Everybody wants to be a pro (hero)

Quirkism in chapter 1

On the very first page we learn that how you are born can give you an advantage in life. And Bakugos role in the first chapter is to solidify that standpoint of some people are better than others because of that.

This comes into play over and over again. Deku is perceived as a lesser being because he is quirkless, people get discriminated based on “weak” mutation quirks like Spinner, whereas “strong” mutation quirks like Gang Orca are praised. Flashier quirks like explosion are more impressive and wanted, unlike extremely strong but less flashy quirks like erase or mind control, even giving the students disadvantages in the entrance exam.

Quirkless people are pitied by others like Inko trying to console Deku by saying she is sorry that his goal of becoming a hero isn’t possible, because the idea of a hero is so warped around having a quirk, while Deku only wanted to hear that you can be a hero regardless, which he later shows, he is.

On the other hand Bakugo got at 14 an internship offer after being nearly killed by a villain. Because of his flashy, strong quirk. An offer from a pro that did not help to safe him, while Deku gets scolded.

And quirks are a competition for money and fame, being a pro is about money and fame you want to gain. This is the foreshadowing of Endevour’s whole life. A man who unlike Bakugo did not grow out of his being on top is the most important thing in life phase. A man who made and abused his family for his own personal goals of being on top.

Thankfully Bakugo grew out of this behaviour.

What it takes to be a hero?

So what does it take to be a hero in the literal sense, in our world the criteria has changed from the ancient heroism of being strong and getting fame and fortune for it to being brave and going beyond everything others do in order to do good.

And bnha has this dynamic too. Being a pro hero means doing it for fame and fortune like the first term heroism was used for. But being a true hero requires something else which is why the society of bnha suffers from too many pros and not enough heroes.

Not only does being a pro hero have hurdles like good grades and entrance exams you can fail you also need to have “the body for it”, aka a strong quirk. You cannot be a hero if you aren’t born one.

Which is why someone without a quirk, or a weak quirk can’t possibly be a hero.

All Might even tells Deku if he wants to save people, aka what a true hero does he can do it by joining the police force or working in prisons, all jobs that are highly overlocked in bnha and apparently underpaid. These jobs are extremely important for a functioning system but those people aren’t considered heroes, even though they do all the work, past the initial flashy fighting of the pros. They are upholding the at this point still stable society but are looked down on.

So it is no wonder once the system collapses the cracks run so deep that no one trust the heroes anymore.  This ties in with part 3, heroes can’t be humans, they have to be above everything and can’t show flaws.

This is literally just me every single goshdamn day.

My absolute favorite types of fics to read are the ones where Izuku is a quirkless vigilante teamed up with Hatsume and/or Shinsō and they have a really nice platonic bond and they will both kill and die for each other.

Izuku manages to piss off every pro hero but they hit the protect button the second they find out he’s a kid. Except for Endeavor who he hates with a passion (the feeling is mutual). Todoroki knows Izuku for both his vigilante and civilian personas, cue his absurd theories. And mayhaps Tododeku.

Izuku goes to UA but nObody makes the connection until he pulls some heroic shit outta nowhere. Bakugo is less of a dick and more like a worried-for-his-long-lost-childhood-friend-but-still-an-asshole. For some reason Izuku has a lot of cats. Many meme references, Aizawa’s done with all of this shit, a dash of childhood trauma, and BAM

It may seem obscure, but I’ve read, like, over ten fics that for that exact description. If you have read/made something like that, PLEASE LET ME KNOW AND I WOULD READ THE HECK OUT OF IT AND SUPPORT YOU BECAUSE IT’S A STELLAR STORYLINE AND I WOULD READ IT A THOUSAND MORE TIMES

At this point I should probably just write one myself.

The concept for my next animatic : Detective Deku AU. Story: Izuku, an quirkless boy decide to become an detective. Working along side with professional detective Takahashi at first as an assistent. He's very good deciphering codes and with time develops addiction on caffeine.

Since the launch of the film In The Heights i've been obssesed with it. So inspired i decided to draw a latino Izuku Midoriya (puerto rican).
