It’s A Deal! WGA & AMPTP Reach Tentative Agreement To End Writers Strike

"The Writers Guild has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end its strike after nearly five months. The parties finalized the framework of the deal Sunday when they were able to untangle their stalemate over AI and writing room staffing levels.

“We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language,” the guild told members this evening in a release, which came just after sunset and the start of the Yom Kippur holiday that many had seen deadline to wrap up deal after five days of long negotiations...

Despite today’s welcome news, it still will take a few days for the strike to be officially over as the WGA West and WGA East proceed with their ratification process. During the WGA’s last strike in 2007-08, a tentative agreement was reached on the 96th day and it wasn’t over until the 100th...

All attention will now turn to ratifying the WGA deal and getting SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP back to the bargaining table to work out a deal to end the actors’ strike, which has now been going on for 70 days.

Details of the WGA’s tentative agreement haven’t been released yet but will be revealed by the guild in advance of the membership ratification votes. Pay raises and streaming residuals have been key issues for the guild, along with AI and writers room staffing levels."

With the WGA announcement of the possible end to the strike, I do want people to remember that the union's general membership still has to vote for the deal. The workers still have to agree to it.

This isn't the moment to stop paying attention, especially while SAG-AFTRA is still on strike, and let's not forget that The Animation Guild's contract negotiation is right around the corner.

Don't get complacent now.

Hi Mr. Gaiman, I've seen a few tweets and posts about not crossing the picket line for the WGA strike but nothing actually explaining what that entails for this strike? Is it not watching streaming services since that's one of the main issues? All tv? TV and movies? only new stuff or reruns too?

No, it's to not cross the picket lines literally. If there's a writers guild picket in place, you don't cross it. (But you can always join it -- especially if you are in LA or NYC.)

The WGA hasn't called for a boycott of streaming services or TV or anything like that, and until and unless they do I wouldn't push for that.

What the WGA would like is for people to make their support for the writers clear and loud -- write to the networks you watch on and tell them to treat their writers fairly, post your support on every social media outlet you can. Let the producers know that public opinion is against them.

Fair treatment is not an inconvenience. The 1% is.

a fabulous affirmation by @ceo-of-sloppy-men !!!

I’ve said it before I’ll say it again: I am pro union. Pro strike. Pro eat the rich. Do not let mega corporations convince you that unionized labour is too extreme, and complain about strikes - but not that the workers are an inconvenience, complain that the corporation’s inability to meet demands is an inconvenience. The unions are not the problem. It is the 1% who refuse to give up a sliver of their silver platter that is the problem.

I will gladly wait for any postal strike to be over if it means workers get fairer treatment (both benefits and pay, not one or the other). I will gladly wait for new shows if it means actors and writers do not need to live in fear of AI or being unable to pay their bills. I will gladly wait for everyone to be treated fairly and equitably.

And if you don’t like it, get off my lawn and go learn why you should. We all deserve to be treated like people. Not disposable toothbrushes.

Fair treatment is not an inconvenience. The 1% is.
