Day 8 is a slow-moving mermaid who allows coral to grow on her body. Okay so... there is a story behind this mess. I realised my felt tip pens blend very well with water and I wanted to try painting with them, but they’re all very bright, saturated colours so I needed a brightly coloured mermaid, and all I could think of was coral, and I ended up with something MUCH too complicated to colour with a medium I’ve never tried before. Unfortunately I only realised my error about halfway through so I just had to finish it. That’s why the colouring is... not the best. Hey ho, this is how we learn. -____- (The coralmaid might show up again later, since I feel like I let her down a bit.)
Day 11 of Mermay! Do you recognise the kind of fish she is? I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about one of the most beautiful creatures in God’s creation: the hagfish. Here are some choice quotes on the wonderful characteristics of the hagfish: They are the only known living animals that have a skull but no vertebral column The skin is naked and covers the body like a loosely fitting sock
Instead of vertically articulating jaws they have a pair of horizontally moving structures with tooth-like projections for pulling off food
Its skin is only attached to the body along the center ridge of the back and at the slime glands, and is filled with close to a third of the body's blood volume, giving the impression of a blood-filled sack When captured and held, e.g., by the tail, they secrete the microfibrous mucus, which expands into up to 20 litres (5¼ US gallons) of sticky, gelatinous material when combined with water If they remain captured, they can tie themselves in an overhand knot, which works its way from the head to the tail of the animal, scraping off the slime as it goes and freeing them from their captor Seriously hagfish are one of my favourite animals and I want you all to love them as much as I do. Please take a moment to appreciate hagfish today.
Day 13 is based on a cartoon character, can you guess which one? This is another one using water-soluble felt tips, I think I’m starting to get the hang of it! On my instagram there’s a photo of how it looks before the water: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxZwKlIlR4n/
I forgot to post my mermaids! NOOO! For day 14 I asked Sammy what I should draw, and she said Gumball to match Darwin from the day before. I didn’t have any better ideas so here he is! He’s a catfish, of course. I think I’m getting somewhere with the water-and-felt-tips combination, but I haven’t worked out how to get muted colours yet.
