Amuse me.
Milli had promised him Tia would be back from the forget soon. That was nearly an hour ago. She felt bad about Markus sitting there, alone with her in the shop. Especially since she’d spent most of the time hip-deep in an order of bola rifles that needed to be finished by morning. Hence why she hadn’t just sent for Tia immediately. The woman’s work was part of a constant order that helped keep Milli in business.
But she’d put together all the rifles she had parts for right now. So she went over and sat down beside him with a little flop. “I think my cat’s a murderer,” she said conversationally.
"What…?" Markus peered at her as if she’d said something odd.
Milli just nodded. “I think Widget’s killing people. He stalks them when they come into the shop, gets a feel for them. Then when they come back for their orders, he follows them out. I’ve stopped trying to keep him inside anymore,” she explained, “Just too much trouble. But then he comes back later, licking his claws. And I never see them again. Well, most of them.” She nodded with certainty. “So he’s a murderer.”
The laugh was slow to build, rising from deep within his belly and tumbling past his lips like an avalanche. “I think you’ve been drinking your lubricant, Milli. I can almost guarantee you the cat is not out killing people.”
Milli smiled, pleased that she’d been able to win a laugh from the man. She shrugged. “Well if you say so. But if you start finding bodies with little teeth and claw marks all over them…” With a wide grin, she said, “Go get Tia. She’s done all she can for tonight. You two need some time together.”
She was pushing him out the door before he could do more than sputter. As she turned back to her work, a pair of yellow-green eyes peered out from under the guncase. Widget flexed his claws. Perhaps a meal for another day.
Keeping Watch
On swift paws he dodged boots and cart wheels, keeping up with Quiet Mews. He’d shadowed her home the night before after her encounter with one of her mates. And the mate had shadowed her, too. Widget wasn’t sure why he didn’t just walk with her like he usually did. But his pet was nothing if not unpredictable.
Now she was intently making her way through the throng of talls-without-tails and talls-with-tails and not heading toward home or her nest. And so it fell to him to protect Quiet Mews, because that’s what a good owner did.
He’d named her Quiet Mews early on because she was generally so soft when she made the strange trills common to her kind. And it wasn’t like she had the decency to speak and tell him her name. But he’d been left in her home to take care of her and he would be dutiful in that. Even if she never ate the birds and mice he left at her feet, urging her to gain strength.
She stopped at a place and scratched at the door. It was opened by another female, one he’d met many times before. Quiet Mews and Stompy Boots trilled at one another and there was some exchange of affection. The pair looked so alike, Widget had long ago decided they must be siblings. Or if not littermates, then at least children of the same parents.
When Stompy Boots opened the door wider, Widget took the invitation and darted inside. He needed to make sure the place was safe for Quiet Mews. It was indeed a nice place. Warm fire, plenty of space, sleeping platforms like Quiet Mews preferred (though he knew she’d never tell anyone she hated waking up at her bench, but he’d seen her frown all too often when she did). Widget went back to the main room and told her he approved, but as usual she just responded with a trill. One day, he would teach her to speak.
He twined around her legs a few times and when she sat down she pulled him into her lap. Widget preferred this position. He could keep watch on his pet. And really, it didn’t hurt that she tended to stroke him while he did so.
Oh, right there. Yes.
He knows he's not the largest cat, he's seen the talls-with-tails, but he also knows that size doesn't matter. Ingenuity, speed, and surprise can overpower a superior foe.

The Widget app is fun, yes you can have little plants and pets that you can take care of and all, but I'm more in it for the out of context, dumb doodles I get to send my friend that she has yet to notice and also having them greet me on my home screen every time I open my phone like this little Jupe here. :)
