Zutara - Tumblr Posts

Ambassador Katara with Fire Lord Zuko being a power couple. This art is based on the Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick photoshoot for Elle Korea, 2009.

I drew some fanart based on "a secret between him and the sun", a fanfiction written by @spillthebea in AO3 for the @zkbigbang of this year.
I really loved the few chapters so far published, I cannot wait to read more! The hair cut scene was so intimate and lovely I just had to draw it!
You can find the work here!

bold of you to assume that sokka has ever eaten a salad

Kataang: *cuddling*
Sokka:
The fact that I would have imagined Zuko even if it wasn't specified đŠ
Modern Zutara fic idea
Katara notices her cat â one who was rarely ever friendly toward strangers, disappear every night. In an attempt to figure out its whereabouts, she sneaks out into the hallway of her apartment to see a handsome young man petting it.
tooth rotting fluff and romance ensue.

* visual representation of the truth hitting *
No need to add more đŤâ
Look I know people love to act like Zuko is the most dangerous, toxic, and temperamental character⌠but there is exactly one (1) male character Katara was canonically responsible for calming down from violent, destructive tantrums at risk to herself and it wasnât Zuko⌠đ¸âď¸
It's apparently Zutara's month, so it's worth remembering this gem âĽď¸â¨
7. Whatâs your favourite Zutara moment from the show?
I love all Zutara moments, because it shows development in every season. But, I would never forget how June being Zutara shipper in every appearances. This is my random thought! Very random thought!

June looked closely when Zuko showed Katara's necklace. Since she was from earth kingdom, she probably didn't know it was a betrothal necklace. But, very clear the necklace belong to a girl.
But, she was a bounty hunter, she worked for anyone who paid her, they could be from anywhere . So, there was possibility she learn about other nation cultural like betrothal necklace from Northern Water Tribe.
A prince using a (betrothal) necklace to looking a girl? (Maybe he made it for her, but she run away?) Well, the conclusion was, "What happened? Your girlfriend run off on you?"
And Zuko didn't deny it.

June was right, the necklace belong to a girl. A beautiful girl! âSo this is your girlfriend. No wonder she left, she's way too pretty for you.â
And again, Zuko didn't deny it!

June didn't know what happened after that, but the Prince Pouty came again to her and now TOGETHER with the girl. Not only that, June saw Katara wore her necklace.
What sense situation except, "I see you worked things out with your girlfriend."
This time they denied it!
But, what a reaction if there was nothing between them?
Zuko never give a f*ck before every time June teased her with Katara, why he suddenly so shy and denied it? And Katara made the same reaction as she denied her relationship with Jet! Something fishy!!

And in the very same night after someone assumed that they were together, they slept like this! Remember, Aang was missing that time, no one knows where he was or was he okay. But, look at the little smile on Katara's face! I wonder, what were they talking about before they say good night?
THIS.
(let's just ignore Haru's mustache)
I like how the Zutara fandom is actually really chill with a range of Katara ships
Jet? Haru? Why not, Katara should get to kiss hot boys. Azula? Yue? She can kiss hot princesses too. Meanwhile certain Ka/taang shippers are hellbent on denying even the possibility that Katara might have liked Haru or Zuko lmao
Put Aang with Toph and the atla universe is aligned đ
Katara could have ended up with Haru, and Zuko could have ended up with Jin, which I would have been happier with than canon Kataang and Maiko. The added irony that Zuko and Katara both flirted with people from the Earth Kingdom.

