Okay so I have talked about author's intent before. I am going to expand on that in this post.

Manga is basically a moving picture without the moving in it. It's basically a film with all its features including images, dialogues, narration, sound effects, special effects, and editing.

Just like a film, it also sets up a certain narrative and story with a commensurate pace, mood, context, action (or inaction) and characterisation which then informs its style and visual approach. It's basically a very detailed storyboard of a film. Storyboarding happens at the pre production stage of a film, for ease of the cinematographers, and directors to set up their location and sets accordingly. This is what a storyboard looks like. This is Star Wars btw.

Is Kishi inspired by films? He is a huge fan, it's his favourite hobby. There's a reason his work is considered cinematic by critics.

So for a certain scene or panel to make sense, or for it to stand out, the mangaka will set its background up. And when you look at Naruto manga, the author does everything in his power and uses everything in his skillset to tell this love story. Everything that happens in this manga regarding Naruto and Sasuke's relationship has a certain context behind it, and it's important to notice this, because the information that the author gives you prior to a significant panel or a certain dialogue, or a certain visual, it can be any little thing. But with Naruto, it's everything.

Kishi spares no effort to get his point across. Of course, audience that wants to see it will see it. Those who don't, will prefer their own reading, however lacking, single mindedly ignorant and uninspired.

Anyway.

So this scene here is an important scene. Why? Because it gives us important information about Sasuke's feelings for Naruto. Trying to protect Naruto here was a really pointless move by Sasuke, given it would have only caused a bruise at most. But Sasuke is so in love with this boy, that he can't see him get hurt, even a little bit. We do have precedents, of course, where Sasuke protects Naruto several times even at the cost of his 'life', he also protects Sakura in the forest of death arc, they are his comrades and Sasuke doesn't want them to be hurt. Naturally.

But why is this particular scene important and how does this scene differ from the others? Apart from the fact that it is extraneous and unnecessary, tbf, Sasuke is almost completely out of juice due to the curse seal. So for him to go so out of his way to protect Naruto from hardly even a bruise, emphasizes just how much Sasuke treasures Naruto and wants to protect him.

Does Kishimoto set up context for it? You bet your ass he does. Starts here.

Naruto gets knocked into a tree by a transformed Gaara and Sasuke's watching carefully. He is aware that something is not quite right with Naruto (because Naruto was apprehensive of fighting Gaara given what he had seen of him earlier, which is unlike him). But the point I am making is one has to pay attention to the visuals and context.

Again.

Sasuke's watching while Naruto gets knocked into trees and bushes.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And again. Sigh...

Sasuke's. Watching. Carefully.

So when this finally happens,

It gives the audience a solid context, and brings their attention closer to this panel, and the action that happens in it. It pulls focus to its importance through constant repetition. What does the repetition signify? Author's intent. For emphasis.

Kishi builds up to this moment across three chapters, he is making the audience somehow anticipate some action that would make sense of these repetitive visuals. He is doing everything to make sure that on a subliminal level, the audience knows why this moment is significant and special. And he doesn't stop there. He makes the dog say it out loud.

Pakkun is emphasizing Sasuke's attempt to protect Naruto despite his obvious handicap, as if a thousand visuals were not enough. Yes Kish, we get it. Sasuke loves Naruto, Naruto is his precious, we know. We have known since land of waves arc, you aren't that discreet.

It's really like Kishi doesn't want the audience to be confused as to what's happening, this is in no way being discreet. Like take my word for it, anyone who knows how visual language works, can instantly tell you author's intent here. Even if they didn't, it wouldn't matter. Because at an unconscious level, the author has already made you feel that this is an important moment. Whether you consciously realize it or not. That's how visual language works, and this is where author's talent lies.

I know that antis don't see any of it. Or even consider seeing it.

Anyone who ships Sasuke and Naruto, be assured that you caught on the author 's intent, and you were right to trust your instincts. Don't get panicked by whatever the antis say, it doesn't matter, they don't know what they are talking about, just let them be.

And those who say it's all a bait are even sillier. Because at least the others have shipping lenses on, so I get they are affected by their emotional urges. But those who think SNS is unintentional and a total bait are just lying to themselves because they think they are smarter than the whole manga industry, tch, embarrassing.

