Ahmet Hergune was missing for over 40 years. 

His sister Munur Hergune said “We used to live in a village with a population of 4000, half Greek half Turkish. In 1974 the disturbances began, my brother joined the Turkish resistance organization. On the 10th of June the Greeks took him away.”

The fig tree was first discovered in 2011. It caught a researchers eye given it was a fig tree and fig trees don’t grow in that area. Upon digging and collecting information, the researcher found Ahmet.

Once police arrive they actually found 3 bodies in total. Investigators figured out that Ahmet was taken with 2 others and thrown in a cave. Once they were thrown in the cave dynamite was thrown in killing the 3.

However the dynamite created a hole in the side of the cave wall creating an opening for sunlight to shine through.

Munur stated that her brother was believed to have been the one who had eaten the fig, later investigators discovered that Ahmet had eaten the fig shortly after he died.
