I’ve written a short story about a distopian city to raise awareness for the EARN IT Act. Please read until the end, it’s very important.
Imagine you live in a country surrounded by a wall. The wall is there to protect people from rabid animals. Sometimes animals make it over the wall and hurt people, but the ones that survive can be nursed back to health. The leaders of your city don’t like the wall. They want to kill the animals outside the wall, but to do that, they would need to get rid of the wall.
They decide to ban people from talking about the animals, and pretend they aren’t there. People aren’t allowed to tell people they or anyone else got hurt by an animal. They burn all pictures of the animals, and don’t let people draw them. Then, to make sure there are no animals, they replace the walls of the citizen’s houses with glass, that can easily be broken by most animals. Finally, they break a big hole in the wall. They make the hole so they can shoot the animals as they come in. But animals still hurt people. And even worse, the hole they made in the wall is so big, that animals are hurting people all over the walled country.
Sometimes there are people who want to talk about the animals and how they’re hurting people. Those people are slapped, because they aren’t allowed to talk about the animals. Sometimes even, there are people who were dragged outside the wall by animals. Sometimes they return, and when they do, they’re sent to be nursed and get slapped if they talk about what happened to them. The leaders pretend not to notice, but some of the people living in the city are animals too. They dress up in human clothes and do human things, but they’re animals. In the entire city there are very few animals that don’t hurt people, if any. You don’t know how many people are animals because the leaders don’t talk about them, because they’re animals.
There are even a few leaders that are animals, everyone knows it, but if they say it they get slapped, because they are animals, and they aren’t allowed to talk about the animals. The leaders are also old and don’t have very good hearing, so they think that all talk about ears is about animals, even though humans have ears. People who talk about ears are slapped, and people who make money by using their ears are slapped extra hard, because they aren’t allowed to talk about ears because animals have ears.
The only people allowed to talk about animals are the leaders. The leaders don’t like some people, because if you squint, really squint, so hard you can barely see at all, they kind of look a little bit like animals. They ignore the animals in human clothes and send the people who don’t actually look like animals outside the wall. If they come back in, they get sent back out if they say anything about being sent outside the wall because of the part of them that doesn’t really make them look like an animal, they are slapped and sent outside the wall again.
The animals love to eat babies. There are some animals that don’t eat babies, but a lot of them eat babies. Sometimes they even try to eat kids and teenagers, and if those kids or teenagers say that they don’t like that they were almost eaten by the animals, the leaders slap them and say “We made the hole in the wall so we could shoot the animals. We shoot the animals because they eat babies and kids and teenagers. Do not talk about the babies and kids and teenagers that the animals eat, because now that we can shoot the animals less babies and kids and teenagers get eaten.” But those leaders are lying.
Long before the leaders broke a hole in the wall, even before there was a wall, almost everyone in the city was mostly animal, sometimes animals in human clothes. Many people were slapped by the mostly animal people because if you close your eyes they look like animals, even though the people slapping them were animals. Sometimes they were shot because if you close your eyes they look like animals, and the leaders, most of whom were mostly animal, said “Shoot the people that look like animals.” Sometimes other people would take the people who don’t act look like animals and tie them up and make them do chores that hurt them. Some of them were able to hide that part of themselves that make them look like animals if you close your eyes, but some people couldn’t hide it, because they had a different part that made them look like an animal if you close your eyes. Some people had many parts that are completely normal for a human to have, but made them look like an animal if you close your eyes.
The city has guards, and back then the guards didn’t like the people who look like animals if you close your eyes, because the guards were mostly animal. They were the ones who shot the people who didn’t actually look like animals, because they looked like animals when their eyes were closed. Eventually the people who looked like animals if you closed your eyes decided they didn’t want to be hurt anymore, so they told the guards they aren’t animals, and when the guards shot at them they fought back. There started to be people that are okay with these people with these parts. Once enough people thought that the leaders said “Do not shoot the people who look like animals if you close your eyes.” And they slapped those people a little less.