Kishimoto was pretty consistent towards drawing Sakura’s confessions to Sasuke and Sasuke’s reaction to Sakura. Sakura always whining or snotting it up. He always paid a lot of attention to drawing Sasuke, apparently his favourite character to draw. 

The thing to notice here is Sasuke’s body language towards Sakura every time she confesses to him. Always the same. 

Sasuke’s stance is always the same. His back to Sakura, telling her off in very straight terms over his shoulder. His expression towards her is always openly insulting, with either a glare or smirk. This is typically the body language for casual dismissal and feeling completely unthreatened. Shown towards someone unimportant and insignificant.

It also happens when Kakashi is talking to him about Sakura’s confession, but Sasuke doesn’t give a flying fig about Kakashi either. Can’t even bother to turn back and acknowledge the sentiment of these highly emotionally charged words. And so :

But when it comes to Naruto… :

He would always acknowledge Naruto. No matter how overwhelmed, pissed off or angry he is, he would always listen to what Naruto has to say. He may not agree with Naruto, but he would make time. He would of course lie to himself that it doesn’t matter :

He wants to hear him out, no matter how much he might delude himself.

I keep hearing that Sasuke and Sakura’s dynamic was made to look bad in anime, but that in the manga they are pretty romantic.

Are they though? (Shakes head dejectedly..)

Anyway, Kishimoto knew what he was doing. 

You once said when Rin died on Kakashi's hand Obito's world was crushed, is it the same with Team 7 photo shattered in Naruto's mind when Sasuke has death warrant? Naruto and Obito's core are the same and both Rin and Sasuke are Naruto and Obito's loved one (hehe). If so, I think it's hypocrite for Naruto fandom to sympathize with Naruto on Kage Summit arc but deemed Obito as simp (although I also found many people mocked Naruto too for his panic attack). For them, their world was crushed the moment their lovers were gone so since I understand Naruto's desperation on Kage Summit arc I also understand Obito's desperation when Rin died.

Kind of Yes and No!!! 

Yes... For the way you compared Rin for Obito and Sasuke for Naruto... 

No.... For the comparison you made as to what Team 7 meant to Naruto than what Team Minato meant to Obito. And let me tell you why.

I would say Obito was more Honest, Loving and Caring person as a Team mate than Naruto ever was or will be. Because Naruto shows clear-cut favouritism towards Sasuke ALL THE TIMES. Which Obito would never ever do. 

For Example,

“I can’t waste time here... Wait for me... Kakashi... Rin!!! I am Alive!!!”

Here, Obito was equally thinking about both of his Team mates... And his desire from the bottom of his heart to reach out Kakashi and Rin as soon as possible. Look at the way he was dragging his body so hard.

And during his time when he was forcibly stuck with Madara in that cave, 

He was pushing beyond his limit to become stronger by thinking about his Entire Team and the happy days he spent with them. He could have easily thought about just Rin you know... But the presence of his whole team motivates him and gives him power.

Whereas this certain someone... **Ahem Ahem***

Naruto was also training here to become stronger just like Obito was in the previous panel... But Naruto singles out Sasuke’s name and pines softly.

Have you ever seen Naruto fondly thinking about Sakura not under the context of Sasuke???? 

Just once??? 

When he heard his teammates were in Danger, the very first question he asked was, “What’s Minato-Sensei Doing?! You know the Yellow Flash” And was frustrated with the fact that his Heroic Sensei was not there when he was really needed. 

And he straight up remembers Kakashi’s promise to him to protect Rin. Since He died without any regret because he believed Kakashi would protect Rin. Please look at the desperation Obito shows to save Rin and Kakashi... 

Now compare that with this...

Naruto clearly heard Kakashi’s words about Sakura being in danger because she is no match with Sasuke... But he just ignored that part about Sakura and went onto brainrot about Sasuke as if Sakura’s life means nothing. Whereas Kakashi as a Sensei, wanted to chase her and protect her from her eventual death. 

Man, If this were Obito, he would’ve chased Sakura the moment he heard about this. He wouldn’t be acting so complacent or lost in thoughts, you know. 

In their childhood, When Kakashi asked Obito to ignore Rin and to continue the mission... 

