A Dance with Dragons
Part 2 In which Aemond runs into a bit of trouble and Ilaria is feeling house sick.

Everyone gathered at driftmark for lady laena's funeral, Aegon was off getting drunk and Helaena was talking to herself while playing with her tiny insect friends. Aemond on the other hand was looking out watching the waves, It had been 3 moons ago since he last saw or gotten word from Ilaria, he knew she said she'd returned but everyday when he found himself in their secret garden, reading to himself alone he feared her absence would be permanent.
Jace walked over to comfort a grieving Baela and Rhaena, who were mourning the loss of their mother. They barely got to see their cousins due to their father Prince Daemon moving them out here to Pentos, Aemond had been In a sour mood since he arrived but he still gave his condolences.
Aegon approaches his brother's side as the two watch their sister mumbling gibberish while trying to catch a spider.
"We have nothing in common", Aegon said.
Aemond sighed as if he didn't have enough problems.
"She is your future queen", Aemond said.
Aegon snarled. "You marry her then, I'm sure Ilaria will find someone to occupy her time", he grinned.
Aemond ignored his childish remarks ever since she left Aegon didn't miss his opportunity to rub it in Aemond's face, it's like he thrived off Aemond's misery.
"Mother did not marry us to each other, but if she did I would honor her and perform my duties, as a king would", Aemond said.
Aegon smirked. "Yes, but you're not a king, you're the second brother who is without a dragon", Aegon grabbed another drink as the maiden walked by. "But we do have one thing in common, we fancy creatures with very long legs", he followed after the maiden.
Aemond shook his head.
King Viserys announced his leave, and slowly one by one everyone begins to head inside for sleep, except Aemond, he snuck out and hid on the shore and waited till everyone was gone, all the dragons were on the other side of the castle and he needed to be cautious if he wanted to get there without anyone noticing.
The wind was blowing and it was murky out, Aemond hid in the grass and then quickly but sneakily made his way to the very large dragon that appeared to be napping. He slowly went to grab the lariat but snatched his hand away when Vhagar opened her eyes then turned her head in Aemond's direction, she opened her mouth giving Aemond a glimpse of the red and orange flames she was about to release.
"Dohaeras, Vhagar, lyekiri. Lyekiri", he spoke in Valyrian to calm the dragon. Vhagar lower her head and close her mouth and stared directly at Aemond with it's nostrils flaring. He lets out a breath and attempts to climb upon Vhagar once more, and this time the dragon isn't aggressive. Vhager soon raises, Aemond firmly grabs the satchel, in high Valyrian Aemond says "soves!", which causes Vhagar to start running than take off into the night sky. The higher they got Aemond began sliding, but he did not let go of the satchel, he pulled the lariat to one side and Vhagar began fallen down word, but flue back in the sky.
It was the most thrilling feeling he ever felt, being up this high with the birds, wind blowing in his face. He waited for the moment for so long, it was rather a long wait but like Ilaria said it would be worth it. A smile formed upon his face when he thought of her, the excitement that would fill her when she lays eyes on Vhagar, she went on about how she would make him take her for a ride when he finally came into his dragon. Out of the two of them she was the optimistic one, the were days when Aemond would watch as his brother and sister rode their dragons, Aegon would occasionally tease him over it, he sometimes question if he'd even got one, but Ilaria being her cheerful self told him to let Aegon's words roll off and he would be the one laughing in the end.
Vhagar landed on the sand, one thing was for sure he wasn't as quiet as he was before. He made his way down the lower entry of the acropolis where he noticed Jace, Luke, Baela and Rhaena gave looks of confusion and vex.
"It's him”, Baela said.
"It's me," Aemond said unbothered.
"Vhagar was my mothers Dragon", Rhaena told.
"Your mother is dead and Vhagar has a new rider now", he said with no remorse.
Rhaena held a murderous look in her eyes. "She was mine to claim", she cried.
"Then you should have claimed her, maybe your cousins can find you a pig to ride. it would suit you", Rhaena stormed towards Aemond ready to attack but he pushed the girl down.
Baela hopped in landing a punch to his face, but he soon regained his balance and hit her back. "Come at me again and I'll feed you to my dragon", Jace and Luke ran in to help their cousin. Aemond punched Luke and dodged a few of Jace's hits as he was swinging, he was successful in getting one hit. All the kids began their assault as they got him on the ground, he tasted the blood as it rolled down his mouth. He used his feet to kick Jace away and pushed the two girls off of him, he caught Luke by the neck and picked up a rock that was near. He held the rock above his head ready to strike.
"You well die screaming in flames just as your father did. Bastards''.
"My father’s still alive", Luke cried, Aemond smirked.
"He doesn't know, does he? lord Strong", he smirks at Jace. Jace drew his dagger and charged at Aemond, he threw Luke at him to throw him off but he side stepped him, Aemond used the rock to hit Jace knocking him over, he kept his focus on Jace as Luke managed to retrieve the blade his brother dropped. Jace quickly tossed some sand in Aemond’s eye catching him off guard, and Luke used the dagger and stock clean across the young prince's face.
"Aaaah!", he fell back letting out a cry of agony as the blood began to flow down his face.
