegade Nell and these two. I definitely plan on writing more for this ship soon!
Little one shot exploring the idea of pre-canon Nellfia
Just a little gif set to go with my most recent Nellfia fic:
I really like piecing together scenes from canon that look like they could belong together, even though they don't. So this was kind of the scene I imagined when writing my most recent fic (although being set in pre-canon they'd of course be a little younger) but it was still fun to have a bit of a visual. If you want, you can read it here, but this is a bit from the beginning —
There’s a part of Nell that almost can’t bring herself to keep walking forward.
Cobblestone fades to dirt beneath the soles of her boots, the town’s modest buildings are replaced by the trees and thick foliage off the beaten path, and when she nears the same clearing she’s stood in hundreds of times before, she has half a mind to turn right around.
It would be so simple to do.
She could head in the same direction she’d come from, like she’d never even shown up at all. She could pretend that letting go for the last time should be easier than this, except—
“Nell.”
That’s when she sees a familiar flash of brunette hair that she’s secretly both hoped for and dreaded, followed by gentle blue eyes that quickly find her own from beneath one of Broadwater Hall’s large perimeter stone archways.
No going back now.
Nell slows her pace as Sofia draws closer, watching as the hem of her long skirt drifts out and around her before ultimately lurching to a halt when she stops just short of where Nell has. Her expression is filled with a relief that Nell now feels guilty having almost denied her of, and her words are tinged with a hint of grateful astonishment.
“You came.”
“I wasn’t so sure I would,” Nell admits. “Almost changed my mind ’bout five times.”
Sofia nods slowly, and offers Nell the slightest shadow of a smile. “I know.”
I really relate to the way we only see Nell wearing typically feminine attire as a disguise but the rest of the time when she's herself she's in men's clothing. I too am only arsed to wear a dress when I have to go out among society in the guise of a proper lady
Thinking about Nell meeting a literal fairy that gives her magic powers and tells her he's noncorporeal and can't be hurt and that he knows her gun's not loaded and her first question is
what do you mean you're on my side

Renegade Nell (Ep.2)
i'm losing my mind over the parallels between the trotters and the blanchfords (+amadin). all three children growing up together in the same place, with a father but without a mother. they all viciously care about one another (see nell with george when she's shot, sofia with her brother, amadin with sofia). but at the same time they are wildly different people. actually, the entire season can be read as a juxtaposition of the trotters and the blanchefords.
whereas nell voluntarily leaves her family in her late teens, amadin joins the family against his will as a child. the love-hate sofia feels for thomas is shown by her disapproval of his general behaviour (even disgust at times), but the fact that she later saves his life proves her love. nell loves george from the beginning on, despite not even knowing her. and while nell acquires power by chance without asking for it, sofia craves power at any cost and goes against her own morals to come by it.
the family dynamics of the blanchefords are characterised by power imbalances: amadin being a servant to his "siblings"/the people he grew up with. thomas being a bully to everyone in his life. the misogyny that sofia experiences. a cold, distant father with high (and specific) expectations of his children.
the trotters are shown as a warm family with loving dynamics. nell is not ostracised for wearing male clothing, and when she returns home her father almost immediately accepts her back. george is shown to be able to move around freely and play what she likes. both sam and roxy have to work hard, but that almost puts them in equal positions? neither of them own the tavern, it belongs to the blanchfords. and roxy being harassed by thomas is a different kind of misogyny than what sofia experiences.
and what is the underlying reason for their differences? what is established right on with the blanchfords living in a manor and the trotters running a tavern?
class.
the reason lord blancheford assures a strict upbringing of his children is because his son has to one day continue the legacy. there is a lot at stake because the family already has a lot of socioeconomic power. thomas is the way he is because he is an extremely privileged boy, who was taught (directly or indirectly) that his life is worth more than others. and the reason why sofia has this thirst for power is not just because she is a woman living under patriarchy but also because she is a rich woman, which makes land ownership something that is in reach but kept from her solely because she is a woman. and amadin is literally bought into the family (there's another aspect there concerning colonialism, but i'm not the right person to dissect that).
the two families are like two sides of the same coin. in contrast to the trotters, the blancheford family is extremely privileged but ultimately cold and twisted in their dynamics. and it all comes down to class difference.

Hey. Hey look at me. Yeah you.
You should watch Renegade Nell. Cuz it's awesome. And super different and original. And fun. And a girl gets to beat a lot of ass. And it's like a cowboy story set in 1700s England. And also there's magic. And it's really emotional. And you get to absolutely fall in love with Nell and her sisters Roxy and George. And it uses its historical fiction setting to make statements about class and privilege and prisons and other stuff that feels both in line with the era the story takes place in and can be applied to the modern world, but it never feels like it's shouting at you about its message. And it's an original story that isn't based on anything, isn't a reboot of anything, and we've been starving for stuff like that (especially from Disney).
And uhhh. I think you'd like it. Ok bye.
Renegade Nell is such a tumblrcoded show pls go watch it