Obito punched Kakashi’s face...

When Sasuke acted on his self-defense and tried to kill Sakura... Naruto asked why did he do that since she was a Team 7 member and all... 

But few moments later..

I can’t even keep a straight face while attaching this picture... No explanation needed, Right??? Obito wouldn’t laugh like this, you know...

So, Obito’s entire identity and emotions revolve around his Entire Team... Of Course, Rin is Special... In a very obvious way. But Obito would never ignore Kakashi like Naruto ignored Sakura. Otherwise Obito wouldn’t have died protecting him by offering his Sharingan. It’s for this exact reason, I’ve claimed many times that Obito was a better Shonen type Protagonist than Naruto ever will be...

And that’s why When he saw Rin’s death with his very own eyes, he couldn’t believe that reality...

A reality where his Sensei whom he admired so much had Failed him... 

A Rival/Friend whom he finally befriended/respected also Failed him... 

He couldn’t accept any of these...

Obito could’ve easily killed Kakashi here. Or he could’ve easily snatched his eyeballs so that he could use it to perform Susanoo by himself or to perform many other interesting Jutsus... (Considering he had 100′s of Sharingan stock that he collected after Uchiha Clan Massacre...)... But he, clearly didn’t want to do any of that. 

Obito’s world was crashed... And he wanted to rebuild a new world with his treasured people in it. And His decision to build a Dream World majorly stems out of Rin’s loss... Yess... But also, the collective failure of his Team Members also played a part in it. If it was just for Rin... He would’ve slaughtered Kakashi into pieces right then and there..

Compared to that...

Naruto’s crash of his Team 7 was ONLY ATTRIBUTED TO SASUKE and SASUKE alone. Because right after this... 

Naruto ignored Sakura’s immediate life in danger but hyperventilated for Sasuke’s eventual Death in the Future... 

Naruto admitted that Iruka and Sasuke were his important people and that he was in Team 7 to chase him... to build a bond with him... Not Sakura or Kakashi

Naruto didn’t react strongly when Sasuke tried to kill his Team Mate and much later he gleefully said to Sasuke that... “I am really glad I met you”...

Obito could’ve easily just thought about Rin alone or he could have ignored the pieces of Minato and Kakashi... to prevent Juubi from taking over his mind. But he mended his entire Team back from the torn pieces to get his mind back... Which shows his Identity in this world.

The Point I am trying to make here is that Naruto’s attachment to this world was credited only to Iruka and Sasuke and... Sasuke just happened to end up in the same team as him and hence he thought about that Team 7 picture a lot.. Not to mention, he had immense respect on Kakashi too.

 Whereas Obito’s attachment to this world is attributed to Entire Team Minato with Rin as the Axis. Team Minato was more personal to Obito than Team 7 was to Naruto. 

Something about this scene;

I know some people have naturally used this scene to argue Naruto is straight because of his reaction. But I think the scene is more nuanced than that. As we can see Sakura reacts with nosebleed to this jutsu, which symbolises arousal.

But Naruto doesn’t have a nosebleed towards the girl-girl jutsu, he’s just excited over Konohamaru’s new ability, as he explains this is a friendly competition between them. So he’s not excited in that way. Why not just make him react like Sakura? Because their reactions aren’t the same.

We do know Naruto finds Sasuke attractive even if he is hesitant to admit that (like he knows it might be inappropriate) and does the reverse harem jutsu later which he practiced more than rasengan. But somehow the Sai/Sasuke jutsu is too much in his opinion. In my opinion the obvious explanation is just that he doesn’t want to see Sasuke like that with someone else. I mean:

It’s not like he doesn’t dislike Suigetsu (and Taka) for no reason other than that they used to hang around Sasuke… and it’s not like he doesn’t react dramatically concerning Sasuke any other time…

