A curious pamphlet I heard in the film ‘Cruel Romance’ 1984 on the play by Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky ‘Without a Dowry’ 1878. It was said by the hero Vasily Danilovich Vozhevatov, lighting a cigar from a candle.
In the play ‘Without a Dowry’ itself, these lines are not present. They are a reference to another play by Ostrovsky ‘Profitable Place’ in 1856, says this character Vasily Nikolayich Zhadov. The character begins it as a song already known to the people.
As it turned out ‘Profitable Place’ is not the original source of these lines.
Vasily Vasilyevich Kapnist, in 1794-1798 wrote a satirical comedy ‘Yabeda’. (Sneak).
In French, Kapnist titled his play ‘La Chicane‘.
The word has several meanings that also fit the idea perfectly:
1 - slander, pettifogging, 2 - abuse of law, chicane
During the reign of Paul I, the play mocked the court, which was a risky business.
The popularity of ‘La Chicane’ was so great that some expressions of the comedy became proverbs.
The character in the play ‘La Chicane’ prosecutor Khvataiko (‘self-explanatory’ surname Grab\er\) starts singing this song well.
