WALLE (Dir: Andrew Stanton, 2008).

WALL•E (Dir: Andrew Stanton, 2008).

Combining futurist sci-fi and robot rom-com with a timely ecological message, this 9th feature film from Pixar Animation Studios released by Walt Disney Pictures opens on post-apocalyptic Earth 700 years after humans mass consumerism and neglectful waste management has made the planet uninhabitable. Here trash compactor robot WALL•E, the last of his kind, stoically continues a clean-up operation. Enter Eve, a reconnaissance bot dispatched from starliner Axiom to recover life forms and asses suitability for a possible return of humans to the planet. On discovering a solitary plant sample Eve is summoned by the Axiom pursued by WALL•E. A burgeoning bot romance ensues on their quest to deliver the sapling to the Axiom’s Captain and initiate a return to Earth.

From its opening scenes of an eerie, trash-strewn abandoned Earth to its awe-inspiring space-scapes, the movie is a visual delight. With a titular character who is largely mute, the screenplay by director Andrew Stanton and Jim Reardon is a masterclass in how to tell a moving, thought provoking story with minimal dialogue. Its comments on consumerism, big business, political corruption and the human destruction of Earth are even more pertinent now than when the movie was released a decade ago.

Despite its serious message WALL•E is an utterly joyful, uplifting viewing experience and is refreshing in the entirety uncynical, optimistic approach to its subject.

In 2016 a poll of international critics conducted by BBC Culture voted WALL•E the 29th greatest film of the 21st Century. With this I would disagree, this modern masterpiece is arguably the greatest movie of the century and one of the greatest movies of all time.

DINOSAUR (Dir: Ralph Zondag & Eric Leighton, 2000).

DINOSAUR (Dir: Ralph Zondag & Eric Leighton, 2000).

Travel back 65 million years in Walt Disney Pictures' visually stunning Dinosaur.

Iguanodon Aladar, separated from his mother while still an egg, is adopted by a family of lemurs and raised in the lush tropical surrounds of Lemur Island. When a devastating meteor shower hits, the ensuing deadly dust cloud forces the family to leave their now barren home. Joining a herd of dinos heading for the Nesting Ground, Aladar clashes with group leader Kron whilst catching the eye of his sister Neera. A dino romance ensues, but drought, rockslides and a pair of hungry Carnotaurus threatens the perilous mission at every turn.

With its real life filmed backdrops and detailed CGI dinosaurs, the movie looks beautiful. Yet, this groundbreaking approach to filming is undermined by a pretty pedestrian screenplay which is marred by some unfortunate glib, facile dialogue.

It is perhaps best not to dwell on the story and screenplay elements of Dinosaur, after all its writers didn't. Anyone above the age of 7 is clearly here for the spectacular visuals. This was the first time Disney had utilised CGI on such an elaborate scale in one of its own non-Pixar movies. While computer graphics have undoubtedly been refined in the two decades since its release, the visuals are still mightily impressive. Its most spectacular set-pieces include the meteor storm, the Carnotaurus attack and an opening, following the journey of Aladar's egg from nest to Lemur island, which the studio used as the film's trailer, such was their belief in the strength of the animation.

Dinosaur was a hit with cinema audiences, but not on the scale the studio had hoped. A better script would have undoubtedly elevated it above the status of matinee popcorn fodder; its visuals belonging to an epic on a much grander scale than dialogue and plot suggest. None the less, Dinosaur is a highly entertaining movie, both for dino obsessed kids and grown-ups who are willing to overlook its shortcomings to enjoy the awesome visuals.

TOY STORY 4 (Dir: Josh Cooley, 2019).

TOY STORY 4 (Dir: Josh Cooley, 2019).

Since the first movie was released in 1995, the Toy Story franchise has proven to be one of the most robust, not to mention most lucrative, Hollywood franchises of all time. The original film, a Pixar Animation Studios production released through Walt Disney Pictures, was a massive critical and commercial success, spawning a further two equally successful sequels. After the fairly definitive conclusion of Toy Story 3 (Lee Unkrich, 2010), the prospect of a fourth entry seemed to many unnecessary, albeit not entirely unwelcome.