I remember seeing even Japanese men who said Naruto sounded like a jealous boyfriend in that 4-tails moment. 😭

heyy i love your blog so much and you’re my fav naruto blog as well! i wanted to ask if you could explain how sakura stayed useless even in shippuden where apparently she got her so callled character development. i know, at least from my experience, that now people are starting to like sakura more and praise her for the bare minimum. my biggest issue with her is the fact she’s a main character (and her personality but that’s just my opinion. people can like her for her personality tho) but doesn’t contribute anything relevant to the plot. even if she wasn’t there nothing about the plot would have changed. she’s so irrelevant which makes me wonder why she’s even there in the first place. and then you have her fans who try to “debunk” any argument against her that says she’s useless when in reality she is, especially in crucial moments (like her having to destroy obitos rinnegan but her hesitating for whatever reason.) being a medical ninja doesn’t mean she’s useless. i guess some fans misunderstand what many anti-sakuras are saying. it’s the fact she doesn’t do anything when the stakes are at cost. all she does is cry and say she’ll get better next time and when next time arrives she whines and complains again. only time i could give her halfway credit was her fight at the BEGINNING of shippuden against sasori, but even then she was being used as a puppet by chiyo and sasori let himself be killed, cause let’s be honest if sasori wanted to he could have easily destroyed them. anyway, my point is her being a medical ninja or not as strong/powerful as sasuke or naruto isn’t the reason, at least for me, to call her useless, but the mere fact she is a) just mediocre at her job. she didn’t invent anything new, all she did was copy what tsunade had already invented. b) she literally does her JOB. nothing to be praised about. it’s legit what she’s supposed to do. c) she makes a fool out of herself when she decides to show off her skills (mainly cause sasuke is around, which again further proves her “development” doesn’t even exist). like i would be fine with people just accepting sakuras character as it is but i feel like today’s generation tries SO hard to make ANY female character into a “girl boss” even tho they freaking suck. i as a woman am insulted at seeing stuff like that tbh. like i completely get wanting to have strong, independent & powerful female characters, i do, but then look for actual strong women (doesn’t even have to be in narutoverse but if it had to be we have kushina, tsunade, konan). like why try to make an obviously bad character into a feminist icon? it’s just cringe. anyway sorry for the long ask/rant. i hope you’ll have a great day/night!

I heard a lot about Sakura's 'Character Development' in the beginning of Shippuden. But somehow I always get perplexed by this statement. Why didn’t I see any development from her??? Did I went blind when I watched it????

Just because a girl learnt a Jutsu or Two and punches few stuffs..... It can't be called a Character Development...... It's called becoming Mary Sue...... A true Character Development is when a Character learns some life lesson after some time and emotionally mature enough to take some decision... Whether it's a right one or wrong is a different thing altogether.....

Of course, this Girl cured Kankurou by developing an Antidote.... Kudos.

Of course, this Girl learnt her Chakra control very well and she can able to break anything. Cheers!!!

Of course, she worked in sync with Granny Chiyo to fight with Sasori.... (Not defeat him though)

What about her emotional development????

I don’t know what people find in this Girl from this Arc and they boldly claim that this girl got Development..... But to me... She doesn’t look like someone who got over the itch to obtain Sasuke’s dick. Plain and Simple!!!!! 

If people call her Learning a Jutsu or two by punching the shit out of everyone as a proof of development.... Then all they expect from this character is to be a Mary Sue.....  or Captain Marvel or Wonder Woman!!!! Not some woman who is able to endure anything to save other people... They don’t really care about her Emotional Development!!!!!!

But I must agree that.... She became tolerable in this Arc.... I didn’t find any irritation or disgust like I got from her during Part 1. (Though I got some mild disgust here and there)

But being Tolerable is not Development!!!!

With Tsunade, Konan and Kushina.... You won’t get such eye candies and hot smex .... Would You???? 

That’s why they consider her as a feminist icon. 

doesn’t contribute anything relevant to the plot. even if she wasn’t there nothing about the plot would have changed. she’s so irrelevant which makes me wonder why she’s even there in the first place.

I am writing another lengthy post on this... But I’ll explain very short here... 

She is very similar to Naruto in many aspects if you really pay attention to her character. For example..... Naruto likes to prank.... Sakura too..... Naruto has inferiority complex.... Sakura too.... Naruto loves Sasuke.... Sakura too.... And there are so many....

At the same time.... Sakura is entirely opposite to Naruto in many aspects which made her thoroughly despicable... For example.... Naruto is a person who desperately tries to understand other people.... Sakura is purely Selfish.... Naruto cares about all of his friends.... Sakura don’t. 