The commotion caught the guards attention, and a worried look soon took over the faces when they saw the children.
"Let me see my prince", a guard said to Aemond. To see how bad the damage was, he gave a look of dread.
"Gods be good".

Ilaria sat in the grass reading as Udaya styled her hair. It had been 3 moons since she last saw Aemond, she wrote to him twice a week, it matter not what they talked about only care that he would write her back, rather he talked of food, weather or how his day went, she desperately needed to hear from her companion. In his last letter to her he explains of Lady Laena’s tragic passing and they were having her laid to rest at dirftmark. Ilarea knew Aemond wasn't close with Baela and Rhaena, but she still wanted to be there for him and them, she told her father of what occurred and asked if they could sale to dirftmark, to give their condolences, but he told her It would be foolish to go there and come all the way back. He told her after Udaya gives birth to the baby then they would return, but Ilaria knew for her it would be temporary.
In the morning Ser Arno would be off training in the courtyard, and in the afternoon he would ask Ilaria to go on a walk with him around the street of Bradford, It was a nice place but she couldn't see herself living here, for some reason the crime here was worse than Oxford. Udaya didn't have much of a choice but to adapt to her new left style when she got married, just like Ilaria knew she would have to do.
Ser Arno told her once they wedded, they shall move to Derby, her body filled with weary and her mind went to Aemond, she knew he wouldn't take the news of her leaving well, but she would try to visit as often as she could.
"Finish", Udaya announced. But Ilaria was so in her head she didn't hear her sister.
Udaya noticed that she was picking the petals off a flower while mumbling to herself. She places a comforting hand on her shoulders. "What seems to trouble you dear sister? You are here with me, but not quite".
Ilaria shakes her head. "I have not gotta word back from Aemond, I miss him so. His cousin Lady Laena passed away last he wrote to me".
Udaya places a comforting hand on her sister's shoulder and gives her a gentle smile.
"Gods be good, no pain is greater than that of losing a child. I pray Princess Rhaenys and Lorde Corlys get through these hard times". She gives Ilaria a small smile and rubs her shoulder. "You should be with him, I can arrange Sorin to have the ships ready on the morn".
Ilaria shook her head. "You need me here, the babe will be here any day now and I want to be by your side when It happens".
Udaya grabbed both her sister's hands with a reassuring smile. "You are kind dear sister, but it has been many moons since you last saw your friend and I know he misses you so as you do him. The Maester said the babe shall be here any day now, and when the babe decides It's ready I will have mother and father by my side".
Ilaria pulled Udaya Into a hug. "I do not wish to abandon you, but I can feel In my heart he needs me. I promise to return at once when all is well".
Udaya waved her sister off. "All will be fine, I'll send word to Sorin to ready the ships", Udaya locks her arm with Ilaria as the two share a laugh and stroll toward the castle.
Ilaria was overjoyed with bliss, she enjoyed spending time with her sister, but king's landing was all she knew, It had been her home since she was 3, after she wedded she understood Derby would be her new residence, where her and Ser Aron would start their own family. Kings landing would be that of the past, a mere memory that would invade her thoughts throughout the seasons as she went on with her life. And her dear companion, she prayed to the Gods that her and Aemond will remain as close no matter the distance between them.
She knew once she told him of her betrothal things would be different, but she hoped he would understand and be there for her.
✵✵✵
Ilaria's head snapped forward startled by the knock at the door. She tosses the covers back and places her feet on the cold floor, In attempts to see who would be at her Chambers at this hour.
She opened the door enough to see the person but not enough for him to see her In her night garments. She raises her brows, curious as to why Ser Arno is at her chamber at late hours.
Either someone has died or he is here to lay with her before they have wed. Ilaria felt her stomach drop and hoped that wasn't it, her father always told them a wife is to always perform her duties and honor her husband. She knew she would not deny him entry If he asked, she feared he would go to her father and tell him what an awful bride she was.
She nervously swallowed before speaking. "It is quite late Ser Arno, what brings you at these hours?", she silently Dug her nails into the wooden door.
"Your sister is delivering the baby. The maesters and your mother are with her right this moment, she sent me to come waken you".
Ilaria's eyes doubled in size. With the new information she was given, she shut the door in Arno's face and quickly began putting her shoes and robe on. She opens the door and follows behind Arno as he leads the way.
Ilaria's thoughts were going a mile a minute and she still was a bit tired, but Ser Arno spoke, ceasing the silence.
"It has come to my attention that you will be returning to King's landing on the morn. Trying to get away before the wedding aye? Am I that bad a companion?", he smirks.
Ilaria snapped her head In his direction. It slipped her mind to tell Arno of her leave to kings landing, now he was probably thinking she was avoiding her duties by running away.
"Not at all, I have enjoyed your company Ser Arno it-"
"Please we are to be wedded soon, call me Arno", he smiled.
Ilaria nodded understanding. "Arno. My dear friend lost a family member and I wanted to be there to pay my respects to the families. I will return once I know all is well".
"Aaaaah!".
The closer they got to the room Udaya's cries of agony became clearer. Ser Arno waited in the halls along with their father as Ilaria walked Into the room to see her mother and two maidens by Udaya's side while the maester bent down in front of the bed telling her to push.