Toy Story 4 reunites Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the gang and introduces new character Forky. Forky, made by the toys' new owner Bonnie from a plastic spork, pipe-cleaners and other discarded items, is determined to throw himself into the trash where he believes he belongs. Determined not to let this happen, Woody places himself in charge of the spork, a decision which results in the pair becoming separated from Bonnie and their pals. As lost toys they encounter the sinister doll Gabby Gabby and her ventriloquist dummy cohorts and Woody is reunited with old flame Bo Peep.

Happily Toy Story 4 is a sequel which lives up to its mighty predecessors. Director Josh Cooley and screenwriters Stephany Folsom and Andrew Stanton have created a movie that is by turns witty, exciting and ultimately moving. Its message is certainly as poignant as others in the franchise and comes with a climax that that seems pretty darn final.

It goes without saying that the computer generated animation in Disney/Pixar's Toy Story 4 is beautiful. Once again, the vocal performances, notably Tom Hanks as Woody, Tim Allen as Buzz, Annie Potts as Bo and Tony Hale as Forky, are exemplary.

This latest episode of the Toy Story saga thankfully does nothing to tarnish what is arguably the most consistent franchise of them all, while its finale suggests that this really will be the last we see of the gang. If this is the case then more's the pity, although Toy Story 4 definitely provides them with a high on which to go out on.

That is actually so funny to think about

My friend called me this morning and just started off with no hello or anything.

"You know in Once Upon A Studio where every Disney character comes to life? Where are the Pixar characters?"

"It's just the disney characters, the Pixar characters are probably at Pixar studios."

"They're probably fighting for their life."

"Huh."

"The Pixar characters are in life threatening situations every second in some of their movies. They're probably fighting a monster or something."

"Go to sleep."

And I couldn't stop thinking of how funny the idea was

Watched Pixar's Elemental and it was super cute.

The story is pretty generic, but the relationship between Wade & Ember is sweet and carries quite a bit.

Also, genuinely surprised by the racism allegory in the film.

My Drawing Of Lightyear For Those Who Created This Great Movie. I Don't Care If They Say It Was The Worst

My drawing of Lightyear for those who created this great movie. I don't care if they say it was the worst movie, for many it was one of the best movies because it was based on one of the most beloved characters and toys from Toy Story

After A Very Looong Pause, Here I Am With A New Review.

After a very looong pause, here I am with a new review.

Yesterday I finally was able to see Lightyear.

First of all, when I started watching it, I thought it was going to be such a waste of time. Basic space adventure with monsters or bad guys and a really predictable storyline. It ended surprising me for the good though. I even would rate it as one of the best animated films I've seen so far.

The music was okay and special effects were average for an animated movie in 2022. What really caught my attention were the memorable and yet relatable characters who starred the movie.

*The kiss scene was adorable. Fuck off homophobes 💖. *

ALERT SPOILERS AHEAD.

The thing that this movie wants to encourage us to do is, to accept the way things turned out and the way things are, instead of longing or yearning for "what could have been". Learning that sometimes not having things going your way is a blessing in disguise, which is a really valuable lesson for both children and adults. I really appreciate the complexity of the plots with which animated movies are made nowadays. Sometimes our enemies are not out there, but within us.

The characters (lesbian interracial couple, their child and their grandaughter, and two clumsy, inexperienced and average middle aged man and old woman plague the film with their puns, making it more entertaining, and their role in the film is to deconstruct the idea of allmighty powerful hero, showing us that together, we are stronger. All of them are really representantive of our society.

The reference to God's creation by Michelangelo is also a remarkable detail throughout the movie, representing the new paradigm of society.

Finally, Buzz choosing their average team instead of the proffessional army and being a space ranger was a little bit cheesy in my opinion, but it's acceptable.

The storyline is amazing and it's full of action and relentless dynamism, making it incredible attention-grabbing.

DEFINITELY WORTH-WATCHING.

8'5/10

Just a thoght that has been on my mind for a while

Ok I might as well mention something that has always bothered me about the 3rd movie 🧵
These guys did not believe woody that Andy was putting them in the attic, but why, yes woody did accidentally knock buzz off in the 1st movie and he refused to come back home in the 2nd movie https://t.co/wqixnl3u3c
