Actually I think the main reason why realistically depicted degenerative memory issues aren't used more for drama in fiction is because target audiences simply could not handle it. Like killing characters for drama and shock value? Yeah, that's horrible but it's one blast and then a few chapters/episodes of the survivors coping with it. Dealing with a slow path to healing after a lifetime of trauma? That's something, almost therapeutic and soothing to watch.

But the slow, gradual decline of going from "oh yeah I forgot to do the thing, my memory is shot, sue me" to "oh lol what were we doing this for again? No seriously I forgot the point of this activity" to "I don't think I remember your name and I'm not sure how we met, but I know that I trust you"? And the constant threat of that one final thread being severed, of no longer recognising their friends nor remembering they are friends?

Yeah, there's no fix-it fic for that one.

It's Not 'Cute' When Dads Threaten My Son For Dating Their Daughter

While the role of overprotective father is not a new one, it is a tired concept that needs to just die, already. Aside from the assumption that my daughter (yes, I also have daughters) is incapable of good judgment and protecting herself and her standards, this ridiculous concept imagines my sons likewise incapable of the same good judgment and standards. [...] And rationalizing that young men have overwhelming urges that cloud their judgment and force them to make poor decisions regarding young women is nothing more than excusing bad behavior. [...] Above all, realize and come to terms with the fact that teenage sexuality is not a “boy thing.” Teenage sexuality is a teenage thing. Young men and young women alike are going to be curious, interested, and looking to learn more about sex.

This.* Is what I think every time I read the ‘overprotective dad with shotgun’ - or ‘overprotective friends threaten bodily harm if date hurts friend’s feelings’ - trope. Especially in fics in which the people dating are both adults and capable of consenting and of making honestly-intentioned mistakes! It’s not cute and loving; it’s violent and patronizing.

*(Minus the heteronormative focus of the article - but it’s apparently autobiographical, so.)

i feel like nobody ever talks about one of my favouriite shipping tropes, something i’ve decided to call “famous idol x normal person.” it can create so much cute fluff but also so much angst and i love that typa shit like that’s the good stuff right there

Not fake dating or fake married but a secret other thing: otp has been married for years but no one can find out because if HR hears about it….

My girlfriend doesn’t remember this but the way we started dating is quite literally an enamies to friend to lovers pipeline.

Said pipeline goes as follows

In 6th grade math class we had to do an assignment with a partner and my favorite person happened to be in that class so obviously I was gonna pair up with her, but she had decided to do it with somebody else instead. My autistic 11 year old self thought of this as a rejection and so I didn’t bother trying to find somebody else to partner up with.

Well doing the assignment myself wasn’t an option for some reason so the teacher tried to pair me up with the only other kid that didn’t have a partner. But because this person wasn’t me favorite person I couldn’t work with them. So I threw a fit and was sent to the little side room that the classroom had to fill out a “green sheet” (basically a behavior sheet).

So I did that and then sulked under the table because what else was I to do. About half way through the class the teacher being the kid in with the paper and leaves us to it. Despite how much I hated it I worked with my now mortal enemy (at least in my mind) to complete the paper. At the end of class we leave and go about our lives (and the teacher ripped up the green sheet so like what was even the point of having me do it wtf miss Gardner)

I ignore the kid in the halls because I am incapable of letting go of anything and for some reason I saw the fact that the teacher forced us to work together as their fault. Covid hits, school closes, Covid more or less ends, school reopens and the kid is in my choir class.

Time has passed so I’m more or less Indifferent to their existence in my space. My friends become friends with them tho so over the course of a month or so I become friends with them. Then in November my boyfriend at the time tells me that my now girlfriend has a crush on me. My bf was poly and so our relationship was kind of an open deal so after class I decided to ask the person about it.

WELL APPARENTLY WHILE I HAD MY HEADPHONES IN BEFORE TALKING TO THEM ABOUT IT THEY STRAIGHT CONFESSED TO ME AND I JUST DIDNT HEAR IT. SO HERE I AM LIKE AN ASSHOLE LIKE A MINUTE AFTERWARDS GOING “hey so, Kodi said you have a crush on me. Is that true?” AND THIS ABSOLUTE SAINT JUST GOES “yeah. I just told you that”

So anyways like the idiot who didn’t know I was aromantic yet I was at the time I asked them if they wanted to date. They say yes, we start dating, a year later she tells me she’s trans, nada bing bada boom I have a girlfriend with a gorgeous flower name (Dahlia), she has a fucking idiot as a partner and life’s all good.

Then I decided to tell my best friend (the favorite person from 6th grade the worked with somebody else forcing me to work with my now gf [thanks Janie couldn’t have done it without you]) about the whole story and this mf says “oh so like real life enemies to lovers. Your love story is a fanfic trope”.

And oh my god.

Honestly, Wayne trying to bring Steve into the family is my favorite thing in fanfics

things i see in steddie fics that i absolutely adore

1. tommy/other jocks having a crush on steve and being super protective as a result but steve thinks they’re just being good friends

2. eddie flirting shamelessly until steve starts flirting back and then he shuts down because steve is supposed to be straight

3. steve’s big empty house and his asshole parents

4. dustin and the rest of the party calling them mom and dad unironically

5. dustin being the favorite son

6. robin tearing out her hair trying to push them together

7. eddie walking into a pole when he sees steve in his scoops uniform

8. hopper/joyce immediately connecting the dots

9. “i like eddie, but he’s a guy” “okay, you can like boys and girls. it’s called being bisexual” *steve.exe shuts down*

10. wayne: did you ask him out yet? no?? fine. gimme five minutes to talk to him, i’ll have you two married by this afternoon

11. also wayne, rolling up his sleeves: time to bring this harrington boy into the family

12. argyle, high as a kite: you mean they’re not together?

13. vampire eddie trusting steve before anyone else

this may or may not be a hot take but i love modern au fanfics? like i thought this was a common thing that ppl liked them but all of a sudden ive seen a bunch of ppl hating on them and im very surprised

What, the Telepathic Hanky-Panky thing? One kinky dose of angelic grace for Dean and they're stuck in each other's heads? Side effect of Cas dragging him out of Hell by the heels of his soul?

Cas would cope with the trope, I'm sure - he's never fully got his head around human boundaries in the first place. I reckon Dean would go insane being completely known like that, though, even by someone he trusted/loved. There would be much angst amid the mind-blowing shared orgasms.

Do you know how shocked I was when I first found out Arranged Marriage is one of the most popular fanfic tropes??? Like you don't do that in the rest of the world???

Okay so my new favorite fanfiction thingy is:

Person A looking all scary and murderous and stuff but if you talk to them for more than a minute you'll realize they're like an overly energetic puppy

Person B looking all sweet and innocent but they're actually a vicious murder machine (bit like cats might I add)

Yesss, I fricken love fanfic tropes. One of the perks of being a Ko-fi subscriber of the podcast is getting to vote on and suggest content for eps. So a poll was set up in the Discord server and the group of us chose Sex Pollen/Curse and Fuck or Die! Two of my faves! Between us, we recommended Wincest, het, femmeslash, and multiples for Kasey and Sandra to check out.
