He absolutely wants to do duets with you, and he would like you to sing the music he wrote for you (yes, he wrote you about ten songs, but he's ashamed to give them to you)

However, he feels really sad when he sees the connection you've with your partner, but not because of you: he's sad because he feels like you two are missing that special connection

Because this reason he decides to talk to you about it ("(Y/N), are you happy with me? Do you feel as connected to me as you do to him?")

Eventually, after you console him, you two will do a duet together and your audience will go totally crazy; all his doubts will be dispelled

O. Shin'ichi (Shin)

He's still a kid: he's still very possessive and he gets jealous easily

Naturally, he's very proud of you, but he gets really jealous seeing your connection with your partner

In fact, at the end of your concert, he'll run into your dressing room ignoring your bodyguards, who'll be trying to stop him from invading your privacy by entering that, and kiss you passionately in front of your partner

"What are you doing, Shin?" "She's mine!"

In the end, he's just so insecure, and he wants your reassurance ("You love me too, don't you? We have that connection too, don't we?")

T. Yasushi (Yasu)

He's the calmest of the band when a situation like this arises

Although he feels a jealous (he really wants to run to the stage where you're performing with your partner and to push you away from him), he quickly puts aside his thoughts about that and, after you finish your performance, he'll compliment you

However, he'll attempt to establish an even deeper connection than you two already have

He isn't a guy who gets jealous easily: he trusts you blindly

However, he still feels very insecure and, when he sees the interactions you've with another guy, he starts asking a series of discouraging questions in his head ('Would (Y/N) be better off with him? Is she happy with me?')

While you're talking to a boy, he tries to stay close to you and to butt in on your conversations and, when you two are alone, he asks you if you're happy with him

After you answer him, he tends to get a little clingy and hugs you tightly for a few minutes

"Were you jealous?" "Yes..."

O. Shin'ichi (Shin)

He quickly becomes very jealous: he's never had anyone to take care of him, so he tends to become very attached to those he cares about

As soon as he sees a boy approaching you, he immediately stands next to you and puts his arm around your waist

If he notices a guy starting to flirt with you, he approaches you two and kiss you passionately

"What's wrong with you, Shin?" "He was too close to you!"

In the end, he's just scared of losing you, so he tries to act on his fear by staying close to you and not letting anyone make you uncomfortable with their attentions

T. Yasushi (Yasu)

I think he's the calmest of all the characters: he trusts you and knows you would never betray him

However, he still feels a little annoyed when he sees you chatting happily with a boy, so he always goes near you

The days after he feels that mild jealousy, he tries to stay closer to you, working from home and sleeping all night with you (yes, I think he works partly at nights because of the band), and he confesses to you many times his love for you and how much he cares for you

"I love you so much, you know that?" "Yes, you told me that about ten times today."

Nevertheless, he never tries to distance you from guys, because he thinks it isn't right towards you: he thinks, just as you don't stop him from talking to women, he shouldn't do that either

H. Ren

Like Nobu, he also rarely gets jealous, but he feels very insecure when he sees you with another guy

However, unlike him, he puts aside his insecurity and, acting tough, he approaches you and hugs you from behind, glaring at the boy you were chatting with

"What are you talking about, darling?"

As soon as you two are alone, though, he starts holding you tighter, but without hurting you, and allows his insecurities to return: "(Y/N), you're happy with me, right?"

He needs a good dose of reassurance from you to make all his insecurities stop

I. Takumi

He's certainly the most jealous and possessive of all the characters: in fact, it's very likely you two often argue due to his excessive jealousy and possessiveness

When he notices you're with a boy, he immediately runs goes to you and hugs you tightly to make him go away

If the guy doesn't get the hint, he kisses you very passionately

"What did you do, Takumi?!" "You're mine, and that was too close to you!"

He remains angry for days after becoming jealous and, out of spite, he may even date other women, just to "return the favor"

T. Nobuo (Nobu)

Nobu is a hopeless romantic. He's dedicated many songs to you, and he's done, is doing and will do everything to make you happy and to protect you: for example, one day he wanted to spend his entire salary to buy you a jewel you had been eyeing for a few minutes (in the end, you managed to dissuade him from doing so)

Your typical appointments are of two types: the first is at your home, the second at the park. When you two are at home, your date consists of either cooking lunch or dinner and watching a movie together, or Nobu teaching you to play the guitar (it's the activity he likes to do most with you). Instead, when you go out together, you two always take a walk from your house to the park, and then you sit on your usual bench under a cherry tree and chat (usually about his band since he always wants to tell you about it)

