Grace and Simon, Kreese and Terry: A Destroyed Friendship

What would you think if I told you that this friendship

Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship

is similar to this one?

Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship

So that you can understand it better, here I will explain the similarities between both friendships and the possible fates of Kreese and Terry if they follow the same route as Grace and Simon:

GRACE MONROE AND JOHN KRESSE - PURPOSE, GUILT AND REDEMPTION

Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship
Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship

Grace came from a home where she was ignored by her parents and she could only get their attention through standards that they put on her and she got into trouble just to get their attention and the train picks her up and the fact of being in an unknown place without knowing what besides almost dying if it weren't for the fact that the false conductor (Amelia) inadvertently saved her, makes Grace consider that the train belongs to the passengers and that the denizens of the train have no value and are just decorations.

Kreese on the other hand had a hard life: her mother committed suicide and she had to work to survive and her girlfriend Betsy gave her hope for a happy life. Then comes the Vietnam War, Betsy's death and the rejection of both the government and American citizens towards the soldiers who fought in Vietnam and this ends up marking him for life with his ideology: peace is just an illusion, if not you attack first and hard or if you just don't win then they will kill you.

They both had a difficult life and had traumatic events (Grace being saved by the fake driver from almost dying and Kreese because of everything she lived through during the Vietnam War) that shaped their way of thinking (with Grace it is that the passengers are the only ones that have value and the denizens are only accessories and with Kreese it's that if you do not win and attack first they kill you) but you will wonder why they create Apex and Cobra Kai? The answer is simple: they seek to give meaning to their traumatic experiences and, by extension, they seek purpose in the current environment they find themselves in because if their traumas and pain are meaningless then they will have suffered for nothing.

Also during their stays on the train and in Vietnam respectively, they meet Simon Laurent and Terry Silver who will be their closest friends by sharing their trauma and therefore end up sharing their ideology and will spend years spreading their toxic ideologies to their friends (Simon and Terry) and the younger generation. Grace and Kreese think they're helping the younger generation survive when in reality they're harming them with toxic ideologies that will only bring them trouble in society.

Grace and Kreese continue with this way of life until they meet someone who will not have much of an impact at first but as time goes on will start a snowball effect that will make them question their ideologies: Johnny Lawrence and Hazel.

At first Grace and Kreese have a good relationship with Hazel and Johnny and even come to love them like family (Grace loves Hazel like a little sister and Kreese considers Johnny his son) but they constantly let them down to the point of that Hazel and Johnny don't trust them and want nothing to do with them anymore, this makes Grace and Kreese realize that they have ruined their relationship with them to an irreparable level but these aren't the only relationships they ruined to that level because they also failed in their relationships with Simon and Terry by manipulating and lying to them all the time not to mention that they feel displaced by Hazel and Johnny until they (Simon and Terry) get tired of Grace and Kreese, betray them and lock them up in prisons (Grace is locked in a tape with her memories and Kreese is arrested for a crime he didn't commit). All this, plus the guilt they feel for all their mistakes, forces them to recognize that they have failed and that they need to change for the better, Grace recognizing her mistakes and wanting to change not only herself but also the young people she has failed and lied to and Kreese will (possibly) have to do the same thing Grace did if he wants to fix his life and his relationship with Johnny because if he doesn't, Kreese will live miserable and alone for the rest of his life.

SIMON LAURENT AND TERRY SILVER - LOYALTY, DENIAL AND MADNESS

Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship
Grace And Simon, Kreese And Terry: A Destroyed Friendship

On the other hand, Simon and Terry have followed Grace and Kreese for as long as we've known them, but why are they so loyal to them? That's because Grace and Kreese saved them from dying in the past and Simon and Terry feel indebted to them but Grace and especially Kreese share their views with them and create Apex and Cobra Kai as a result, teaching them a dysfunctional ideology. In addition to taking advantage of Simon and Terry's loyalty by abusing it, manipulating them and (especially Kreese) mistreating them.

