now I’m full on sobbing

can we just get some pure thomas and virgil content. I'm missing my father/son duo :c Also, you au makes me want to cry with tears of happiness and sadness at the same time and I am so utterly in love with it!

Absolutely of course.

“They’ll love you, Buddy. Just take a breath okay?” Thomas murmured, ruffling his hair.

“They were okay with you adopting me? It’s just- we’re so close in age and… don’t they want you to be with someone before you adopt?” Virgil asked, twisting his fingers in the fabric of his t-shirt. He’d only been with Thomas for two months now. What if his family convinced him to give Virgil back?

“I know you’re nervous. But our family is loving and accepting, m’kay?” He asked, then sighed quietly, scratching at the back of his neck. “Well. Now. That’s not important, though.”

Our family. Our.

“What do you mean? Now?” Virgil asked. Thomas sighed, not taking his eyes off the road.

“Well… there was a time where we didn’t really accept a lot of things. When my brother came out, none of us understood. Not even me. And then even after I learned to accept him, I was… well, scared that the same thing would happen to me. I didn’t come out until six years ago.”

“You didn’t?” Virgil asked. “Oh god- what if they don’t like me because I’m gay- I can hide it! I can just pretend to be straight, it can’t be that hard, right? I mean-“

“Take a breath.” Thomas reminded him. “You don’t have to hide anything. Things are different now. I know I haven’t had you very long, and I don’t expect you to think of me as your dad. But as far as I’m concerned, you’re my son. The love I have for you is the same as the love I could have for any baby that was biologically mine. And they’re going to love you just the same.”

Virgil took in a deep breath, staring up at the house in front of him as they pulled up. He was scared.

“C’mon. It’s time to meet your grandparents.” Thomas smiled, turning off the car. “Christian is here too. Patrick should be here soon, but Shea is deployed. You won’t meet him for a little while.” He hummed. “But you get to meet your cousin, too! She’s a sweetheart, she’s only six months old.”

Virgil followed Thomas in, just slightly behind him. He was extremely nervous, but the second they got to the door Thomas’ parents were opening it with big smiles.

“Hi, dear!” His mom cooed, giving him a tight hug. His father turned to Virgil though, his eyes warm.

“You must be Virgil.” He said. “Thomas has told us so much about you.”

“He told me a lot about you two, too. It’s really nice to meet you, Mr. and Mrs. Sanders.” Virgil smiled. His mom laughed lightly, pulling him into a hug.

“Oh, don’t be silly! Call us grandma and grandpa!” She cooed. Her husband chuckled, patting her back lightly.

“And it that makes you uncomfortable, you can call us by our first names.” He said.

Virgil nodded as they stepped away from each other and Thomas wrapped an arm around his shoulders to comfort him. They were just as nice as Thomas, he didn’t know why he’d been so worried.

“Where’s Christian?” Thomas asked. “I wanna see my baby niece, and he needs to meet his nephew!”

“He’ll be here soon. Come on, I have some appetizers set up that you can snack on before they get here.” His dad said.

Virgil really liked their family, he found out. They were all so welcoming, they made him feel like they fit right in. He was a little shocked when he saw Patrick because of just how much he looked like his dad, but he shook it off fairly easily.

His new cousin was his favorite part, she was so giggly and smiley and she kept grabbing onto his fingers while he held her on the couch. That’s where he was, playfully wiggling one of her rattles in front of her for her to grab and play with, when Thomas’ mom came in with a box.

“Here, Virgil, I have a present for you.” She cooed. His cheeks went bright red immediately.

“Oh, you didn’t have to-“

“No no, I made one of these for every one of my children while I was pregnant, and every one of my grandchildren are going to get one too. I started this the second Thomas told me he was trying to adopt you.”

Thomas took his niece from Virgil, smiling knowingly and nodding. “Just open it, Bud, you’ll love it.” He promsied.

Virgil let out a shaky breath, nodding in agreement and letting her hand him the box. He opened it and his eyes widened at what he saw. A beautiful pastel purple and blue knitted blanket with a square pattern and little stormclouds and hearts knitted into the squares.

“Valerie told me that your dad used to call you Stormcloud.” Thomas smiled. “I went ahead and told Mom. She likes making the blankets really personal.”

Virgil pulled it out, shocked at how big it was. It would cover all of him… and it was so nice and the yarn was probably the softest thing he’d ever owned…

He didn’t even realize there were tears in his eyes until he heard Thomas’ quiet “Aww, Buddy.”

“Thank you so much…” Virgil said shakily, hugging it to his chest. He felt so welcome now, he didn’t know how to process this.

He had a new family…

That night, Thomas tucked him into his bed with his new blanket. Virgil felt safe and secure, and Thomas felt his chest swell because this was how he always imagined putting his child to bed, tucked in with the blanket his mom made them.
