from Juzo Itami's "Supermarket Woman" (1996)

I have been feeling much hazier this last month. Things don’t seem to be letting up. Another day, another mass shooting event in the United States. Kind of hard to get through day to day when your brain is in constant terror, but I guess that’s probably the American way.

(2015) Sweet Bean

A sincere, sweet film that has a surprising premise. I had never seen a Naomi Kawase film before so this first encounter definitely piqued my interest. Great performances by Kirin Kiki and Masatoshi Nagase. I’m always a sucker for small human dramas that tackles big societal issues done in an understated approach.

Witches of Eastwick

Dark and weird in all the best ways. The three leading ladies looked amazing through and through.

(1996) Supermarket Woman

Great film, more light hearted and weirdly straightforward compared to Tampopo or the Taxing Woman. A playful, wacky take on class, workers rights and monopolies. Can’t believe they fit a car chase scene into a movie about supermarkets.

(1996) Late Bloomers

Fun, appreciated seeing the director. Appreciate seeing films where a creative community comes together to make it happen.

Movies Watched, June 2022

Noticing that somehow it’s gotten harder for me to hit my expected 10 films a month (minimum.) Been seeing friends and going outside, among other things. Somehow my evenings get filled up with chores and activities. Maybe this is more telling of my post-COVID brain too. At the beginning of the year, I wanted to watch at least one movie a week, which would bring me up closer to 4 - 5 a month, but feeling like I should be at least a bit more ambitious.

(2021) The Mitchells vs The Machines

Very sad that this flew under the radar in general. Great film with a unique animation style. The premise is fine, cute nevertheless but the sensibilities feel like something that is rare in a world that is dominated by Disney and Pixar.

(2021) Encanto

Appreciate the intimate premise. The songs are catchy but feel a little forgettable (maybe it’s just my brain?)

(2022) Dr Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Great fun and entertaining as expected. Didn’t know anything about it coming in and was thoroughly entertained. The last 10 minutes or so felt a little underwhelming, though appreciate that it wasn’t about big, choreographed battles that drag on. Sam Raimi’s touches felt truly at home in the film. Way more scary and violent than I thought?

(2022) Fire Island

Andrew Ahn is such a great director. Moments in the film are sublime, but generally wanted more of Bowen and the other characters. Wished it was less of a Joel Kim Booster vehicle. Conrad Ricamora is insanely hot.

(2022) The Bob’s Burgers Movie

It was strange seeing the series being animated so well, on the large screen. The story itself was pretty cute, mostly a longer Bob’s Burger episode with more grand musical numbers.

Movies Watched, July 2022

It’s weird that I don’t remember watching movies on the airplane on my trip to the UK. This was a blurry month, unfortunately.

(2022) Thor: Love and Thunder

It was fine, for some reason it felt like it didn’t have the same energy as Ragnarok or as funny.

(2021) Marcel the Shell with Shoes On

Beautiful and highly quotable. Just a gem. Glad I got to catch this in the movie theater.

(1953) Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

Had never seen this before. Now I know where the iconic “diamonds are a girl best friends…” scene comes from. Camp and gay as hell. Very fun.

(1999) Eyes Wide Shut

Only saw most of this, still have the last little bit to watch. I hadn’t revisited this since I saw it in film school years ago. The stilted acting and the visuals definitely felt like a spiral descent (as intended.) Need to remind myself to finish watching this soon.

Movies Watched, Aug. 2022

August was kind of confusing, frazzled and sweaty. In a funny twist, the films that I watched ended up being much hornier than my day to day life at this moment. Excited that the weather is going to cool off soon, I hope.

Is everyone ok?

(2017) Hanagatami

Feverish, horny and vibrates with feelings. Keeps you engaged even when it’s loose coherence at moments.

(2022) 3000 Years of Longing

A visually lush musing on stories and desire. This needed to be way more horny, though, considering the premise.

(1987) Dirty Dancing

Another movie I can’t believe I never watched in completion. Some parts are kind of oop, but the dancing and the bodies were pretty hot.

(1997) Romy and Michelle High School Reunion

Fell asleep the last time I tried to watch this. Still pretty funny. Love all the cast members

(2022) BODIES BODIES BODIES

Biting. Great dialogues. Loved that the scariest moments in the film are dialogue driven.

Movies Watched, Sept. to Oct. 2022

Took October as a chance to reset. Continuing to watch a lot of comedies, a few of them were really surprising. Trying to stay afloat with the absurdity of it all. Noticing that I am losing the stamina for gore and violent films that feel hollow or purely referential. We’re so close to end of the year, again. View On WordPress

Movies Watched, Nov. 2022

from "Banshees of Inisherin" by Martin McDonagh

How did we get to the end of the year already? A year that is both long and short, with a lot of changes. Lots of good movies this year!