Simon and Terry are willing to prove their loyalty to Grace and Kreese to the point that they do horrible things to do it (Simon kills Tuba behind Grace's back and Terry almost kills Johnny) and this makes Grace and Kreese angry and they don't know. This is because Grace and Kreese are inadvertently changing due to their relationship with Hazel and Johnny, and by extension, are doing the opposite of the ideologies that govern their lives and their respective organizations (Kreese has compassion for Johnny and saves him from dying and Grace shows grief and pity for Tuba, a train denizen) so Simon and Terry feel like they were lied to all along and as King said in The Owl House season 2 episode 16 Hollow Mind:

King: No one wants to think they've wasted their life following the wrong person.

And this is what happens with Simon and Terry, they don't want to change because that would imply recognizing that they have been following a flawed ideology, a lie and they don't want to feel that their loyalty was for a lie, was for nothing and they choose to blame Grace and Kreese for betraying what they want to believe is the truth.

Also Simon and Terry realize that Grace and Kreese's change is motivated by Hazel and Johnny and at the same time they feel displaced by them.

All of the above (the constant exploitation and manipulation, feeling cheated and betrayed, not wanting to recognize that their ideology doesn't work, and feeling that they were displaced by someone else) makes Simon and Terry tire of Grace and Kreese, betraying and locking them up while they usurp their positions as leaders of their organizations (Apex and Cobra Kai) and while this is happening Grace and (possibly) Kreese reflect on their mistakes and are willing to change while Simon and Terry continue to refuse to acknowledge their mistakes to the point that this effort for denying the truth and refusing to recognize his mistakes turns into madness, making Simon turn the Apex into a cult himself and wants to kill Grace when he returns and possibly Terry ends up turning Cobra Kai into a cult himself too and wants to kill to Kreese when he gets out of jail. All this leads to Simon's death and if Terry continues with that same way of thinking he could end up like Simon.

Kreese and Terry are the toxic versions of Grace and Simon because Kreese is what Grace would have been if she hadn't realized her mistakes and that her way of thinking was wrong and Terry is what Simon would have been if the latter had remained alive and would have returned from the infinity train to the real world.

In conclusion, Grace and possibly Kreese recognize their mistakes and are willing to change, taking a step to redeem themselves while Simon and possibly Terry refuse to change and this only leads them to step into the abyss.

Tips for Redeemed! Simon Laurent AU writers

Before starting i just want to clarify this is only an opinion and you can think otherwise if you want anyway here we go!

I still think that a redeemed Simon from infinity train even tho he would be redeemed at some point in your AU he should not loose his character traits i mean he should be showing traces of inmature, logical, controlling, insecure, distrustful, frustrated, short tempered, straight forward, stubborn, (because of his own low emotional intelligence) fun loving and cute child like behavior at times (just let the negative traits show mildly as a remnant of his old self so he dosen´t turn back to villain or if your are going to use them like that make him struggle with that and turn back to rason) besides his hobbies with his novel and miniatures oh.. and also make him extremly edgy and grumpy… because he was a villain remember?… aaaand not a nice one either….

finally our boy would have a lot of emotional walls to keep pepole from getting close, because both he dosent want to get hurt and also because he belives he is unworthy of love (After all the damage he has done and understanding it and with that temper and emotions of his he would want to stay away from pepole.)

Simon could actually come back

the eon ocilator (the evolution thermostat that these guys had) on season 4

image

said artifact with the right modifications can restore things in a point forward or backwards in their evolution... said artifact dont have any limits tho repairing broken things and stuff

if that´s the case then using the artifact Grace or Samantha could... (GASP)

image

On why tho...

Samantha could resurrect Simon because of guilt for indirectly causing his own demise (she knows the train better than anyone so probably knows where the artifact is and how to use it)

image

Grace could resurrect simon too if she had said arftifact from the apex previous raids as for why is because (a) she still apreciates his friend and because of 8 years of friendship (b) she still fells guilty about it deep inside emotionally even tho she admited it was not responsable for it at first she would be hesitant (because he was the most terrible person you could imagine) and probaly would be spending days thinking if she should resurrect him or not...but if she does it.. it could have 2 outcomes

image

Simon dosen´t change and keeps being a villan in the series

image

Simon opens a path for redemption (unlikely... possible but unlikely unless he is resurrected in child form (it dosent seems that the artifact can turn back mentality but everything is possible))

image

however there are one requisite for this to happen: Grace or Samantha must have keeped simon´s remains

This is only an idea and could be wrong... but seems oddly convinient to introdue an artifact that can turn back or forward time itself on certain objects it is placed on like a train car, a giant piglet, a porcelain cow, etc. anyway writers now that infinity train has ended for now... this can be used as ideas for a future AU for your fics...

