Writing With Adhd - Tumblr Posts
Does anybody have any writing tips for adhd writers?
I struggle with writing consistently. I often forget things exist if I don't see them. So I have taken to leaving the document for the fanfics I want to work on open and minimized. Then every time I feel like writing I pull one up and write until I hit a stopping point. This is going well and I don't know why I haven't done this before.
This case fic is the hardest to write because I know I should have an idea of where it is going. It makes logical sense to have an end point and work backward to the fill in how the plot makes that happen. But that isn't the way writing works for me.
I started this case fic because I had an image in my mind. A terrible, weird, horrific image. And that is what the story leads with. And now I am like, okay, but who is behind it? Where does one start? How do I write this?
I am just as clueless as the characters and I want to do justice to this story, but I don't know if I will. It is a lot of emotions for a fic that started with: Someone is killing people who look like Wei Wuxian....
I would like my ADHD to let me work on something for more than 5 minutes at a time today, thanks. I have alternated through all 3 of my prompts for Au Roulette, working on the Sophie!Hua Cheng art, and several other fics in between doing laundry and clean my house. I cannot focus today. And even doing all this there is this layer of bored tiredness that has a stranglehold on me. I can't even focus on reading today.
One down, time to see if I can get the other two cleaned up and posted before the cut off. This month has been a wild ride.
AU Roulette Challenge 2024
What is AU Roulette? A casual fic-writing challenge encouraging authors to play around with different types of alternate universe stories, which will be randomly assigned to each participant regardless of the fandom they sign up with. The goal of the challenge is to encourage creativity and get authors to write fics with premises they might not otherwise have considered, with varying difficulty levels of participation for writers of all experience levels.
How does it work? Writers will be able to sign up from now through June with a fandom of their choice. At the start of July, each participant will be assigned three AUs from a masterlist using a random number generator. Each author will then have the choice of completing the challenge one, two, or all three of the AUs. Any fic exceeding a 500-word minimum will be considered a completion, so long as it employs the AU premise. The fic-writing period of the challenge will run for a month. Fics can be posted at any point during this time, and authors will have the option of having them added to an Ao3 collection for the challenge if they desire. They can also be posted to tumblr using the tag #AU Roulette 2024
What kind of AUs will be included in the challenge? The AU Roulette challenge will focus largely on popular, staple AU types with broad applicability to any fandom or relationship type. For example, a possible result might be something like a Time Travel AU (encompassing all the possible subsets, such as fix-it time travel, time loops, or other tropes under the same umbrella), but more restrictive AU types like a Soulmate AU that make assumptions about the author’s interpretation of character relationships in canon have been intentionally kept off the AU masterlist. The official list of AUs will be kept under wraps until assignments are given, but will have over 30 different prompts to ensure authors receive a good variety of options, and if you have suggestions or concerns about what AUs are being included, feel free to reach out.
What if I get an AU type that doesn’t work for the canon I chose? Limited re-rolls will be allowed on a case-by-case basis. You are also encouraged to be as creative as you want with your interpretation of your assigned AUs, which may help with making them fit. The goal of this challenge is to encourage weird, creative fanfic, not to have every author who rolls the same result write cookie-cutter versions of the same types of stories. If you were to get a Coffee Shop AU, for example, there is no requirement that the coffee shop in question be a real-world 21st-century Earth Starbucks. In fact, deviating from the mold is highly encouraged. So long as you can make a case that you filled the loose premise of your AU type, you will get credit for having completed it.
Can I participate if I am not a writer? AU Roulette is a fanfic writing challenge, so official sign-ups are for those interested in writing (regardless of skill level or experience writing AUs). However, if you are interested in the challenge but not in writing fic for it, consider having a look at the #AU Roulette 2024 tag or the official AU Roulette 2024 collection on Ao3 once authors have begun posting their stories. If one of them really speaks to you, it might be a nice gesture to draw a piece of art, make a playlist, or create some other fanwork inspired by the fic and share it – in which case you would also be more than welcome to use the official tag!
(Authors are of course also welcome to do this for their or other participants’ stories, too.)
How do I sign up? Fill out this form with your email and fandom of choice.
Looking forward to seeing the AUs everyone creates this year!
Talking about my urban fantasy fic and I said Junior Quartet and now my wife and I are talking about a Barbershop Quartet AU. And I said: Okay, but who is OZZ? She said "Bass" so fast y'all.
Other parts: Baritone and organizing leader: LSZ Tenor: LJY Lead: JL (Prima Donna)
So now I guess I'm writing this someday.
The Newfangled Four - A Spoonful of Sugar (parody) [from Mary Poppins] Everything I am learning about Barbershop Quartets is going to be from this band’s parodies...
Open my browser to look something up. End up on Tumblr. Close my browser to go back to writing. Realizing that I didn't look up the thing I was meaning to look up. Opening my browser to look the thing up... end up on Tumblr.....
I am perpetually balancing between trying to write future chapters to have when I am not in a writing mood, and spam posting 6 chapters at once because they are done and why aren't I posting them!!
I just realized that I can tell when the music I am listening to isn't working for writing by how many times I check Tumblr during my writing session.
That feeling when you can't remember if anyone knows about WWX's core in your fic....

That feeling when I go to fill a prompt and they say: please novel only, no CQL and I go...

I'll do my best.
I am running into the weirdest hang-ups for this fic LOL Like... Does Huaisang call Mingjue simply ge before the Venerated Triad thing? I don't know. The Seven Seas translation just translates it to "older brother". Like there are several words for older brother. But it feels weird to write just ge for Mingjue. He is the Da-ge of my heart. XD
Best part about writing A/B/O is looking at scent profiles. I love smells. Like even weird and gross ones. Something like the vanilla and dust smell of old books, or the scent of lilacs takes me back to my youth. And perfumes are beautiful. I love petrichor. It is one of my favorite smells. So I love writing about the scent aspect. A/B/O will always be my love letter to scent.
This website is my favorite to peruse the descriptions of scents. And they tell you about perfumes with those scents.
Me putting my finger on the post button on Ao3 for the newest chapter of Carried By Our Desolation: *pause* maybe one more pass through for editing purposes.
Confessions are weird, man. But needs must.
Me going to open a fic to work on, accidentally hits new button. "No, no, nope, no... do not start a new one... nope no new. Open.... work on already existing wip... no new one...." starts typing new wip.
My wife has presented me an opportunity to write hilarious miscommunication tonight. So, I am taking a break from the Mingxian prompts I been working on to write the most ridiculously smutty-sounding fic that takes place in a community center. I'll probably have it done tomorrow or something. So.... There is that I guess?
Whose got 2 thumbs and just loaded 7k words, about half of which is smut to Ao3 and is now hunkering down? This pal!
Editing this second chapter of a fic I am working on and I am glad I am. I see 100 month celebration and I am like... There is something wrong with this but I am under caffeinated and anxious enough to take 5 minutes to figure it out. 100 month celebration is somewhere in the ten month range? I think.... lol let's try 100 day celebration instead.
My brain is mush. I have written 25000 words in the last 3 days. The drive to write is still here though... It is quite confusing.
