The Space Marines 40k Games are good...mostly.

I think my favorite character from the games has to be Leandros simply due to the fact his character is 'complex' but also the writing in the games kind of screws over characters also. I won't go into great depth as to why though because I am just making this post to mention my misgivings in regards to a certain thing relating to these two games...

The Writing/Background Lore

Now I honestly find the writing in these games to be mid at best and sometimes having poor executions on certain plot points at worst. My biggest hangup is the writing favoring/disfavoring of Titus and how it leaves characters like Leandros, deservedly in canon and outside the world, hated on. Now despite the fact in Space Marine 1 Leandros is portrayed as a Puritan who follows the Codex Astartes to a T but by the end of the game betrays Titus due to suspecting him of being Warp-tainted and reports him to Inquisitor Thrax, who will hold Titus as a prisoner to be continuously tortured and mind-probed for a century before being released by Deathwatch personnel once Inquisitor Thrax is put down due to being possessed by a daemon by the Grey Knights. Now I understand that there will be certain inquisitors in the Inquisition that will get into trouble, cause misfortune to their allies or use their authority irresponsibly within the Imperium but I absolutely hate these recent trends within canon of villain-batting Inquisitors into certain situations where they are or had lead to the cause and effect of said situation. Anyways I feel the whole 'keeping Titus prisoner by a grudge-bearing Inquisitor' angsty plotline to be a childish addition to Titus's side story that didn't need to be added to his background because again it adds a certain distain to Leandros's actions within the world.

Now I'm not trying to say that I'm a better writer then the ones who made the games but I feel like the storyline for certain characters could have been done better and I at least thought of one alternative to the canon one now.

One, don't have Leandros sell out Titus to the Inquisition but instead once they get back to an Ultramarine stronghold have Titus be examined by a Librarian and be cleared of taint but Leandros is still very distrustful of Titus's condition and requests' to be transferred to another company to which Titus grants.

Two, let rumors circle about in the Ultramarine ranks over what happened on Forge World Graia and Titus's deeds there. Let there be a slow but growing quiet response similar to Leandros's reaction to Titus's strange resistance to warp taint.

Three, let a couple of years pass after the events of Graia then put Titus into a another campaign where half of his 2nd Company ends up dead but also once again brings into question why Titus is once again resistant to the Warp as he was on Graia. While once again cleared of Chaos taint by the Librarians Titus's situation prompts other Ultramarines to become distrustful and weary of Titus and some want him to be removed from his Captaincy position. Feeling a mix of betrayal/anger over the reactions he's getting from his Chapter and sensing a impending schism should he remain; Titus asks Chapter Master Marneus Calgar to send him into Deathwatch so that things can calm down within the Chapter for a while to which Calgar reluctantly agrees.

Four, once in the Deathwatch company Titus actually comes to like working with various Astartes members from different chapters and finds it a breath of fresh air unlike members within his Chapter who worship the Codex Astartes to the fullest extent. Despite somewhat receiving numerous calls from his Chapter Master to come back to the Ultramarines due to urgent matters, Titus chooses of his own volition to stay within Deathwatch and does so for a century in service to the Imperium.

Five, everything almost pretty much happens the same way in the game as it does here; with Titus learning to trust and be open with his Brothers once again and vice versa with Gadriel, Chairon and others members of the Chapter.

Space Marine 2 is a great game with shooter & fighter elements to it but it kind of falls short when making relevant story/lore scenes for it's characters.

It's Monday.

It's Monday.

Marine Meat Monday.

And for all the new fans, who have joined the fandom recently because of Space Marine 2 - here's Imurah for you.

I made him Pyrae, because he's throwing Warpfire and has neither shown any particular insight into possible futures nor any desire to hit his opponents in melee or twisting their insides to the outside.

But I am not a real Thousand Sons expert, so that's absolutely open for discussion.

(I am using this angle way too much. But I just love it! Like, hey giant guy, down here!)