Got a kataanger blocking me for stating this, lol
you donât have to be a Zutara shipper to dislike Ka/taang
Most of my irl friends are not shippers and the word âZutaraâ does not exist in their vocabulary, but they think Ka/taang is weird. Because a prepubescent boy with a teenage girl is weird. Heâs a child. Sheâs a teenager. Anyone who stops and thinks about what they were like at twelve vs fourteen knows those were some long years.
I started getting the ick for Ka/taang in The Headband and it reached its apex in Nightmares and Daydreams. I didnât even start liking Zutara until The Southern Raiders. I liked Katara with Haru but the creators sank that ship with a strategically placed moustache
I am a ZK shipper so things like parallels and symbolism and Kataraâs development as an adult matter to me. But even without all that, I didnât like Ka/taang. Because before my analytical brain jumped in, my lizard brain said âick.â
We should appreciate more the OPs who are willing to write a little essay to explain their point in every little detail â¤ď¸ thanks for your service!
I swear 90% of anti Zutara posts are just Kat-aang fans projecting their own dislike about their canon ship onto Zutara.
Zuko brings out the worst in her? Aang refused to acknowledge her pain and grief, and constantly encouraged her to suppress any negative emotions.
Katara would be a powerless if she marred Zuko? She spent her entire adult life confined to Air Temple island, away from her tribe, rarely venturing like 20 minutes into Republic City to help people (unless you count banning blood bending, a technique with a lot of practical value, and doing nothing to enforce that ban, but that's another story).
Katara would be Zuko's trophy wife? The series ends with Aang and Katara kissing, because Katara's affection toward Aang are him being rewarded for being the Avatar.
They'd fight too much? Zuko and Katara reconcile after they fight and work together as an amazing team. Meanwhile, Katara and Aang have serious problems at the end of the series that end in explosive fights and they never get resolved.
Zutara is too physical? They hug once. Kat-aang kisses four times (two of which were non consensual, one of which was under duress), Aang checks her out multiple times in the series and fantasizes about kissing her, but they almost never have intimate conversations where Katara gets to open up, unless she is sharing her grief for his benefit.
Zutara fans only like it because Zuko is hot? Aang looks like a small child, especially when compared to Katara.
Zutara fans just like the bad boy/good girl trope? Katara is "darker" then Aang (and Kat-aang fans, apparently) want to admit. Her strong sense of justice, i.e. the thing that makes her "good," is just as rooted in anger as it is empathy.
They'd bring out the worst in each other? Aang is entitled, angry and irresponsible when it comes to Katara, and Katara is a pushover and shortsighted when it comes to Aang.
Zutara would be abusive? Aang lashes out at Katara when he gets angry or jealous, even when that jealousy comes from actors in a shitty play she had no control over.
It's a colonizer/colonized relationship? Aang has no respect for Katara's culture: he mocks her food, her beliefs, he tries to impose his cultural values on her, and post-A:tLA he rejects their waterbending child and denies their airbending access to his watertribe heritage, and Katara stays away from her people for nearly their entire relationship.
Zutara fans are delusional and deny canon? You can acknowledge something and not like it, criticize it and create fanon content that differs from it. That's not denial, that's critical thinking and creativity. But if Kat-aang fans are so in love with all aspects of canon, they are welcome to embrace at "The Ember Island Players" and "Love is a Battlefield."
Zutara would be toxic? Look at Kat-aang.
OP thank you so much for sacrificing your opposable thumb to this topic đ
What Aangâs Relationship With His Kids Tells Us About His Relationship With Katara
Bumi: âOh, boo-hoo. Must've been real hard for you, flying around the world with dad, riding elephant-koi all day.â
Tenzin: âOh, so that's what this is all about.â
Kya: âThat's what it's always been about. You think you're some savior who has to carry on dad's legacy.â
Tenzin: âWho else is going to do it?â
Kya: âHow about all of us?â
Bumi: âYeah, we're Aang's kids too.â
The whole problem with this family is, Aang didnât believe that.
Aang has a long, undeviating track record of never questioning anything he believes about the Air Nomads. Who the hell has a perfect and complete understanding of their society, government, international relations, education system, religion, morality, genetics, and reproduction at age 12? According to Aang? He does.Â
The entire lynchpin of Aangâs Book 3 arc is all about how Air Nomads are pacifists and cannot ever under any circumstances harm a life. (Weâre going to ignore the body count Aangâs already wracked up over the first two seasons for the sake of preserving his feelings because those were soulless NPCs or something.)Â
And yet Aang never questions thisâŚ

Monk Gyatsoâs bones surrounded by a pile of Fire Nation soldier bones. The picture doesnât fit Aangâs image of Air Nomad peace and harmony, so he ignores it entirely. It NEVER comes up despite its overwhelming relevance to Aangâs internal conflict and the sorts of advice he seeks from authority figures in the third season (despite Monk Gyatso being the penultimate authority figure in Aangâs life).
Another thing Aang never questions?
Thereâs no such thing as a non-airbending Air Nomad. Theyâre just all born that spiritual. And spirituality is the golden key that unlocks bending. (Because Bryke said so.)
Despite Guru Pathik not being a bender. Despite the fact that Zhao, literal spirit murderer, is one. Despite Tophâthe most un-spiritual, cynical, feet-on-the-ground-head-nowhere-near-the-clouds member of Aangâs friend groupâbeing the most powerful bender of the lot. Despite Hama being a waterbender equal to none but Katara while completely cut off from her culture and turning her back on everything we believe about water bendingâs inherent ties to community, connectedness, and love (Irohâs words). Despite Azula mastering the god-tier lightning technique BECAUSE sheâs practically dead inside and values life least of all things. Despite the fact that Princess Yue has the literal MOON SPIRIT THAT IS THE SOURCE OF ALL WATERBENDING living inside her, and yet she still somehow manages to not be a bender.
Despite the fact that Air Nomads roam all over the world, sewing their wilds oats throughout every nation, yet no airbending toddlers ever crop up in Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom preschools.Â
Despite the fact that non-monogamous societies where men have multiple partners father more children and boost the population faster than in societies that favor âattachedâ relationships, yet the all-airbending Air Nomads still somehow have the smallest population of any ethnic group in the world.Â
Despite the fact that Aangâs twin, Ty Lee, is RIGHT. THERE. with her unparalleled aura-seeing, chakra blocking spirituality and her GRAY EYES in a world where color coding is ~totally~ not a thing⌠*sigh*Â

But nope. Air Nomad parentage = airbending child. Always.
So when Katara births a child that is⌠not an airbender? Not any kind of bender at all, in fact. Thereâs only one logical conclusion (in Aangâs mind).Â
That is not Aangâs child.Â
Aang never had a problem traveling with non-airbenders before. He was non-exclusionary by nature. Katara and Toph and Zuko were welcome. Sokka and Suki were welcome. The more, the merrier, in fact. Because Aang loves nothing as much as he loves an adoring audience.