Ilaria grabs a warm rag placing it on Udaya's forehead. Ilaria smiled. "You're doing great, just a little more and it will all be over".
"We see the head!", one of the maester said. "We need you to give a few more big pushes my lady".
Udaya shook her head. Her hair was damped and she was covered in sweat, and she was very tired. As she pushes a scream leaves her mouth and soon after the sound of liquid hitting the floor and small cries could be heard.
Udaya laid back against the pillow as the maester began wrapping the baby. "It is a boy my lady", he handed Udaya the crying baby.
"He is perfect", she brought the baby closer for a kiss and a few tears fell from her eyes as she looked at her son in awe.
"Yes he is quite handsome", their mother Lady Aeris smiled.
Ilaria watched in amazement. She knew her sister waited for this moment for many nights and she was thrilled to be sharing this emotional moment with her.
"Would you like to hold him?".
"May I?".
Udaya motions for her to come closer and shows her how to properly hold the babe than giving him to her. Ilaria wears a huge smile as she glances down at her nephew who resembles his father very much.
His skin was wrinkly and soft that reminded her of the fine silk, Ilaria’s being wondering as to which parent he’d strive to be like? Would he be as strong welded and caring as Udaya or fierce and ambitious like Karlins? Whoever he decides to be all she hopes is he will not allow those around him to influence his character negatively. For the Gods nor any man can restore a heart of destruction, only in death would they find peace.
"I've no doubt Ser Karlins has his little knight".
Udaya smiled. "Yes, I might be offended our first born is his little twin considering I'm the one who was carrying him for many moons, but he's kicking like a horse and that is all that matters".
"Have you thought of names?", Ilaria made silly faces at the baby, getting him to laugh.
"Kaen, Karlins said if it was a boy".
Ilaria placed a gentle kiss on top of Kaen's head.
✵✵✵
Udaya cradled the baby and Ilaria gave him a kiss. "Give the Velaryon’s and Targaryen's my condolences", Udaya says.
Ilaria nods. One of the crew members holds out his hand helping her upon the ship, but the sound of her name being called grabs her attention.
She looked down in confusion as Ser Arno approached her. He takes both her hands in his.
"I wish to accompany you to king's landing. I know you want to be with your friend in their time of grievance but If anything happened to you as your husband I could not forgive myself".
"I have lived there almost my entire life and nothing has happened. But If you wish to accompany me I would be more than delighted to have you join me.
When the ships arrived in kings landing Ilaria was overcome with happiness and overwhelmed. She was glad to be back but knowing her time here was temporary was surreal. She let out a breath stepping off the ship.
✵✵✵
The guards greeted Ilaria with a nod opening the gates letting the two in. She smiled taking everything in, Ser Criston was standing off to the side as Aegon was training in the courtyard. His eyes met Ilaria and a smirk formed upon the young Prince's face. Her eyes wandered around searching for Aemond, but he was nowhere about.
Ilaria approached Aegon. "You finally return, I will say you missed out on all the fun while you were gone".
Ilaria raises her brow. "Fun? I'm not sure I follow, Aemond told me of Lady Laena's passing but that is all. What else has occurred in my absence?".
"Lucerys took one of his eyes, but in the end he gained a dragon". Aegon shakes, appearing as if he wants to laugh.
Ilaria's eyes widened in fear and her stomach felt like a volcano erupted within. "He-he lost an eye? Where is he now? I must go to him".
Aegon rolled his eyes. "This was many moons ago, three if I’m not mistaken. You'd do well to hear the rest of what happened that night from Helaena, for I remember little of it after they waking me from my slumber. It doesn't seems to bother Aemond, he may have lost an eye but at least he has a dragon now". He waved dismissively.
Ilaria feared she was losing her heard? She had to blink a few times to be sure she was not the one in a deep slumber, and that Aegon was not showing little remorse for his brother.
"How can you stand there peacefully as If the matter is not dire, he may have been killed and you would not give an ounce of despair for your own brother?", Ilaria felt herself overcome with emotion as she bald her fist at her side.
She was aware the two brothers weren't as close as Lucerys and Jacaerys, they had their differences but she never imagine It was as bad as Aegon not caring of Aemond's well-being.
"What well you have me do Ilaria? Cut out the eyes of a wild pig and gifted to him? The damage is done and there is nothing that can be done about It".
Ilaria stepped closer to Aegon, glaring at him. "Even when your brother has been mangled you will not show remorse", she stormed past him.
"Oh please dear Gods let him be alright", Ilaria rushed down the hall towards Aemond's room. But collided with someone else causing her to fall down on her bum.
She quickly got up dusting herself off and apologized to the person she bumped into.
"Ilaria?".
She hadn't realized the person she almost ran over was the queen.
"Your father did not send word of your return, we're not expecting you so early. But I'm thrilled your back", she pulled Ilaria Into an embrace.
"Were you going to see Aemond?".
She nodded. "Yes my queen".
"I was going that way as well but I feel he'd enjoy your company more. He has not left his chamber in days, he reads and watches out the window for the most part".
