even the monsters under the bed are afraid of what is above it
i am terrified of people with no faces. they are watching me.
they are not real. i know that. that does not prevent me from seeing them hiding in the closet and underneath my bed, empty bodies with no faces.
i am irrational and so is this fear. this feeling of people watching you who you know are not there and don’t exist especially when you begin to doubt your own existence.
or, even scarier, the world’s existence.
what if it’s just a matter of perception and if you look the wrong way (or just right) everything goes…

that is why i don’t investigate the nameless, shapeless creatures on the fringes of my vision, i tell myself.
not because i am terrified of them because i am terrified for them. if i look too closely they might disappear- i will have ended their (non) existence i only hope they would do the same for me.
it may be that they are as terrified of me as i of them with my face and worn down features.
they watch me. i cover my face with my hands and peek out through my fingers. i watch them back.
we share the same (non)existence and the possibility of a closet to hide in.
