for some backstory, and why this scene hurts ME :
out of all of his wives, rossi clearly loved carolynn the most. we don't even get an estimate as to how long their marriage lasted, but ?? compared to one summer with hayden in paris and ONE NIGHT with krystall in vegas? it had to have lasted years. even after rossi and carolynn tried to have a son, even after that son died the same day he was born, they still stayed together for nearly four and a half years. "epilogue" is enough to prove that if rossi had been given the chance, he likely would've jumped into carolynn's arms again and never left.
i'm not saying there wasn't any love in his marriage with hayden, though! sure, it was a fling more than anything else, but he saw something in her. the only reason they divorced was because he was too young and jealous and trying to catch up to where she was, as a diplomat, while he was still a fledgeling fbi agent in the bsu.
all of this silly wife exposition just to say ...
could you imagine having a child and not knowing they exist? for THIRTY YEARS?
it's obviously an upsetting thing!! but imagine trying for a child, losing that child, burying yourself in work and moving up and never stopping for anything, not even *family-*
and that coping mechanism is exactly why hayden didn't want to tell him.