Yet Bumi never travelled with Aang.

Bumiâs as old in this picture as Aang was in the first series. He had an entire decade in which he should have been the most important thing in his parentsâ lives. His personality was already more or less formed (not completed, but the groundwork was laid) by the time Tenzin came along. Bumiâs inferiority issues began long before there were any airbending children around to siphon Aangâs attention for training purposes.Â
Aang and Katara didnât have another child until Bumi was on the verge of adolescence because Aang was convinced that Katara cheated. And Iâm guessing it took Mr. âLet Your Anger Out, And Then Let It Goâ about ten years to forgive his wife and give her the chance to get it right. (Which is at least four years longer than he gave her to forgive her motherâs murderer, in case you forgot.)
Acolyte: âSorry, I thought you were the servants.â
Bumi: âWeâre Tenzinâs brother and sister!â
Acolyte: âAvatar Aang had other children? The world is filled with more airbenders?!â
Kya: âWeâre not airbenders.â
Acolyte: âOh⌠Iâm so sorry.â
The Air Acolytesâwhose whole identity, purpose, lifestyle, and religion center around every detail of this man's life and beliefsâdidn't know Aang had more than one child.
The best case scenario here is that Aang simply pretended his older children didnât exist because he was ashamed of them and made Katara keep them shut away at all times.Â
And maybe that could have worked⌠If Aang and Katara had ever had any privacy in their relationship. But they didnât.
The Air Acolytes have been following Aang and Katara since the comics. Theyâve been there at every step of Aang and Kataraâs life together. Observing. Fangirling. Emulating. Diefying. Looking for weaknesses in the relationship because Katara was only his âfirst girlfriend.âÂ

Yet, somehow, they didnât know Aang had three children.Â
I canât imagine a way for them not to know unless Aang actively told people, âThose arenât my kids,â and let Katara bear the shame and stigma of having the world believe she was unfaithful.Â
All because Aang couldn't entertain the idea that he was wrong about some facet of a society he never understood clearly.
Kataangers love to make us feel like this argument is overused and that we lack media literacy... WHEN JET DIED FOR A BISON.
OKAY, not any bison, but certainly Appa was not the most important creature for him and his life.
Also, they love to point out that "Appa is the last link between Aang and his genocided culture"... then act like it when it comes to the guy who died saving him.
Rewatching A:tLA with my brother and we just tackled The Southern Raiders.
Something that bothered me this time that had never bothered me before was when Aang tells Katara, "You sound like Jet."
He said that to stop Katara from taking revenge, right? To make her stop and think? Doesn't anyone think that this is fucked up? Like, let's examine this.
"You sound like Jet."
Okay, which Jet?
Jet from his debut episode where he tried to destroy an entire village to get rid of some Fire Nation troops? How does that sound like Katara trying to find the one man who killed her mother?
Or is it the Jet from Lake Laogai who died trying to find Appa? Yes, he did some bad things, but he died in his attempt to help the gang find Appa. Shouldn't Aang hold Jet in higher regard for leading them to Lake Laogai and getting them closer to finding Appa and exposing Long Feng and the Dai Lee? He just uses his name like it's slander to make Katara feel bad for wanting to get revenge on this one guy. That's how you treat the memory of a friend who died for your bison?
YoU oNlY liKe zUtaRa cAuSe zuKo iS HotTer tHan aAng đđđ
Not to quote literal Jesus... but "you said that".
Plus, man he's a firebender, he's literally hotter than anyone, he can set himself on fire. Lol.
âI think Zuko and Katara wouldâve made a cute coupleâ
normal person irl: oh yeah, now that you mention it I can see it
ATLA fan online: Zutara fans are DELUSIONAL and so ANNOYING. There is NOTHING in the entire show that indicates anything romantic whatsoever. EVERYONE hates Zutara. Katara would never get with her colonizer and Zuko loves MAI. Katara and Aang are SOULMATES. You just like Zutara because they look good together. Well jokeâs on you because Aang got Katara pregnant THREE TIMES â
Omg did people go so far? Pocahontas? At this point I'm going to laugh cause I don't want to cry đ
Zuko is a great character with the best redemption arc, but once he is being shipped with Katara, he immediately becomes evil colonizer and both of them are being compared to this white guy and Pocahontas from Disney..
Could not have said it better đâ¨
What I adore about the idea of Katara ending up with Zuko instead of Aang is that in Zuko she would have someone who would support her in her righteous anger. Had he been there when Katara challenged Pakku for her right to learn how fight, he would've backed her up. He would never have tried to tell Pakku that she didn't mean it. And he would've offered to help her dispose of his body if it came to that.
That's the energy that Katara needs. Someone who understands that she's not jumping into a fight for nothing. If she kills someone, she had a darned good reason.
