Coming out

There is something I've been scared to share, regarding the oc I'm developing. But as more I design her the more I'm pushed to admit it, I even changed my bio to reflect it. With Elizabeth, I had two choices. Either A. keep her relatively normal, or B. keep up her true self. As much as option A is easier, I've decided to risk it to stay authentic to her both as a character, a s/i, a person who deserves to be portrayed the way she was intended to be.

Princess Elizabeth is an age regressor.

"But what even is that?"

Picture this: you're an important person, a princess, whose decisions weigh on the whole country. You're barely an adult (she's ~21), but the pressure is on, each little move can make or break it. You're supposed to know everything. Everyone asks you about everything, you're pressured to know everything while you know in fact nothing, everything is just so overwhelming that you're feeling like a little child. And that's exactly what age regression is - reverting back to a younger state of mind as a coping mechanism. Some people do it for fun, some, like me, use it as something to make every day just a little bit more enjoyable.

"Does that mean Elizabeth is a s/i?"

Partially. I'll ensure to tag any non-canon entries about her, but back when I made her in 2018 she was intended to be a s/i, before I even knew what that meant. She's a whole character, but I don't want to lie to myself about her roots

Favorite headcanon? Probably that Ludwig is a Romantic at heart. I'm unsure how art eras are taught in your region, but Romanticism is an art period between ~1798 and 1837. The person Ludwig got characterized after, Ludwig Van Beethoven, comes from that time period. And it naturally reflects in Ludwig Von Koopa, too. How exactly?

Emotion and passion

his art is a reflection of all of his feelings that are most often trapped. Sure, most of the emotions he displays are negative, but they're intense, grand, Romantic, overwhelming. He's not half as stoic as he makes himself out to be. That's what I remember about the Romanticism the most, and that's what seemingly defines Ludwig, his grand emotions. His huge sense of pride, his sardonism, his jealousy of Bowser Jr, every single feeling is grand and all over even if he's trying to repress it.

The critique of progress

he literally abandoned his inventive work of making machines in favor of focusing on art. And guess what, the Enlightenment period that preceeded Romanticism is most known for the industrial revolution. Almost as if he entered a whole new art period during puberty, going from Kooky to Ludwig, finding a new purpose that is much more emotionally fulfilling.

A return to the past

he fixates on history, old art, human civilizations for a reason. He's seemingly fascinated by the old, by what made the Dark Land what it is today, eager not to repeat his ancestors' mistakes.

An awe of nature

a lot of his work, both musical and even mechanical circles around the nature. He actively doesn't like whenever Bowser attempts to do something against the nature, and he treats it as something pure, without any political chaos or wars. Animals just want to survive, they never have ill intent.

The purity of childhood

why is Ludwig so protective of the Koopalings? Why he's acting all like a helicopter parent whenever they do have to go on the missions? This is the reason. Not having much of a childhood himself, he wants to make sure the other Koopalings (and reluctantly, Bowser Jr)'s childhoods remain as innocent as possible. He believes each kid deserves a loving and safe environment, and it hurts him that the circumstances forced him to run the Koopaling Clan for survival. He tries his best to protect his siblings whenever he can though, especially if they're minors. (Wendy, Morton, Larry)

 The Search for Subjective Truth

he often diverges from Bowser's narratives, why? You guessed it, another Romanticism specific value! He often ignores his mentors and advisors, he's eager to dig into the information outside of the status quo, and often discovers knowledge that would be otherwise unavailable to him if he had blindly listened to Bowser or anyone else for that matter.

The Celebration of the Individual

I'm the oldest Koopaling! I'm the self proclaimed clan leader! I'm different, I'm unique! I don't think I have to explain this one. Ludwig is highly individualistic and self absorbed, to the point it comes off as pompous and brusque. He doesn't want to be a part of the group, but an individual with his own opinions and beliefs, independent from everyone else.

A Break From Convention

which of course, extends to his work flow! Since he's the individual he can do whatever the hell he wants! A lot of his decisions and changes of plans are chaotic, dare I say artistic, surprising everyone. He sees the bigger picture, and will act on his own accord, being two or three steps ahead.

Spirituality and the Occult

Nintendo isn't exactly religion focused, so this part is completely headcanonized. Since he's searching for the truth independent from everything, to me it only sounds natural he'd be interested in exploring the unknown, the irrational, metaphysical even. Like the star wishing, or anything Rosalina related, or even just boos. He's drawn to the unscientific not just to rebel against his childhood self, but to potentially discover something nobody else has.

Freedom

this is also something significant. Romanticism is an active rebellion against tyranny of the previous period. My AU takes place in a middle of a war between the Dark Land and the Mushroom Kingdom, and Ludwig resents the system. He secretly hates *both* Peach and Bowser, who are throwing wars over their political schemes. He sees his targets as equals, both him and the other side being victims of a broken system, system he's eager to fight against.

However, there's one important detail; Ludwig is living in the present day. He's careful not to fall onto logical traps that Romanticism brings (example: women are just pretty objects to stare at, all science is bad). My headcanon is that his heart is in within this time period, not that progress wise he's stuck in the early 19th century. Sorry for making this so long!