"I will talk to him".
Alisent shook her head before turning on her heels and the other direction.
Ilaria rusted on his door going to knock but her name being called halted her movement. She looked to her left to see Arno approaching.
"You took off rather quickly, I barely had time to keep up".
"I apologize, I just wanted to know he was alright".
Ser Arno gave a small smile. "When you mention a friend back in kings landing I was not expecting it to be one of the princes. You two must be rather close with your urgency to return".
"Aemond and I have been friends for a long time, he is my closest friend. Well you wait out here while I talk with him?".
Arno gazes shifted between the door and Ilaria, he had a hesitant look upon his face before it's replaced with a smile.
"Of course".
Ilaria knocked on the door waiting for him to tell her to enter but it was silent. She tried again and still nothing, she let out a breath before opening his door.
Her mouth slightly opened as she took in the appearance of his chamber. It was gloaming with no source of light coming in. Ilaria pulls back the curtains, and instantly the place is illuminated by golden yellowish rays.
Ilaria remembered when she would come into his chambers every day to wake him up so they could start the day off together. He would become upset with her for disrupting his slumber but she would make it up to him by singing their favorite melody from his favorite book.
"Mmm, I'm feeling not well mother, I want to stay in bed today and the days following", Aemond's groggy voice said, under the covers.
She sat at the end of his bed and rested a hand on the blanket.
"No, it's me, I was worried, you hadn't written back for some time so I came back early".
Aemond tensed up when he felt her place a hand on him. He missed her so, he hadn't stepped foot out of his chamber since the incident, he didn't want her to see him like this, a one eyed freak. She would run away screaming In horror If she laid eyes upon him, he cared about her too much to put her through that.
He prayed to the Gods she would give up and go away If he stayed very still, but he knows her better than anyone and ignoring her never got him anywhere.
"Aemond there's nothing wrong with you, so get up", she snatched the covers away and Aemond quickly covered his face with a pillow.
Ilaria tried crawling to him to take the pillow away but he hopped off the bed hiding behind a chair. It was as if the two were playing the game of cat and mice, whenever she tried getting close to him he went to the other side and when she went to that side he ran to a different spot.
"Why are you hiding your face from me, Aemond?".
"As I said once before I am not feeling well, and If you come any closer you may catch what I have", he continued moving around.
"That is not the truth", she was starting to get irritated.
"It is".
"No it is not. Aegon told me what happened, you were attacked. I-I came back because I was worried, just for you to treat me as if I'm a stranger on the streets and not the friend who cares for you".
Aemond felt his heart sting. Last thing he desired was for her to feel she was not wanted, he was letting his pride cloud his judgment, but he knew once he revealed himself she would see him differently and he was not ready for that. He could tolerate Aegon constant teasing but losing his closer companion would be a deeper wound than any other.
When she took the pillow from him he held it down and placed his hand over his injured eye. His breathing picked up when she placed her hand on top of his trying to move it but his grip was firm.
"Let me see", Ilaria whispered.
Aemond shook his head. "It's not the face you once knew, it's gruesome. Please Ilaria, I don't want to frighten you", he pleaded.
"My price, our friendship wasn't forged on looks, it was the bond we shared with one another beyond explanation. Well you let me look upon the same face that brings a smile to mine?".
Aemond took a deep breath then slowly started raising his head. He and Ilaria held eye contact as she slowly began lowering his hand. Ilaria tried to keep her emotions In as she took in the new addition to his face, she couldn't fathom how his nephews could do something so cruel.
Her thumbs strokes his cheeks and she gives him a comforting smile. He pulled her closer resting his forehead against hers. He didn't realize how much he missed her touch till she wasn't here everyday yelling in his ear and comforting him In the way that only she can. Aemond had not been to the garden since she left, he knew if he confessed that to her she would scold him, he couldn't even bring himself to walk past it, It was both their spot and there would be no point in him going by himself. But If Ilaria said she wanted to go out there, he would go with her without hesitation.
She placed a kiss on his scar. "You're still as handsome as I remember. We promise to share with each other, don't hide yourself from me Aemond".
"You have my word", he said.
She noticed his hair had grown two inches since she last saw him. Ilaria ran her fingers through his head and he closed his eyes enjoying the feeling of her playing in his hair.
"You've traveled a long way, I shall have the servants warm you a bath", he pulled her towards the bed. Aemond kneels In front of Ilaria and removes her shoes then begins rubbing her feet.
Ilaria's head went back as she let out a sigh of relief. Aemond rubbed in between her toes, applying pressure to the center of her foot, which Ilaria filled his ears with her giggles.
Aemond looked up and his eyes met Ilaria's. "I've missed you so, I feared you'd never return", he looked down with sunken eyes.
A few strands of hair covered his face so Ilaria stroked his cheeks causing him to lean Into her touch, before she placed the falling strand behind his ear. "I missed you as well. I feared you were still upset. I left when you didn't send word back to me".
Aemond sat next to Ilaria on the bed taking her hand In his. "I was angry, not at you but myself. I feared you would find another who would replace me".
Ilaria felt a sting In her chest. "No, the space you hold In my heart couldn't be filled by any other. There Is no replacing you".
