I think the worst part about the meeting today wasn't that the school kept misgendering me, but the fact that my mom even slipped up twice before defaulting to "they".

Like, granted, my mom knew me as she/her until I was 16 and she/they until I was 23, whereas everyone else in the room has only known me with he/him pronouns, but like.... Come on... I've been fully out for about 4 1/2 years.... 🤦🏻‍♂️

So fun fact about me is that I've been chronically homeless on and off since I was 16 years old.

I've never been in a salvation army homeless shelter because they refused to take trans people at the one near where I used to live, but I have been kicked out of an affiliated United Way shelter for coming out as non-binary and crying whenever the staff barged into my room while I was in the middle of changing clothes to comment about my genitalia and my gender at birth.

I know someone who was staying at a salvation army shelter and ended up getting kicked out because they bought their kids "too many Christmas gifts" using gift cards that they had earned through receipt scanning websites and gift cards they have been given by friends and family specifically to get their kids Christmas presents.

I know someone who worked as a bell ringer during the holiday season while staying at a salvation army shelter and not only were they never paid, but the salvation army attempted to charge them because they thought that there was less in the bucket than there should have been despite the fact that the buckets were literally locked shut and could not be accessed by volunteers.

I know transgender women who have gone to salvation army shelters after having their legal name and gender changed but the second that someone finds out that they're trans they get kicked out, often literally kicking and screaming, with a host of transphobic and homophobic slurs thrown after them.

I know probably seven or eight people who have accused either staff or other people staying at salvation army shelters of sexual assault and nothing has ever been done about it. Two of the people I'm thinking of were underage when it happened and we're staying at the shelter with their parents. The salvation army does not give a shit if you get raped while you're staying in one of its shelters because they think it's not their problem.

Generally just fuck the salvation army.

I broke two ribs and didn't know for a few weeks because I thought I was just sore or having a gallbladder attack. I developed costicondritis (spelling is off, chest wall swelling) that made me think I was having heart issues and the ER trip showed that I was in the process of healing two fractured ribs (3 cracks total!).

Heightened pain tolerance and being used to being sick is crazy.

An issue with a lot of whump and injury writing guides is that they also tend to assume that the characters are always able-bodied but like.

It's been proven over and over again that people with chronic pain have higher tolerances for everyday pain, including things that would leave other people crying or screaming. When you experience dizziness, body aches, chills, etc as just your baseline, those things aren't a good indicator that you're injured or bleeding. Even mild concussions are very hard to notice when you have chronic headaches/migraines (speaking from experience).

And those are just the experiences of general chronic pain, not even more severe and debilitating conditions that can completely warp someone's relationship to their body and their brain's way of processing pain.

It kinda bothers me when people are confronted for really negative and harmful behavior and their only response is, "well I have this disorder, so I'm the victim, everyone else I hurt is just ableist" and it's like....

You're not incapable of being responsible for your own actions just because you're neurodivergent.

There's no diagnosis that excuses being a horrible person to people who didn't do anything to you.

If you're old enough to gaslight people in media or online by going "I'm allowed to be mean/hurtful because I have this disorder", you're old enough to seek out help for your behaviors.

Some statistics show that up to 60% of people are neurodivergent or mentally ill in some way. Most of those people don't act like an asshole and then go, "oh it's not my fault because of this diagnosis." They take responsibility for their actions.

This is kinda directed at something vaguely political (I love election season!) but also just generally as someone who's kinda sick of hearing "it's not my fault, I'm bipolar!" When I also have bipolar disorder, or "it's not my fault, I'm autistic!" When I'm also autistic, or "it's not my fault, I have a traumagenic disorder!" When I also have a traumagenic disorder....

Idk being mentally ill doesn't excuse being a dick to people.
