I never really thought so many people would’ve had such ... strong opinions regarding my post on the Fate Winx designs. Regardless of how you stand on the matter I deeply, deeply appreciate the feedback and reblogs I’ve received from people, as an artist I’m just so giddy over all this attention

Obviously I have a bias as an artist who leans towards animation and 2D so people who work more in the line of fashion would have a better grasp on how to make the Winx girl’s fashion work in the context of the show’s tone, I just thought putting Bloom in nothing but red was a unoriginal and insecure way of the show’s crew saying “look, SHE CONTROLS FIRE!” as if her hair wasn’t an obvious visual cue

I hope this clears up some misconceptions that I didn’t go deep on in the former. As mentioned I hope I can do the other girls and go more in depth regarding the original designs (cause oh boy, they’re really 2000s) but real life has it that I got uni work today, so while we’re here:

My original project (it’s gonna be a rough animatic so don’t expect something really polished here) if you wanna complain about MY design skills

I should also point out I only seen the trailer and I don’t have plans to actually watch this series

Winx Ramble

I don’t consider myself an aggressive hater of things. 

BUT. 

That’s right you heard a but. The Winx Fate series is one of the things I’m aggressively against. The decision to whitewash two beloved characters and also exclude Tecna and Flora from the narrative doesn’t sit right with me. Winx is a major part of my childhood and seeing the original show I love be treated like this is painful for me. Winx is wild and beautiful and it wears its magical girl tropes and campiness like a badge of honour. 

If you’re able to stomach the changes and enjoy the Fate series, cheers to you. I’m glad you’re able to enjoy the show despite its very problematic flaws. I can’t take the whitewashing or its changes to make the series more ‘adult’. 

There’s been one thing helping me process my feelings of anger towards the series. It’s the creatives of this fandom. It’s all the artists putting out redesigns and potential concepts made out love and effort to revamp our girls. 

So instead of clogging up my pores screaming at the Fate series, I wanna give a rec list to the beautiful fan content made that’s been helping me with this. 

These redesign character line-ups by @pinkadillydoo. I love the distinct body shapes and diversity here and the colour palette bursts with vibrancy and life. 

All of @emsartwork redesign work. They’re really imaginative when it comes to the design of clothing for transformations and it all stays in line with the aesthetic of Winx. I really recommend giving her a follow if u wanna see more content like.  

This Tecna redesign by @killin-kel. This whole design is a win and more respect than Tecna ever got from the Fate series. 

This. Just this. by @phaica-art. My girl Stella was done so beautiful and I love her so much. 

And last, but not least, Just Us Fairies by @princeivy-storybook. The art is fantastic, the panelling is masterful, the characters all build to interesting concepts that can be explored, and there’s more diversity here than what Fate gives you. Please. Read this series and share this around. The creator deserves a lot more recognition and love.