Simon character analisis again

Simon Has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He Also Has Depression As Well As Trauma. The Latter Of

Simon has Narcissistic Personality Disorder. He also has depression as well as trauma. The latter of which is part of the reason the train came to him in the first place. However, Simon is in denial over having been traumatized.

He’s insistent over being “too strong” to be traumatized, and “too smart” to ever fall into a traumatic situation. But it’s all simply denial.

Simon has a lot of issues so lets give more psycholgy understanding about his character in your au in case you want to keep him a villain

This Episode, Their Dynamic In It, And The Impact Is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO Underrated. If You Ever Had Somebody
This Episode, Their Dynamic In It, And The Impact Is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO Underrated. If You Ever Had Somebody

This episode, their dynamic in it, and the impact is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO underrated. If you ever had somebody you thought you could trust be right next to you going through something and they have ZERO sympathy, no empathy, then they antagonize you and when you're vulnerable and frustrated they mentally attack you...

This episode was one of the most realistic depictions that I've ever seen of that type of anguish. I had years of that from someone and the way this cartoon that y'all lie to yourselves and say is for kids so accurately showed me images of my own life from 18-early 20s with a toxic, traumatized man that I thought loved me for whatever reason.

I'm still shook by this episode. My skin was crawling. Had he been able to get into my brain and cause more damage...

more analysis for Simon Laurent

Something about Simon that I noticed that proves that he is very good written

The way he owns so many gadgets.

He doesn't have only the harpoonpack, he also has the number tracker and the anti gravity boots.

Why?

Couse he is scared that something will happened and he won't be prepared.

He wants to be organized and prepared couse he is constantly overthinking if something will happen.

And you know what overthinking is a symptom of?

Anxiety.

Which without doubt Simon had.

The way he was anxious about being in a new situation that he wasn't prepared for.

As soon as he entered the Jungle Car, he wanted to check if they were prepared for whatever can happen next.

In conclusion,

Simon is not just a bad male character. He is a human being with a personality. He has a personality, he has his interests, opinions.

This is what Book 3 showed us, that even the bad guys. The most horrible people, have personalities.

more Simon analysis

Simon is having an anxiety attack while Grace is just chilling - Simon and Grace about Change

Simon Is Having An Anxiety Attack While Grace Is Just Chilling - Simon And Grace About Change

In just second episode we could see their views on change

Simon is scared of change. It makes him feel anxious, it takes away his safety. When they entered the jungle car, he got scared of sudden change of situation and place. He got calmer about when Grace told him that "it's gonna be like old times", she made him think that they're not really in a new situation, she made this situation remain him of old times, safe times.

Grace was chill about sudden change of place. She was curious, positive about it. She saw the positives, like that she has Simon by her side.

He was scared of change.

She wanted to explore it.

Simon might have taken the wrong choices but however lets not forget that Grace played a part on it even if it was unkowingly… if you want to create a reason why Simon is mad at Grace and create something from his perspective this is for you... and remember in this tragedy nobody is to blame.

Should Simon Have Friend-Dumped Grace?

Note: this article does not sufficiently weigh Simon’s bad behaviors in Episode 11, “The New Apex”. This article has been kept unmodified for posterity.

Part 1 of 2: Series Abstract and “Strikes”

(Caveat: there’s a convincing case to be made they’re in a codependent abusive relationship, so treating this as a friendship gone bad may be the incorrect protocol or oversimplified. Still, for the sake of not re-writing the whole thing, it will be presented with the thesis they were originally close friends. Due to the difficulty of researching causes to friend-dump someone who isn’t toxic, some references come from toxic-friend protocol, so there would be some overlap.)

Should Simon Have Friend-Dumped Grace?

