Felt Tips - Tumblr Posts

I’m not dead! And I’m back with a new Pocket Witch - this is Sammy’s new Pocket Witch, Gravity! Sammy has drawn a lot of pictures for me recently, so in return I offered her a Pocket Witch of her own. I originally meant to do just the portrait, but things got out of hand and Gravity demanded a two-page comic to introduce herself, she was very excited to meet Sammy! (She’s very excited about everything.) The spot colour on these is actually done in neon ink which naturally doesn’t show up properly in scans, so I’ll post some photos later showing the neons on the original pages.

Having a little inktober warm-up to test some new pens I got since last year. Inktober is my favourite art challenge of the year! Nettle and Spider dominated it last year, but we’ll see who becomes the favourite this time.

Inktober 2017 : Day 4 - fineliners and felt tip pen
Here’s someone we don’t see often (because he’s too hard for me to get on-model), Franz! Prompted by my nose being in bloody tatters after four days of this cold.

Inktober 2017: Day 6 - fineliners and felt tip pen
Turning the pages for Spider is by far the hardest part of this exercise. Nettle is trying to practice moving only the things she wants to move, but I don’t think she’ll ever be able to use her powers without some of her hair waving around.
I realised last year that I’ve drawn a variation on this theme for every Inktober since 2014, so now I want to keep going and see which I run out of first, different ink methods or ideas.

Inktober 2017 : Day 21 - fineliner and felt tip Eventually the school agreed that Nettle should just sit out of P.E. lessons.

Here are some of the demonic features Leilus can use as his ‘I am a demon’ warning sign. The rule is it has to be something that will be immediately recognised as non-human, so it can vary according to cultural norms. He used to be able to use his black fingernails, but these days they just look like acrylics so they don’t count any more. Most demons choose something they can hide, like claws that they can hide under gloves, or hooves that can be hidden inside shoes. Leilus can just keep his long, disgusting tongue inside his mouth, so it’s by far the best option. The stereotypical spaded tail is probably the worst.

Today on ‘I love spot colour and anime’, my two favourite pro heroes from My Hero Academia, Eraser Head and Present Mic. (Previously on ‘I love spot colour and anime’ - Hōzuki no Reitetsu)

Inktober 2018 : Day 12 - fountain pentel and felt tip pen Given how often I draw it you could be forgiven for thinking that Franz spends most of his life maiming people with his bare hands, but I’m actually drawing the same scene over and over. I think I’m starting to get the hang of the fountain pentel, which I have affectionately nicknamed ‘the splatter pen’. There’s something nice about the scrappy lines it makes.

Inktober 2018 : Day 23 - fineliners and felt tip pen I usually try to avoid using the same medium two days in a row, but yesterday’s fineliners were plastic nibs and these are normal fibre nibs, so it’s okay, right?

Day 8 is a slow-moving mermaid who allows coral to grow on her body. Okay so... there is a story behind this mess. I realised my felt tip pens blend very well with water and I wanted to try painting with them, but they’re all very bright, saturated colours so I needed a brightly coloured mermaid, and all I could think of was coral, and I ended up with something MUCH too complicated to colour with a medium I’ve never tried before. Unfortunately I only realised my error about halfway through so I just had to finish it. That’s why the colouring is... not the best. Hey ho, this is how we learn. -____- (The coralmaid might show up again later, since I feel like I let her down a bit.)

Day 13 is based on a cartoon character, can you guess which one? This is another one using water-soluble felt tips, I think I’m starting to get the hang of it! On my instagram there’s a photo of how it looks before the water: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxZwKlIlR4n/

I forgot to post my mermaids! NOOO! For day 14 I asked Sammy what I should draw, and she said Gumball to match Darwin from the day before. I didn’t have any better ideas so here he is! He’s a catfish, of course. I think I’m getting somewhere with the water-and-felt-tips combination, but I haven’t worked out how to get muted colours yet.

Day 20 is a merman! One of the prompt lists had ‘merman’ for today, so I turned one of my male characters into a merm. (I haven’t been using prompts in general, but I look at the lists if I’m stuck for ideas.) I wasn’t sure about the spot colour so I scanned it before colouring as well. I’m still not sure which one looks better.

His whispers blend right in with your own thoughts, until you can’t tell the difference.

Inktober 2019: day 27 - fineliners and grey pens
I was handing out minicomics featuring Patience at MCM, so I thought she could join in Inktober too! She’s the last character I can think of for the ‘girls looking straight ahead’ set, so I’ll have to come up with something else to do on busy days next year.