Her first purpose in this story is to show the readers that 

How Naruto is the best person for Sasuke than Sakura ever would be and 

How Sasuke shows his difference in behaviour towards Naruto and Sakura....  

Her second purpose in this story is to use her as a Gay Shield/ Beard for Naruto.... 

Every reaction Naruto gives for Sasuke is very similar to Sakura in many ways.... If Naruto alone chases Sasuke, it would be very obvious and gives off serious Homosexual vibes... Add Sakura along with him... It won’t be blatantly evident because people have Heteronormative Lens and Kishi just used it against them. 

Like if you really notice, every time Sakura confesses her Love.... Right after that Naruto also confesses something to Sasuke which always makes him go Wide eyed.... Be it in VoTE1 and VoTE2... 

CONFESSION 1::

This Girl is screaming “I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU THAT I CAN’T EVEN STAND IT (Loneliness)”..... 

And that’s his response!!!!

Whereas Naruto just said... “You are my first Bond..... “ For which Sasuke went really wide-eyed and went on to evolve his Sharingan....

CONFESSION 2::

Again Sakura saying the same thing... She even says that she could’ve done anything to bear his pain and that she loves him and cares about him.... 

LOL.... No explanation Needed.

Whereas Naruto just said, “It hurts whenever I see you suffer...” There is no I Love you or any grand confession... It’s very simple words...

And Sasuke goes Wide-Eyed again....

These are the differences Kishimoto wanted to show between Naruto and Sakura. And he used her in whatever the way he saw fit... Because he fucking can!!!! The fact that people are so narrow-minded to the point that they need a confession from a girl is enough to ship 2 people...  Whereas they don’t really care about how a Boy really feels. If they truly cared about N and S’ feelings people wouldn’t have shipped Hinata and Sakura with these boys... 

That’s why he intentionally wrote these two characters to be worthless and despicable and as Gay Shields. But still people went onto like these Useless Girls and made him write some shitty sequel and he is not even holding back... He is deriding these two girls with a burning passion even more. 

Only perceptive viewers can notice these nuances....

To understand the existence of a Character in any media, all we have to do is to Question ourselves.... 

Why this character is like this for 700 chapters??? 

Why didn’t this character evolve??? 

What are the other parallel characters for Sakura??? 

If Kishi can make Tsunade (her parallel from another Generation who is very similar to her personality) in to a Strong Lady what was stopping him from making Sakura like that???? 

If Kishi can make Rin (her direct parallel from one generation above who is also a Medic) in to a Tolerable, Talented enough to do eye transplant within minutes, Kind and Caring person.... What’s stopping him from making Sakura like that???

If Kishi can make Karin (her direct parallel in terms of Loving Sasuke) in to a useful person who doesn’t require the Validation of Sasuke and had many interesting Jutsu in her Arsenal... What’s stopping him from making Sakura like that????

If you ask all these questions to yourself..... You’ll get the answer. 

It’s just like Kishi said once.... It’s a Love Triangle where Sakura sees Naruto as her rival with Sasuke as the Central Figure. 

That’s why in Chapter 699... Sasuke rejects her with a Poke whereas he accepts Naruto by receiving back the symbol of his Bond, that striked out Hitai Ate, which brings the Love Triangle to an Indirect Conclusion. 

So Yeah.... In Short.... Sakura’s existence in this story is to be the (Love) Rival for Naruto and also as a Beard. They can like her for the way she is but blaming the Author is just pure Idiotic.

Talking to Sasuke wasn't going to change his decision at that moment and Naruto punches him because it was the only form of communication he knew how to do in that situation. They can understand each other only by clenching their fists and hitting hard. Sasuke never broke his eye contact with Naruto when receiving each punch and he never tried to dodge his punches. And also, Sasuke spat blood in Naruto's face, not breaking his eye contact, he's like: 'Are you done, does that make you feel better?'. Eye contact is a very emotional thing, and when you're already in an emotional situation, eye contact can amplify those feelings. Sasuke was so close underneath him that he could see Naruto's pained expression as he told Sasuke that the fight he always wanted wasn't the (hospital) fight, which was why his pain was reflected in Sasuke's eyes as well. Because Naruto doesn't want to hurt him. This wasn't the kind of fight he wanted with Sasuke. He says he doesn't want to hurt him even at that moment, but Sasuke doesn't let him finish what he was about to say. Because Sasuke knows. He knows. Naruto's pain has a great effect on him. So he started hitting him back.