Ilaria gave a small smile as Aemond stared Into the eyes of the girl he's loved since she blessed him with that beautiful smile when the two first met. Placing his hands on either side of her cheeks, Aemond placed his lips onto Ilaria's. His eyes were closed In complete bliss, her lips were soft like silk and she tasted of sweet plums.
Aemond would get lost in Ilaria sweet voice as she read to him In the garden, he'd fantasize that the couple's In the stories devoting their undying love for the other were him and Ilaria. He dreamed of how her lips would feel on his, how her sweet perfume would pull him In even more as they made sweet love to each other. He wanted It all with Ilaria, he loved her so much, he didn't care that she wasn't a princess, she meant more to him than gold. He wanted her to be his first and last everything, and he wanted to be her first and last.
Aemond's hand ran down Ilaria's arm causing goosebumps to form, as If his touch snapped her out of the spell she was under. Ilaria pulled away hopping to her feet with widened eyes. Oh dear Gods what have I done? she thought to herself. Ilaria was at a loss for words, her mind was completely blank. Her and Aemond were close as could be, he would ask the queen to have her bring the finest dresses, robes, bedding, he would gift her with many things that Ilaria would refuse most times. She saw it as Aemond being a good friend, It never crossed her mind that the young prince had romantic feelings for her.
Aemond began approaching Ilaria with concern. "What troubles you?".
Ilaria shook her head. "I-"
*Knock*
*Knock*
"Ilaria? my dearest, you've been In there some time, is all well?", Arno said from the other side.
She was so caught up In the moment she had forgotten Arno was waiting for her In the hall.
Aemond looked at the door In confusion, not recognizing the voice. He turned to Ilaria who wore a look of shame on her face as she played with her fingers.
"Ilaria", he approached her with slow steps. "Who is at the door?".
This was It, the moment she dreaded. It could go one or two ways, Aemond would be understanding and accept she was to marry Arno, or he would forsake her and she would lose the person she cares about the most. Ilaria couldn't stop the tears from falling once they started.
She knew what his reaction would be, It was more than clear from the kiss he had feelings for her and once she told him she was promised to another their friendship would be no more. She'd miss him sneaking to her chamber in the night to talk to her till the sun came up, she'd miss their time In the garden when she'd read to him and she found him looking very deep In thought as If he wasn't paying attention, but she knew he was. She would miss everything.
"My father told me of a suitor he found for me, Udaya's husband's younger brother Arno. We are to be wedded as soon as the red rose has visited me".
Aemond mouth opened and closed. It felt like his heart had been ripped from his chest, It wasn't true he refused to believe she was promised to another, it was like a bad dream. He had to see for himself.
Arno's eyes double In size when Aemond opens the door. Arno felt uneasy as the prince eyed him up and down with revulsion. He turned away from Arno and not looking at Ilaria either.
"I appreciate your concern for me, lady Ilaria. I do not wish to take up all your time, when your husband is waiting on you. I think It best you return to Oxford, I'm sure your parents miss you and I wouldn't want to be the one to keep you from the wedding plans", Aemond widens the door for Ilaria.
Ilaria nodded her head walking towards the door. When she was closer enough she wrapped her arms around Aemond and whispered. "No one could replace you, and I hope you find someone that you love more than me".
Once she left Aemond closed the door and slid down to the floor, taking everything In. She was gone, Aegon was right all along someone else had come along and claimed her as their own. He loved her, he loved her so much It hurt, he was ready to confess his feelings for her but It seems the Gods were still punishing him for his previous actions with his nephews.
Ilaria was the only friend he had, who he trusted more than anyone, and just like that she was gone. She would soon be wedded and there was nothing he could do about it. She would leave king's landing, start her own family and forget all about Aemond.
As upset and heartbroken Aemond was, he couldn't find It in himself to hate her. If she was truly happy with this Arno, Aemond would be forced to move forward without her.
But he knew whoever he gave his last name to would never have his full heart, because the girl with big brown eyes and wild curly hair would be his one and only true love.
A Dance with Dragons

"Aemond?", the soft voice whispered while poking the young Prince's side. "Come on get up, the birds are up and singing already, you said we can play in the fields. Now get up and stop being arduous", Ilaria started jumping on the bed while In a sing-song voice to wake him.
"Ugh, alright I'm up", he groans. And Ilaria's jumping can to a halt and she flops down next to her best friend while wearing a smile on her face like a fool. Aemond throws the covers off himself then walks over to his chamber pot to relieve himself. He strolls back and then proceeds to remove his clothing but halts when he hears a gasp behind him. He looks back to see Ilaria with her hands covering her eyes, which causes him to raise his brow.
"Aemond, I warned you about exposing yourself in front of me. I don't think your future comrade would be very fond of another friend girl seeing you bare", Aemond rolled his eyes.
"Well if said friend would have given me more time to gather myself and fully wake up we would be in the clearing by now", he said with annoyance.
With her eyes still covered Ilaria walked toward the door. "I've already prepared your bath and gathered your clothes, I'll wait for you in the grand hall", she left. Aemond approached the tub and the second the scalding hot water submerged him, he felt himself loosening up.
