Three Variations Of A Wolf Mask I Made For A Big Event/skit. (I Posted The Black One Before.) They Were

Three variations of a wolf mask I made for a big event/skit. (I posted the black one before.) They were for a Scylla costume, actually. As in Scylla and Charybdis from The Odyssey. Some portrayals of her are as a massive 6-headed dragon-type monster. But many portrayals have her as a normal-looking woman, but with 6 huge dog heads (on necks) emanating from somewhere below her torso. The way the costume for the event went was with one person as Scylla and a bunch of other people wearing masks surrounding her.

Since this was something I was just making, not a super perfect commission that I was being paid for, I decided to experiment a bit with these.

The first one shown was finished with an antiquing gel that I'm trying to figure out if I like. It gives a cool varied color, and accentuates irregularities and texture in the leather in a cool way. But it's super water-soluble, and needs to be sealed pretty hard. Also for this mask I decided to form the ears into more like horns, bulging out and curving back rather than being concave. I like how they look, I'm curious to see how other people like them.

The black one was the first one I made. I cut it by hand to make sure the pattern worked, and once it was done I went back and built the design again in CAD with some adjustments, so I could laser-cut the other copies. I really liked how I got the eyebrows to come out on this one. The leather on the other ones was a bit thicker, and I didn't get the eyebrows as well.

Last is the tan one, where I put some fur texture details into the edge. Also in this mask I think I got the ears done how I wanted. The inside edge curls back a bit to give it some shape, then the rest of the ear flares out concavely.

This mask was designed very quickly--the black one went from conception to hand-cut and formed within an evening. When I'm setting out to design something, especially on short notice, I often look around at the work of other craftspeople for inspiration, and to get an idea of how they've solved similar problems. I think everyone who makes things goes through similar casting-about-for-precedent stages. In most cases I seek to find a stylistic niche that nobody else is exploring, but for more straightforward designs like this sometimes you just make the thing. In this case, there was a particular piece I found when looking around that I liked so much that I want to share. Here it is. It's made by PlatyMorph, who does fantastic work. Here's her website. You should check her out. My design ended up steering closer to this precedent than to the other ones I found.Ā

Anyway, I'm putting these masks up on my Etsy page. If it seems people like them I'll put a bit more thought into finalizing the style I use on the next ones I make.