In the vote2, Sasuke avoids eye contact with Naruto while screaming (loudly) and punching him hard. He can't bear the thought of hurting Naruto. He doesn't want to see emotional pain (or sadness) in his eyes because he caused it. [[Oi Oii, don't say anything bad about Sasuke bcz Naruto accepted Sasuke as Sasuke, declaring that he was the only one who could carry his burden and die with him. It was his own responsibility and no one else's]]. You can see that Sasuke is in pain from his facial expressions of lowering his eyebrows, raising his cheeks, tightening his eyelids, screaming, and closing his eyes. And Naruto doesn't break eye contact from him. As if he saying 'Does that make you feel better, Sasuke?'. Because of that, in the next panel, Sasuke doesn't look directly at him, just closes his eyes and aims a punch with a scream. One reason he had closed his eyes was to escape the pain. Another thing is that Naruto knows Sasuke better than anyone, when Sasuke punches Naruto, he can clearly see Sasuke's face when he's underneath him, so he knows what emotions are reflected in his eyes. Even if he closes his eyes, he knows. He is in pain. Hurting each other doesn't make either of them feel better.

Mild comparative analysis between Naruto and Romeo and Juliet:

Leaving this one page summary of Romeo and Juliet in place of something more comprehensive, but at the the crux of it, in the play we're met with two teenagers who find refuge in their love for eachother in the midst of the stifling, hyper urban sociopolitical landscape in Verona and decide to fight to be with eachother even in the face of negative consequences. Then a series of unfortunate events occurs and we're left with the tragic ending.

One of the ways they combatted their oppressive landscape was via a "green world." First coined by Northrop Fyre in his "Anatomy of a Criticism," a green world was a literal natural and wild forest setting imbued with magical elements (ie. fairies) that was primarily utilized by Shakespeare in his comedies as a way for his characters to escape the normal world and enter a separate relationship where they could adress/resolve their conflicts + and achieve "metamorphosis."

In Romeo and Juliet, a green world comes in the form of an orchard beneath Juliet's balcony in the second act. Is is there where they are open with one a other about their feelings and express grief over the fact that they're seperated because of family feuding and societal expectations. And it is there where they reaffirm their love and devotion to one another before they part again.

In Naruto, I believe Narusasu's "green world" comes in the form of their shared mindscape that appears every time they clash/their jutsu meet and they subsequently open up about their feelings. Besides the physical landscape of The Valley of the End, it is the place where they share the most vulnerability together. And it is the manifestation of their repressed and/or unrealized desires to connect with and understand one another.

The construction of their "green world" is always preceded by isolated imagery of them reaching out to one but being physically separated by their weapons of choice (the rasengan and chidori). In this sense, there's a cruel irony in that their moments of emotional intimacy happen in the midst of extreme violence, but it's fitting given Kishimoto's thematic setup. Naruto and Sasuke have been brought up in a corrupt feudalistic landscape. Their shinobi world is wrought with cruelty and breeds ninjas that are taught to disconnect from their humanity to become better tools at their villages' beck and call. There is only room for unquestioning dogmatic loyalty and anything less makes you an enemy. The only way they can interact is through violence.

And this is where the interesting addition to the sociopolitical layer in narusasu's dynamic comes in. On a smaller scale, they are separated from each other by their own shortcomings like jealousy and insecurity, but like Romeo and Juliet their care for eachother is considered "transgressive" because of Sasuke's status as a missing nin. Sasuke becomes a "criminal" after rejecting the village that marginalized and extrajudicially genocided his clan. And Naruto, who was sacrificed to maintain the balance of power in Konoha (by having a chakra manifestation of hatred placed in him), is caught between his new staus as a loyal jinchuriki citizen and weapon for the village and his desire to help shoulder Sasuke's burdens and pain.

