When I was playing through the first tlou game, I tried to shoot the doctor in the knee, could have saved so much trouble too, but he still died.
Then I realized that even if the doctor had survived, Abby and her friends would still come after Joel. From their perspective he ruined their only chance of having a cure, a normal life. Of course they would still want to kill him.