Yentl (1983)

The details on how the film was made is amazing. Obviously, a queer story. They should remake this and make it into a proper trans / gay story. Laughed and cried. Barbra was and still is a force. Loved that it’s so horny.

Banshees of Inisherin (2022)

A good accompaniment to Parallel Mothers as different films that deal with history, conflict, trauma and how it inherently manifest in who we are. Funny and tragic, one of my favorites this year.

Tar (2022)

Great first half. Blanchett is undoubtedly great. The Philippines stuff feels really weird, even though it’s about whiteness made it feel a little too obvious that it is written by a white person. Wanted it to be a tighter film, felt too overwrought without necessarily saying enough.

Wakanda Forever (2022)

Did not expect how emotional it was going to be. The film was a lot about family and grief, which really affected me and my friend who watched it with me. Glad to have seen this with the audience over at BAM. Really appreciate a film of this scale wrestle with concepts around colonialism.

Barbarian (2022)

Shot well. Really liked how it built atmosphere and tension especially in the first half. Could’ve been much more boring, but it was funny. Took turns (narratively) in a way that kept my attention while being not overly twist-y.

Triangle of Sadness (2022)

Resonant, amazing performances. Not subtle, but the film felt timely and needed. The dialogue cuts in a way that made me gasp a lot. Great use of Life by Des’ree. Not sure what it says about me, but the film presented horrifying situations that feel strangely familiar in real life.

Movies Watched, Dec. 2022

Movies Watched, Dec. 2022

December was rather hard. But the movies that I got to watch help me get through it. Felt foggy all month as I stumble towards the end of the year. As always, being on a long flight helped me watch a lot of films.

A Very English Scandal, Season 1 (2018)

Not a movie, but since there is only three episodes it may as well have been. The airplane had advertised the wrong season since it pulled images from the second season for its thumbnails. Great performances and sharply executed by Stephen Frears and Russel T. Davies (as always.)

Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

The best in its recent generation, but they really should stop. Like, seriously just stop.

Official Competition (2021)

Smaller, darker and more searing than expected.

Bullet Train (2022)

The overall idea around luck and what brings the characters together is interesting but how the “story” is told feels kind of bad and weirdly, very dated. Joyless despite its overpacked cast.

I Love My Dad (2022)

So glad to have finally seen this. Wow. Funny, surreal, tight. Great. Captures how dizzying it can feel when you are connecting to someone online. Really enjoyed the way they showed the conversations between the characters.

Mrs Harris Goes to Paris (2022)

Great fun. The younger actors kind of ruined it for me. Their performances just couldn’t match up.

The Apartment (1960)

Great film, that still feels really modern. Risque and contemporary premise. Malcolm’s words on the premise of the film: “Choosing romanticism and uncertainty versus hypocritical, corporate, male structures”

Movies Watched, Jan.2023

Happy New Year! The world hasn’t ended yet, even though it keeps feeling like everything could just crumble at any moment. Maybe that’s just how it feels all the time, though. Glad that I started the first month pretty strongly with movies. Obviously the holidays helped, but it feels like there are a lot of good films this year too.

You People (2023)

Great cringey ride. Seymour Dreyfus taps her horrifying self, and the leads are sweet.

The Fablemans (2023)

Very melodramatic tone. I enjoyed the Cinematography, felt and looked different than most contemporary movies. Dano and Williams had such good performances.

Love on Delivery (1994)

A classic Stephen Chow joint. Absurd, increasing stakes and become more surreal as the film goes on. A cute reminder that we haven’t really seen movies with similar comedic sensibilities in a while.

M3GAN (2023)

Quick, funny and the rightful heir to the insane murder doll genre. Smarter than the last Chucky remake. Scary and absurd. M3GAN’s dialogue is sharp. Also a secret queer story 🥲

Turn Every Page - The Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb (2023)

Learned a lot and was very pleasant and funny. Everyone had daddy issues.

Taking of Pelham 1, 2, 3 (1974)

Funny and campy, the race jokes feel like it didn’t pay off. Very dated and uncomfortable. Glad I’ve finally seen this version.

The Glass Onion (2022)

Great romp with a throwback to classical structure. Not feeling the ending, though.

The Menu (2022)

Great acting but the second half is kind of a let down. The premise was exciting but I think it got in its on way. It was less than what I desired, but probably more than I deserve.