Ilaria sat cross-legged across from Aemond's sister princess Helaena, she studied the little centipede that moved around in her hand. Ilaria appreciated Helaena's presence, she was so much different from her two brothers Aegon and Aemond. Aemond was her best friend indeed but there were times when he would be a bit overbearing and too serious, Helaena on the other hand was laid back and in her own world.
"This one is yours", Ilaria placed the flower crown on Helaena's head. Helaena looked up from the tiny insect and gave a smile.
Aemond had worn an unamused look as he wandered the grand Halls looking for Ilaria. He came to an abrupt halt as he was looking out one of the very large windows and caught sight of Ilaria and his sister. Because of his sister's unusual behavior not many of the other kids were interested in interacting with her, but not Ilaria. She didn't let Helaena's strange nature stop her from befriending her, she told Aemond she found her passion for insects intriguing.
It brought a smile to his face to see them bonding. He had to admit to himself before she came along he was unattended and wasn't interested in becoming friends with anyone. He and Aegon weren't close, due to his only focus being on getting drunk or who he was going to have in his bed next. Aemond was of 10 of age and he had yet to retrieve a dragon egg which Aegon gained humor from, and would occasionally tease Aemond over it.
Ilaria would tell him not to let Aegon get to him and that waiting for his Dragon would be worth the wait. He just wished it would happen sooner than later just to shut his imbecile brother's mouth.
"Your sister kept my time occupied while you dragged your feet. Come sit", she padded the spot next to her. Aemond's eyes went to Helaena who was mumbling gibberish before taking his spot next to Ilaria.
Ilaria gave a smile and then placed the crown she made for him upon his head. "A Prince without a crown is like a man without honor", he looked at her with hooded eyes. She grabbed the book that was resting on her side. "Should I finish where we left off", she asked.
Aemond shrugged his shoulders and plucked the grass. "I suppose, I'm curious to know if the father finds out that it was his son that poisoned his brother", Aemond responded.
"Yes, it is quite awful, that some things such as money and power can drive a family apart and lead them to do cruel things to one another. But I feel that we will get a satisfying ending", she smiled.
"Mhm", he rested his head in her lap once she began to read. His body began to loosen up from her soothing voice he looked up and stared at the side of her face and admired her striking features. He would turn away from her when she looked down and gave him her captivating smile.
She was a sight for sore eyes and he found himself growing more and more prisoner to her beauty. But he would never tell her that he was afraid she didn't share the same feelings as him.
"Aww, and what do we have here? Aemond's playing dress up with the girls", Aegon's annoying laughter cut us off guard. He stood laughing with Jacaerys as if it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen.
Aemond let out a sigh. "We were in the middle of something, so state your business", Aemond spoke.
"Well I can see that, but I and Jace have a surprise for you but it's down in the Dragon pit", he stood up straight.
Aemond raises a brow. "A surprise? What's the occasion, my name day is 2 moons away. So what surprise have you conjured up", Aemond gave a sharp look.
"It wouldn't be much of a surprise if we told, now would it?", Luke smiled.
Aemond looked between the three, it weighed heavily on his shoulders and he questioned whether or not he should go with them. In the end his curiosity got the best of him and he removed himself from Ilaria.
She gave him a gentle smile. "We shall finish later then?", she closed the book.
"Indeed", Aemond agreed.
"Would you like your matching necklace and earrings before we leave", Aegon snickered.
Aemond clenched his jaw, removing the flower crown. "Let's just go", he let them lead the way.
Aemond was a little confused when they walked into the dragon pit, what surprise could they have for him there.
Aemond never had a reason to come down to the dragon pit with him being dragonless. He would sometimes wonder when he saw the other with their dragons what his would be like. What color would she or he be? How large would it be, how long did he have to wait before he got her or him?.
"We felt bad about you being the only one without a dragon so we went out and fount you one", Aegon told.
Aemond had a neutral expression. "How", he said.
"The Gods provide", Aegon said. The two brothers and their nephew stood off to the side as Lucerys came out of the den holding a strap with something attached to the end. Aemond was left mute when Luceerys came into the light and the pig with the fake wings walked alongside him.
Aegon padded Aemond shoulders while laughing. "Be sure to mount her carefully. First flights always rough", he snorted in his ear before leaving behind an irritated Aemond.
Ilaria went back to her chamber to finish stitching Aemond's name-day gift. Pic
He told her not to bother herself with getting him a gift but he should have known she wouldn't listen. So time had passed since she'd last spoken to Aemond, maybe Aegon was finally coming around to be the big brother he lacks to be. Ilaria was no fool she knew that deep down Aegon was a decent person and he secretly admired Aemond.
"What do you say? Do you think he'll like it?", I showed the handmaiden his gift.
"It is very lovely my lady, he well love it", she smiled.
The door being open caught our attention and Ilaria's father appeared with his hands behind his back and his head raised high.
"Would you leave us", he sternly said and the handmaiden gave a nod leaving the two alone.
She placed the needle and thread to the side and stood to give her father a curtsy. Lord Wilhelm slowly walked around his daughter admiring her features, every day she looked more and more like her mother. Ilaria looked at the fireplace in the distance as her father twirled a strand of her hair between his fingers.
