A kids movie should not make me upset enough at how it handled its climax/characters to the point where I made a rewrite, am writing a fan sequel, and have two more fan sequels in my head.

Y’all, just in case you don’t know them, shout out to silvery_soul on AO3. Like legit, the ruby gillman fan sequel they made, it is what inspired me to write a rewrite and a fansequel in the first place. I don’t know how to put it into words, but I have to give credit to them for being such a pillar in the ruby gillman fanfic community. Genuinely y’all, check out some of the works on AO3, there’s so many bangers in there, by many people who are just amazing. I can only dream to inspire people to create something for a fanbase. You just see these characters for a kids movie and maybe it’s not that deep but then you realize “hold on, nah, let’s do these characters justice, let’s create something that has HEART,” and that’s what I fucking love about this fanbase. You make such amazing stories with these characters, you make something you get so invested in, and yet at the end of the day it’s just words on a screen. Yet it’s so good, it’s so damn good, you just visualize it in your head and it’s so impacting. I can’t help but love it. Truly. So please, anyone who is in the fandom and is writing any fanfics, please post them to ao3. I want to see the fanbase in action, I want to see the fanbase continue to show dreamworks and universal that we care about this franchise. Doesn’t matter what it is, fanart, fanfics, etc. Let’s keep the train rolling, let’s let dreamworks know that this franchise has potential, potential to be among the greats. Let’s inspire some cinematic history.

So kung fu panda 4 just reached 400 million at the box office, and I’m gonna be honest, while I obviously want dreamworks to make money, I hope this doesn’t set a precedent. I know a lot of people love this movie, but it just feels hollow compared to the first three. The amount of things they could have done better is what pains me. They are really lucky this movie is funny (it’s nothing if not funny) and has the KFP name to ride on. Because I’m sorry to say, this felt ALMOST as bland as ruby gillman. Both suffer from writing that should have taken itself more seriously and flesh out the storyline in ways that would have benefitted. Both suffer from villains that feel like they SHOULD have compelling backstories and motivations but one falls flat because of a dumb plot twist and the other falls short because it’s like the barebones of a backstory and motivation (again, thank you Mike). Both try to be emotional at times, which I respect, but again, they could have went way further to get the heart strings tugging. My main point is, it doesn’t matter if half of the fanbase liked the movie, or even loved the movie, or if it made back a ton of money. This shouldn’t set a precedent for people making these movies deciding to not put in their all when it comes to making an interesting story that feels like it has heart put into it, only because it’s riding off the success of previous installments in the franchise. Here I was hoping dreamworks would make a ruby sequel that blows the first one out of the water, but if they’re not gonna give their all for Kung Fu Panda of all things, then how can I expect them to do better for a movie that only made 45 million. Hopefully I’m wrong. Hopefully the wild robot will show dreamworks “wow, people actually really love it when we put an emphasis on heartfelt emotional storytelling that doesn’t overly rely on comedy,” and maybe kfp5 will bring back the magic the first 3 had, and ruby gillman 2 will be known as the biggest comeback for an animated franchise.

Listen. I’m just saying, if dreamworks DOES make a ruby sequel that focuses on the mermaids and krakens making peace, and it turns out chelsea is just actually chelsea and she happens to have some biological family around... Willem Dafoe as her grandfather would be the best casting ever. Without a doubt. Do y’all see the vision?

And as for Toni Collette, Agatha Gillman, aka best mom in the seven seas, happy Mother’s Day! Hope she has a great day today, and a great day every day of every year!

Lackluster and lazy writing that holds itself back, has a really good basis for some cool lore that it doesn’t really utilize to the fullest, plot twist that rips away the agency of a character, decided to be bland, “safe” and cookie cutter instead of trying to tell a great message that could have landed if they just went through with it (the movie should have ended with ruby managing to get Chelsea to see vengeance will only hurt her even more, Chelsea processing her grief by letting ruby console her alongside her family, and grandmama realizing her error in her hate and bias and vowing to do right by Chelsea and the mermaids to start a more peaceful and mutually respectful era between their kinds).

Say something bad about this movie!

I wanted to get out a full chapter for my fan sequel by then but unfortunately I’ve been in a bit of a slump trying to finish it, but I might write a little something other that won’t be as long but will be a nice tidbit for the fandom, as well as maybe some fanart too.

Just a heads up before you read these, please read my rewrite and the first 4 chapters of my sequel fic for more context on the stories

Here is an Idea for a Counterpart of Ruby Gillman. Amethyst: Ruby's Counterpart from a universe where she was conceived from an affair between Agatha and a Leviathan. Lost in a thunderstorm and taken into an orphange, She was eventually taken in by Margot's Family and is torn apart of her heritage as she falls into the ocean years later.

Idk about the whole affair stuff, but that would be an interesting idea. I'd like to think of the possibility of grandmama having Agatha marry a leviathan as an arranged marriage and even having a kid, thus leading to the kingdom and giant Kraken race being even more powerful than ever, with ruby being a powerful Kraken/leviathan hybrid. Instead of merely being lost in a thunderstorm, id like to put in another character. A soothsayer who reveals ruby unfortunately would become a tyrant mad with power if she was to be raised by her people at the moment. So the soothsayer or maybe even Agatha herself raise ruby on land so she wouldn't be raised in those conditions.

You know I did some looking in my old notes and I thought of a scenario for a Ruby Gillman Fanfic. Its where Ruby sees Agatha falling into the ocean and turning into a giant kraken. After things are settled instead of going to Brill, Ruby goes to agatha and convinces her to tell the whole truth about her heritage.

Hmm. That would be an interesting scenario. I wonder if Ruby would still want to go to the Kraken kingdom or not or just leave it alone until she met Chelsea.