However, unlike in Romeo and Juliet, there is no beautiful natural refuge for Naruto and Sasuke to meet and and solve their problems. Violence is embedded in their way of living and thus their "green world" or shared mindscape is something they physically create in combat. It is the fruit of their hard work and achievements as ninja in a series where emotional development is also tied to their physical development. And Naruto and Sasuke utilize it accordingly.

It is where they meet and get a glimpse of what the other is feeling. It is where we see the anguish Naruto and Sasuke felt over being torn apart from eachother in VOTE 1 because of external circumstances out of their contol (ie. Oro's curse mark). It is where Naruto opens up about his insecurites and reaffirms his love for Sasuke in a monologue that mirrors Hinata's confession to him in the Pain arc, and his own sentiments from VOTE 1 ("I'm really happy I met you!"). And in VOTE 2 it's where Sasuke tells Naruto, his one and only friend, that they understand eachother's hearts and he has to cut him off to fully be lonely. Through it we got to see the level of care and devlopment put into their bond and their individual characterizations.

And the fact that their last two conversations in the manga take place in the real world is a testament to the fact that they'd outgrown the need for a seperate mental landscape to communicate. It was a sign that they could interact positively without their fists and work to change the systemic issues that led to the series of tragic events that seperated them.

i read chapter 698 as a love confession. you know why? because it is.

let’s look at this objectively.

it starts with sasuke begging naruto to tell him why, why he continues to do so much for sasuke’s sake, why he was willing to die with him, why he was willing to be maimed for him, why he wouldn’t give up on him, despite having every right to. even when everyone else did.

this question isn’t new, either. it’s not something naruto hasn’t answered before. sasuke asked him why he wouldn’t give up in vote1 & naruto told him he was one of his most precious bonds. he asked him again in the 5 kage summit arc & naruto told him it was because they were friends. sasuke has enough answers, but he asks again. why? because he’s not satisfied with the answer naruto’s given him. because he’s looking for more.

naruto doesn’t disappoint, giving him the same ‘we’re friends’ response. sasuke is not having it. he gets visibly angry, clearly displeased with the answer. he presses forward & asks naruto for more, asks him to put a meaning to the supposed feeling of ‘friendship’ naruto keeps pushing on him. why? because what he feels for naruto, and what he believes naruto feels for him, is more than friendship. because he needs to know that naruto feels the same way for him that he does for naruto.

so naruto describes the feelings he has for sasuke in words. he tells him that he hurts when sasuke hurts. that he feels his pain too.

i will make a point of bringing up the fact that this ‘i hurt when you do’ is used countless times in media & literature to represent love—especially and predominantly romantic love. and the kicker of this is that this is what makes sasuke react.

sasuke’s expression here is probably one of the most emotion filled expressions of him in the manga. he’s shocked by naruto’s admission, by naruto’s confession. this is a huge deal for him.

this is more than friendship to him.

then we get to see into sasuke’s thoughts about naruto, for the first time in the entirety of the series.

this is sasuke’s confession.

sasuke explains everything he thought of naruto, using phrases like ‘seeing you made me feel warm and fuzzy’, implying things like ‘loving you made me feel weak’.

and sasuke finishes it all with the fact that he hurt when naruto hurt. all along, he’s felt pain when naruto’s in pain. all along, he has reciprocated naruto’s feelings to a tee.

all along, he’s loved naruto back just as much as naruto loved him.

once you realize this, it is easier to understand his reaction to naruto telling him he felt his pain. sasuke reacted like that because he realized that his love was reciprocated, that this feeling of ‘friendship’ that naruto kept going on about was the same thing that sasuke felt all this time. and that it was never friendship at all.

it was love.

then sasuke accepts defeat. accepts that he’s lost. but this acceptance is more than just understanding he’s lost a battle.

sasuke is accepting naruto’s feelings for him he’s accepting his own feelings for naruto. he’s accepting that he never could kill naruto and he never would be able to, not now that he knows that he loves him. not now that he understands the distances naruto would go to for him and why.

sasuke brings it up once more, a few moments later. naruto tells him he knows he won’t try to go rogue again, and sasuke asks him how he can be so sure. to me, it seems like a final effort to really prove to himself that naruto loves him.

and naruto does.

