I think simpleton arthur was simply arthur without his thinking skills because he basically did 2 things instinctively as a simpleton: give burning camelot one last haunted look and trust merlin unquestionably and i think these two things were what was in Arthur's heart when it boils down to it; camelot and merlin.

this also parallels the heart of camelot thing when arthur places the burned piece of merlin's jacket in the middle of the map of camelot and now I'm going to implode