"I have gotten word from your sister that she is expecting and with her husband away handling problems in the North your mother thinks it best if we are there with her", he told.
Ilaria looked at him with anxious eyes. He picked up the dragon carving she made for Aemond and gave a blank expression. "And this is for?".
"Aemond's name day is two moons away and I wanted to give this to him since he doesn't have one, I hope it brings joy to him", Ilaria smiled.
"Mh, the boats should be arriving before sundown, Farah will help gather your belongings", he said, leaving his daughter with her thoughts.
She was thrilled to become an aunt, her sister Udaya had been trying to conceive for years but sadly resulted in the loss of three babes. But Ilaria felt it, she knew her sister would not mourn for this one.
Alicent was sitting with her daughter as she counted the legs on her centipede. "Your Grace", a guard announced while pulling a frantic Aemond by the arm. Her eyes widened in alert.
"Aemond?", his mother said. She began to dust him off while taking in her son's appearance, there was smudge marks from dirt on his face and clothes, that she didn't have to ask how they came about.
"He did it again", Helaena said.
"After how many times have you been warned, must I have you confined to your Chambers", Alicent threatened.
"They made me do it", Aemond tries to reason.
"As if you needed encouragement".
"They gave me a pig".
"A what?".
"They said they found a dragon for me, but it was a pig", he shook his head in disappointment.
Alicent let out a sigh and gave her son a reassuring smile. Aemond looked into the far distance.
"You will have a dragon one day, I know it", Alicent pulled him into an embrace.
"He well have to close an eye", Helaena said amongst herself.
"They all laughed", he buried his face into his mother's chest.
A knock grabbed their attention and Ilaria appeared before them. "Your Grace", she bowed her head.
Once her sights went to Aemond a gasp slipped from her mouth. "You went into the dragonpit. Are you hurt", Ilaria began to examine his body for marks.
Aemond shook her off, rolling his eyes trying his absolute hardest not to blush in front of his mother and sister. "Aegon and my nephews thought it be clever to gift me a winged pig, in my dragon's absent", he explains.
Ilaria frowned. She didn't hesitate to pull him into her arms.
Alicent watched in glee as the two embraced each other. Ilaria was the daughter of Lord Wilhelm of Dayme is one of the many men that is among the king's councilman, and since their arrival her and Aemond have been inseparable. She was well aware her son's weren't as close as she'd like them to be but she was gratified for the sweet girl who had captured her son's affection.
"I have come to tell of my leave. Udaya is expecting soon and my mother think it best if we're with her during these times".
"Yes your father was telling the king of his daughter's pregnancy, due give her my gratitude", Alicent told.
Ilaria gave a smile. "I well, my queen".
Without a word, Aemond turned on his heels. He wanted to get as far away as possible. He could not look upon her eyes as she asserted those words to him, he knew his feelings for her and were scared to speak upon them, she was leaving. What if she never came back then what was all their afternoon together, late night exploring the castle and falling asleep in each other's arms for?
Aemond took in his surroundings and was surprised to have found himself in he and Ilaria's secret spot behind the castle was a little Flower Patch were they would sneak away too and read to each other enjoying one's company. Aemond plopped down and picked at the baby dandelions, a smile came upon his face as he recalled the time he collected the flowers for Ilaria, the way her eyes lit up caused his heart to skip a beat he was afraid she might hear it but he knew from that moment on, it would only beat for her.
A shadow cast over him and he didn't have to look up, he knew it was her. Even when she sat across from him he did not spare her a glance.
"Aemond", she attempted to take his hand. But he quickly pulled away as if she burned him. Ilaria looked into the distance.
"I know you're upset, but once we are certain Udaya and the babe is great in health we should return to Kings Landing", she pulled Aemond into her embrace and instead of resisting he wrapped his arms around the girl as a way to keep her close. Ilaria pulled away but held onto his hands. She gently brushed his tears as she gave a sad smile.
"My companion, dear friend no tide is too long and no dragon's flame burns brighter than our bond, I shall return to you", she placed a gentle kiss upon his cheek. Aemond raises his brow as he felt her place something in his hand.
"I hope I'd give this to you on your name day, but I guess this Is a better time than any. You will have a dragon. I know it, it well be glorious and the biggest they have laid eyes upon" and it well be worth the wait", she smiled.
"My Prince", she gave one last nod before leaving behind a heavy-hearted Aemond. Once she was out of sight he gazed down at the object she left in his hands more tears began to fall but they were different than the ones before.
He did not care what it took, or who did not approve Ilaria would be his.
Ilaria lets out a giggle as she watches the dolphins doing tricks. Aemond could never keep a straight head whenever they were on the docks, so she read to him to keep his mind at ease. "Prince Aemond was rather devastated for our departure I assume", Lord Wilhelm asked his daughter.
"It is expected, I am his companion and he mine", Ilaria admitted. "I would act no different if he were in my place".
Lord Wilhelm gave a slight nod. "I'm sure", he placed his hands on Ilaria's shoulders so they were facing the other. "You are coming of age. Udaya was 15 when she married Ser Karlins Blackwood, and we feel his cousin would be a suitable match for you", Ilaria looked at her father, baffled.