The activities you two do most together, as I've already written, are cooking, watching films, playing music and going for walks. However, Nobu loves, loves when you come into the rehearsal room to listen to BLAST play. Every time you come there, he always works twice as hard for you, even if he has to endure teasing from Nana the other band members when you congratulate him and he blushes violently

I think Nobu's first love language is physical touch: he loves being close to you, hugging you and holding you close to him, holding your hand when you go out together, kissing you... He wants to make you feel loved and appreciated with his affection, and he would be delighted if you reciprocated it. However, if you were very shy or had traumas which prevent you from showing or receiving affection freely, he would try to reduce it and to not make you feel uncomfortable

Nobu uses a lot of cute nicknames based on different situations: are you in public? "(Y/N)-chan", "darling" and "dear" are how he calls you. Are you two alone? He indulges himself with every nickname he can think of: "sunflower", "flower", "princess", "cherry"... Are you sad and do you need to be consoled? He uses the sweetest nicknames he can think of, like "my love" or "sweetheart"

SPOILER WARNING!! This post contains a whole lot of Nana manga spoilers, so if you are not up to date with the manga, I suggest you get up to date before you continue reading.

I also want to make it clear that I may not associate the whole song with the character I assign it to. For some of these, I only associate them with specific lines from that song.

Nobody - Reira Serizawa

My God, I'm so lonely

I think this is the most straight-forward comparison in the post, and it's one I've seen many times before. At it's core, 'Nobody' is a song about loneliness and alienation, both things that Reira struggles with throughout the series. Her wanting to sleep with Takumi and Shin comes from a place of loneliness, which I think is pretty similar to the line 'I'm just asking for a kiss, give me one good honest kiss and I'll be alright'

Fireworks - Hachiko/Nana Komatsu & Nana Osaki

To be completely honest, I associate this song with the entire Fireworks arc of Nana, and all of the future scenes we see.

And then, one warm summer night

I'll hear fireworks outside

And I'll listen to the memories as they cry, cry, cry

My interpretation of this song is that it is about living life and moving on despite the pain you've dealt with. Living with trauma, and not letting it hold you back. I believe the 'summer night' refers to a time where the memories of your struggle might come flooding back, and you have to face them.

I associate this song with the older and wiser Hachiko we see in the future sequences in Nana. While we see that she has grown and changed, become stronger because of her struggles, we know that she still carries them with her. I think this is most evident in the scene in the last episode, in which Nobuo grabs her hand, and in the scene where Hachiko and Shin see the photos of Nana singing.

You are a liar if you say that this song does not remind you of Nana in any way.

Washing Machine Heart - Shin & Hachiko

I want to make it VERY clear that I do not associate the entire song with Hachi and Shin. Not at all. Just these particular lyrics:

Baby, though I've closed my eyes

I know who you pretend I am

I know who you pretend I am

These lines, in my head, are from Hachiko to Shin. She knows that he sees her as a mother figure.

Should've been me - Hachiko & Nobu

I've seen a lot of people on TikTok make edits of this song with Sachiko, Shoji, and Hachi. And initially, I thought it was a pretty valid comparison.

My reasoning being: Sachiko shares a bit of a resemblance to Hachi when she first met Shoji. Not only that, Hachi hadn't been giving Shoji what he wanted in their relationship, so he turned to Sachiko. At first glance, this may seem like one of the most obvious comparisons on this list.

However, after a quick look on genius.com, and a look into other people's views on the song, my interpretation on this song completely changed.

In the song, Mitski sings about how her partner is in love with somebody else, somebody who looks like her, and is saddened by this fact. In my opinion, this person that her partner is in love with is not a different person, but an idealized version of Mitski herself. A version that her partner has projected onto her. They are in love with this version that lives in their mind, not Mitski herself.

I think it's pretty easy to see how my mind immediately went to Nobuo and Hachi after I realized this. Nobuo has the habit of idealizing those around him. He does this to Nana, Ren, and most notibly, Hachiko. I am by no means trying to say that Nobu did not love Hachiko, but it's pretty evident that he did idealize lot of things about her, especially when he first started liking her.

Jobless Monday- Hachiko/Nana Komatsu

Jobless Monday is about the feeling of being in a dead end relationship. A relationship that is nearing it's inevitable end. A relationship in which you are not important to the other person.

I think it's easy to see how I associate this song with Hachiko, as she is no stranger to this feeling.