he tells him not to make him repeat himself. he tells him that he knows he won’t because he loves sasuke, and sasuke loves him in turn. because they share each other’s pain and there’s no question about that anymore.

he tells him ‘you won’t hurt me again, now that you know how i feel, now that you’ve seen my heart, now that i’ve seen yours, you won’t hurt me again.’

and sasuke cries tears of joy. because, even after everything, naruto loves him and naruto trusts him.

and the chapter ends with a panel of naruto and sasuke, lying on their backs, with the blood between their arms making it look as if they are holding hands.

they are finally together, exactly where they’re supposed to be.

i don’t know how anyone could read this and not see how it’s love.

i’m so here for naruto finding out sasuke gets panic attacks and has nightmares and naruto tries to genuinely help him and be his source of support and understanding

i’m so here for sasuke getting used to narutos warmth around him

i’m so here for naruto and sasuke starting to share a bed because sasuke can fall asleep better like this (also because narutos presence soothes him and he’s warm)

i’m so here for sasuke asking naruto “how’s the arm?” when they wake up or do anything physically draining

i’m so here for naruto blushing when sasuke smiles at him

im so here for them bickering in the middle of the night because narutos occupying the entire blanket for himself again

i’m so here for naruto going “well why don’t you just go get your own dumb blanket!” and sasuke makes up some shitty excuse when he actually thinks ‘because it wouldn’t smell of you’

i’m so here for sasuke not flinching anymore when naruto touches his face to get his hair out of his vision when he’s cooking

Things that Keep Me Up At Night About SasuNaru

Naruto and Sasuke KISSED in their first chapter together.

We see Sasuke’s Sharingan for the first time when he reawakened it because he thought Naruto was going to die.

Sasuke’s body “moves on it’s own” to save Naruto.

Naruto entered Tailed Beast Mode for the first time because he thought Sasuke DIED.

Sasuke’s final thoughts before he “died” were all centered around Naruto which even included their first kiss.

Hurting Sasuke or HECK EVEN MENTIONING Sasuke in a bad light is a surefire way to trigger Naruto.

Naruto and Sasuke were all BLUSHY AND AVOIDING each other’s glances after wave country.

Sasuke’s first thought upon learning that Itachi is back in Konoha is to SAVE NARUTO.

UPDATE [June 25, 2020]

Naruto and Sasuke have canonically watched each other since they were children and have felt a kinship with one another long before they became teammates.

SASUKE FED NARUTO EVEN THOUGH THE CONSEQUENCE WAS BEING SENT BACK TO THE ACADEMY which can ultimately set him back on his goal of killing Itachi.

Naruto and Sasuke know each others hearts like no one else in the entire series.

Naruto DOES NOT NEED A GENJUTSU to know that Sasuke is someone who he treasures. HECK! NARUTO EVEN BROADCASTED HIS ENTIRE INNER THOUGHTS ON SASUKE TO ALL THE NINJAS IN THE 4TH SHINOBI WAR VIA INO.

Sasuke only thought of going back to Konoha during his redemption journey because he read a letter from NARUTO and ALL OF NARUTO’S MESSY HANDWRITTING. I’m sobbing!!!

The only time we see Sasuke cry and laugh in happiness as well as feel content was when he was literally BLEEDING OUT TO DEATH besides NARUTO.

NARUTO when faced with the choice of either letting Sasuke kill everyone in Konoha or killing Sasuke CHOSE TO DIE WITH SASUKE. THIS BOY WOULD DIE FOR SASUKE BECAUSE WHO THE HECK CARES ABOUT RETURNING TO KONOHA AND BEING HOKAGE IF HE LOSES SASUKE?!

Naruto is WILLING TO BE BEATEN UP, CRY, AND GROVEL just to save Sasuke’s life. HE IS WILLING TO LOOK WEAK AND PATHETIC IN FRONT OF THE FREAKING RAIKAGE FOR SASUKE.

Itachi himself entrusted Sasuke to Naruto. NARUTO HAS ITACHI’S BLESSING TO BE THE ONE FOR SASUKE.

Sasuke is the only “friend” of Naruto who has ever met Naruto’s mother. SASUKE HAS KUSHINA’S BLESSING TO BE WITH NARUTO.