Even when she was coming of age, marriage barely seemed to cloud her mind. Her mother would tell her that marriage was a duty, something that was expected of us and she shouldn't look upon it as a burden but a rose patch in the middle of December. She knew what was expected of her.
"If you and mother wish it, I shall perform my duties", her eyes drifted down.
"He wishes to marry after you've flowered, you shall make him a proud husband and give him many heirs", Wilhelm gives his daughters shoulders a squeeze.
She gave a small smile nodding her head.
Udaya stood at the grand entry with a huge smile on her face, and Ilaria ran into her arms as the two sisters let the tears of joy fall as they embraced each other. "You've grown like a tree, you were practically a babe last I'd seen you, now you're all grown up and nearly a woman", Udaya held her sister's face in her hand as they let out a giggle.
"Indeed I was only of 7 years when you last saw me, I'm 11 now and soon to be wife of your husband's cousin", she jokingly said.
Udaya united her arm with Ilaria and they began on their way down the foyer.
"Aww, yes Ser Arno Blackwood, quite the charmer that one. I could not agree on a more promising match, you well adore him, he is very humorous, he trains with the sword and is rather skillful I well say".
Ilaria tried to hide the discomfort on her face, she didn't want to trouble her sister but every time she mentioned his name it felt like her heart sank. "Enough talk of man", she huffed. "What of you dear sister? the babe too, how are you feeling?".
Udaya let out a breath of air taking a seat on one of the benches. Ilaria held her sister's hand while she stared off into the distance. "I thought the Gods were punishing me when I lost the first and after the second one, I wanted to give up altogether but Karlins was there for me best he knew, but it pained me so to look upon his face, I felt as if I failed him. He told me we shall try again and this time it would be different, I pray he's right I could not bear the loss of another child", Ilaria wipes her falling tears.
"I don't doubt him one bit, you'll give birth to your babe and smile upon its face with so much joy", she pulled her sister in her embrace.
"You're great, when you and Ser Arno have children they will be proud to call you their mother. I know it", Ilaria fake smile.
"That is an achievement in itself", Ilaria looked down.
"You'll make a beautiful bride" come now I shall let you settle in", the two walked hand in hand down the hall till they made it to Ilaria's chamber.
"I shall fetch you when supper is ready", she said.
Ilaria wandered towards the bed letting her fingers run over the material of the sheets and she couldn't help but think of the one back in king's landing. Aemond would go out of his way to make sure she had all the commodities she required, even when she kindly declined his gifts he was persistent. She felt the tears begin to fall. It had near been three days since she last saw him and she missed him terribly, Ilaria envisioned Aemond moping around his chambers or maybe he found himself in they're secret spot to ease his mind. Her dearest companion, how would he take the news of her betrothed? they did not have to be friends but allies for her sake, Ilaria couldn't bear the thought of losing Aemond she would mourn for him.
"Knock"
"Knock"
"Miss where here to assist you", the handmaiden stuck her head through the door. Ilaria nodded in approval and the two started on her bath while the others were helping her out of her dress. Ilaria let out a giggle when the maiden began to scrub her feet.
"My apologies miss".
"I'm quite thankful, my day started to feel dull. a good laugh was needed", she smiled.
The maiden styled her hair while the other fastened her shoes. "Were finished my lady", Ilaria rose from the chair and walked to the full length mirror. The girls did an outstanding job on her.
*Knock*
*Knock*
Ilaria looks back to see her sister smiling in approval. "We're ready then?".
Ilaria and Udaya shared a laugh as they entered the dining hall, grabbing the attention from everyone at the table. their father held a disappointing look upon his face, Ilaria quickly apologized for the disruption and took her seat. Ilaria went to take a bite of her bread when everyone at the table abruptly stood to their feet. A boy with brown wavy hair, and blue eyes appeared, and her father smiled as he came towards me. She hopped to her feet knocking the chair over in the process. She went to pick it up but the blue eyed boy stopped her, to retreat it himself.
"Quite ungraceful you are?", he spoke with a soothing yet deep voice.
"I have my moments", she fired back.
The boy smirked. "Don't we all. Ser Arno of house Blackwood, it is with great pleasure to look upon the face of my future wife. and what a gorgeous face it is, lady Ilaria", he placed a kiss on the back of her hand.
Ilaria felt like her breathing had stopped and her heart sank to her feet, she couldn't fathom a single thought, her mind went blank. Not wanting to be rude she said the first thing that came to mind. "You've pretty eyes' ', a smile spreads across his face.
"Gods be good, if our children inherit your breathtaking features and my captivating eyes, a happy man I well be. Shall we?", he gestures towards the seat. As everyone begins talking amongst themselves, Ilaria ate her meal in silence. she looked up when Ser Arno stood to his feet, clicking his fork with his wine glass getting everyone's attention. "I wish to raise my cup to lady Ilaria, I shall do everything in my power to make you happy and I hope to be your companion as well as your husband", everyone began draining their cups as he finished his speech.
Ilaria gave a small smile while he placed a kiss upon her cheek.