This line in particular struck me:

He only loves me when

Theres a means he means to end

I think this perfectly encapsulates how Hachiko is not prioritized in any of her relationships(aside from her and Nobuo's). She's seen as unimportant. We see this Shoji, Asano, and Takumi.

I also think this song applies to the early days of her relationship with Takumi. She knew he didn't exactly see her as somebody worth respecting, and she knew that he probably wasn't planning on pursuing an actual relationship with her. She knows not to believe Takumi when he promises to see her as soon as the tour concludes. And even when she marries him, she knows she will always be second to trapnest.

Francis Forever - Nana Osaki

I don't know what to do without you

I've been trying to lay my head down

I don't need the world to see

I end up on a tree-lined street

Francis Forever is a song about inadequacy, and coming to terms with the end of a relationship. I associate this song with Nana O, after her breakup with Ren. One of the central themes of the song is the narrorator being torn between not caring about other's opinions of her, and wanting to know her former lover's perception of her. She can't stand to be without this person(her former lover), nor can she stand not knowing where she stands with them.

I think this pretty accurately encapsulates Nana's feelings towards Ren when they first split. It also perfectly encapsulates Nana's feelings to those around her-- she really doesn't care about their perception, good or bad. I think the fact that she didn't bother to defend herself when accused of prostitution in highschool and ended up expelled because of it really proves this.

In my opinion, Blast, Ren, and Hachiko are the only exceptions to this rule.

Without you, I don't yet know quite how to live

I guess is a song about the unexpected ending of a relationship, and preparing to move on. These lines in particular reminded me of Nana O after Ren's death. Being emotionally unequiped to part with a relationship, and lacking the closure to say that it is definitively over, describes Nana O's reaction to Ren's death pretty well. She felt as if he was part of her, a part she couldn't live without.

With him gone, she'll have to learn how to live knowing that it's definitively over, unlike their first breakup.

This song is all about a toxic, but addictive relationship. The singer is well-aware that this person is bad for them, and yet they still stay with them, whether it's out of love or dependency.

I've seen people associate this song with Yasu before, and I absolutely don't agree with that. The very moment I read through the lyrics of this song I immidietly thought of Takumi and Hachiko.

From the very beginning of their relationship, Hachiko knows that Takumi probably doesn't have any intentions of pursuing a serious relationship with her. She knows that their relationship isn't a loving one, and yet she still sleeps with him, and lets the people around her believe that she is in love with him.

Even after she marries him, she knows that their relationship is not healthy, and yet she stays. For her children, and because she depends on Takumi.

'Why didn't you stop me?' is a song that deals with themes of unhealthy idealization and dependency. Sound familiar?

The second verse in particular reminds me of Nobuo. In it, Mitski realizes the difference between the memories she has of her past lover, and the reality of them. She projects a perfect image onto her partner, seeing what she wants to see rather than what was actually there. Which is exactly what Nobuo does to many people around him, namely Hachiko, Ren, and even Nana O.

I believe this verse really encapsulates what I think Nobuo would've felt when reflecting on his relationships years after the events of the main story.

I think the chorus can sort of be associated with Nobuo's feelings towards Hachiko after they initially split. He's confused, left wondering just why Hachiko chose Takumi, and what happened leading up to it. He texts her, wondering why she isn't fighting to stay with him. Why hasn't she chased after him?

Outro

Did I make it obvious that Hachiko is the character I relate to the most? And that Yasu and Ren are the characters I struggle to understand the most? I really struggled to find songs that made sense for the male characters in the show. It's partly because they're some of the ones I undestand the least, and some of Mitski's songs deal with themes linked to being a woman.

Actually joining the band wasn’t hard especially because when you met Nana there was no band💀

You already lived in Tokyo and were just returning from a trip when you saw her

“Hey, do you happen to sing by any chance?”

“Who are you?”

“Don’t worry about that just know I can play guitar pretty damn good if I do say so myself!”

She was tired from the long ass ride and didn’t know anyone in Tokyo aside from Ren

Went back to your place and played for her

Nana isn’t a very emotional or open person so she tends to keep secrets but over time if you guys get that close she’ll vent to you

After the whole Nobu moving to Tokyo fiasco all you guys need is a bassist and drummer

For such a young kid he was pretty good player (granted your only like 6-7 years older)

Hachi and Nobu: I still believe

This is my headcanon of how the present time fireworks day from manga chapter 42 and anime episode 47 could have ended after they held hands in the bathroom. I started reading Nana when I was 16 in 2002 and I still hope for a continuation of this once in a lifetime masterpiece, for an answer to the many questions 🙏🏻