You remember right before the wall was broken. Many animals still didn’t like the people who look like animals if you close your eyes, even though the animals are really animals. They did not care, because they are animals, and didn’t really know what animals are. Those animals hurt or tried to hurt the people they didn’t like. Sometimes the guards shot the animals attacking the people the animals didn’t like, but usually they ignored the people getting hurt by animals. Sometimes animals in human clothes hurt the people they didn’t like, and the guards are usually not paying attention. Some of the guards were animals hurting people who they didn’t like, and sometimes they were sent outside the wall, but they were usually let back in because some of the leaders were animals. That was when the leaders started complaining that the animals coming over the wall sometimes ate babies, and they wanted to shoot the animals outside the wall, and not just the ones inside.
For a long time, you remember, there had been groups of people who loudly said “We don’t like that the animals are eating babies,” because they were allowed to talk about the animals. The leaders ignored them, and continued to shoot some of the animals that made it over the wall while more babies were eaten. The loud people wanted watchtowers so it would be easier to shoot the animals. Eventually the leaders said yes, but the towers were only for shooting animals inside the wall. The loud people got louder, saying “The towers help but babies are still being eaten. Please, make more watchtowers to stop babies from being eaten.” The leaders ignored them, pretending they didn’t have enough money for more watchtowers, while they spend that money giving their friends bigger and bigger things. The loud people got their own money, and asked over and over again to use it to build more watchtowers. The leaders said no.
Now the wall is broken because the leaders wanted to stop the babies from being eaten. Now even more babies are being eaten. Most people who look like an animal if you close your eyes try to hide it to stay safe from the animals, but their walls are made of glass. If they can’t hide it, an animal might break their walls and hurt them. People are being slapped if they say they’re one of those people, and then the animals see it and can get them. The leaders still say “Do not shoot the people who look like animals if your eyes are closed,” but the animals still hurt them, leaders and guards still slap them and shoot them.
Now change how you’re imagining the country with the broken wall. Change the country into the planet. Change the cities into countries, yours the United States (it doesn’t actually matter if you live there). Change the leaders to the US Government, the guards to the police, the glass houses to your online spaces, talking about ears and making money from listening to talking about adult content, s*x, and s*x work. Change the slaps to censors. Change the people who look like animals if you close your eyes to LGBTQ people, people of colour, and other minorities. Change the animals to hackers and pedophiles and homophobic or transphobic or racist or bigoted people. And finally, change the wall around the world to encryption, the thing that is responsible for almost all safety on the internet. If the EARN IT Act gets passed, it doesn’t just hurt the city, but everywhere in the walled country there will be more animals who eat babies and kids and teenagers hurting people because now there’s a hole in the wall, and animals that find the hole go inside and break whoever’s glass walls they want.
I’m an asexual sapphic teenager, and ever since I realized that I’ve been fantasizing of dating an amazing girl, becoming her wife, and adopting a kid. If this bill passes it could take all of that out of the picture. NCOSE, the largest backer of the Act, is very anti-LGBT and wants all talk about s*x and “adult content” wiped from the internet, and if the act passes I could be found and murdered by someone homophobic. I could be assaulted by a p@dophile who finds me, or someone who finds me and decides that even though I’m a kid, I need to know what it’s like before I “decide” I’m asexual. My best friend could be killed for being agender. My online friends could be killed for being trans or gay or bi. And worst of all, if we dare talk about how we look like animals if you close your eyes we would be censored.
I want to say “I’m gay and I want to live” without that simultaneously jeopardizing my life and being silenced. I want my friends to tell me “I’m trans and I want to live,” and “I’m gay too, I want to live too,” and I want to be able to talk about it. Heck, I would sign my real name on this story if I didn’t know it could get me doxxed in a few short days or weeks or months. If this bill passes, it’s the end of free speech, privacy, and endless lives. There are people who rely on SW to survive, and if any mention of them is erased the second it’s said, they CAN’T survive. The main selling point of the bill is “Removing encryption allows us to censor all adult content or sexual mention so that kids aren’t exposed to it or hurt by p@dophiles online.” What it actually does is put them even more at risk, by giving hackers access to information like where they live. P@dos and kidnappers and murderers will hurt who knows how many more kids than they already do if we allow them to remove internet security. If the bill passes it will be almost impossible to protest, because we won’t be allowed to talk about the animals.
Don’t pass the EARN IT Act, don’t break the wall, don’t let the animals kill us.