Abstract

The protagonists of Infinity Train’s third season, Grace Monroe and Simon Laurent, start off very close. However, as the season progresses, their friendship deteriorates, as clear through dialogue, but also facial expressions, body language, and vocal details. And yet, Simon chose to stay with her and obey her, if with increasing reluctance, and cared deeply about her (to him) inexplicable behavior changes. And it’s because he cared so much about Grace that he had to find out what was causing everything, leading to that shocking moment: “We….just won’t tell Simon, okay?” Later on, he shoves her off a train bridge to certain death, and briefly looks shocked and sad before he descends into maniacal laughter, and is then killed by a Ghom.

Perhaps if Simon had friend-dumped Grace earlier on, he could have avoided much of his turmoil.

Should Simon Have Friend-Dumped Grace?

Part 2 of 2: Conclusions

Note: this article does not sufficiently weigh Simon’s bad behaviors in Episode 11, “The New Apex”. This article has been kept unmodified for posterity.

(For the purpose of this article, “friend-dumping” will mean leaving Grace behind before The Origami Car and cutting her out of his life, whether by exiling her from The Apex or Simon leaving The Apex.)

Should Simon Have Friend-Dumped Grace?

So what happens next?

There are strong arguments for and against Simon friend-dumping Grace, which can be sorted into both moral and practical reasoning.

Since there’s a bunch of you in the notes genuinely confused on his logic here: Basically he saw himself in Hazel.

He saw the trauma that losing the cat put him through as character building that taught him a valuable lesson about Denizens, and that this action was ripping off a bandaid like telling a kid the truth about Santa or that their hamster didn’t actually go to a farm upstate.

He really, really thought he was doing a favor for her by breaking her attachment for Tuba in this fashion sooner instead of later, and honestly, and you can hear it in the way he explains himself, “I know you might not understand now, but trust me…”

He expected a negative reaction from Hazel, but the kind that she would grow out of once she joined the Apex and was indoctrinated into the same cult as the rest of them.

Grace on the other hand, he was hoping for approval from. The both of them were supposed to be on the same page in his mind. See, he’s her secondary when it comes to running the club for a good reason, besides his almost puppyish little crush-

Simon. is. horrible. at emphasizing with and understanding how other people think. Which actually makes him a terrible manipulator and simultaneously demonstrates why it’s a strong suit for Grace. He’s too blunt and impulsive. He doesn’t naturally take to this beating around the bush and Machiavellian way of getting what he wants. He BELIEVES in everything the Apex is and stands for whole heartedly. To Grace, a lot of it was something she constructed on the fly for power. To Simon, it’s unquestionable dogma and the only lens to view world through that makes sense.

Point was that Grace has years of experience in being the one who actually recruits new members in and sells them on the Apex narrative. She’s the leader and speaker for the group and she is followed because the kids look up to her for guidance and protection. Simon led them by blustering around his number, demanding respect for his authority, and relying on the fact that they were guilible children who remembered him as Grace’s close friend. And even they were aware of how obviously he was unraveled and becoming incoherent shortly after his takeover. He’s not good with kids. He’s not good with people. He had one person within the group he attached completely onto because she was.

But what reason did he have to think that Grace was starting to feel second thoughts regarding the denizens? All of the previous destruction of these train NPCs was at her order and instigation. Killing them was, according to the dogma up to this point, just a matter of racking up more points on a leaderboard. The Grace he knew since he was a young child WOULD praise him for finding a clever way to take down such an intimidating denizen.

But this Grace was doing everything she could to actively hide the empathy she was starting to feel for Tuba, and Simon trusted her word completely. When he does fuck up and make her upset, he really does believe that his problem was that he didn’t understand well enough how/when Grace wanted to deal with Tuba, or that he acted too quickly without her permission… not.. that he wheeled Hazel’s mom and Grace’s new friend. That was nowhere even in the realm of possibility for him.

Like that really is how warped and naive of a person he is. For nearly his whole life he was never given a context/framework to view this whole situation through that makes him a bad guy for it. And boy does he have a lot of mental capital invested in the framework he does accept not being broken for him.

And to me, that makes his personal fanaticism so terrifying. It’s a kind of evil that is near-impossibly difficult to reason a person back out of, and it’s a disturbingly realistic one.
