The robins’ arrested development is fascinating to me on a meta level.

The first child sidekick of the golden age of comics, never meant to be a man, a child for forty years who fought and demanded the right to grow up.

The second robin is slain in his career’s infancy. An unaging symbol of lost innocence because innocence itself was no longer required. Who burst back out of his grave unwillingly, in a man’s body, dragged into adulthood all at once. A child killed twice over.

The third robin, who was comfortable in his place as a child as a sidekick, evicted because someone else needed that spot, only to be wedged back into the box. Not quite a man, but he can’t go back to being a boy either, stuck in the in between.

And the fifth robin, still a child. Destined to grow into an adult role that will never be vacated, and so cannot grow up.

Every parental figure this little dude has just kinda treats him as another vigilante and ignore the fact that he is a literal child.

I read a fanfic a while ago where after he grew up he just lived on the kent farm in smallville instead of becoming anything related to saving or hurting anyone and that's my favorite headcanon for him

What genuinely hurts me is that being able to relate to a similar situation like this that Damian didn’t ask this to be snide or smart in reply to his guardian.

Like does he genuinely have to spend his whole life trying to be something you want him to be, when you take his childhood, his choice, and his anatomy then what does he truly have left?

He’s spent so much time trying to be perfect for you because he feels like love isn’t something that is to be given but something that is earned. There are ten years of his life that he still hasn’t gotten off his chest and even still as Robin, I doubt he holds much of a choice - still he’s tied to some sort of destiny, and at the end of the Ra’s Al Ghul Resurrection event Bruce mentions that Damian deserves some time not to having a destiny. When does having a path pathed for you stops becoming liberating and starts becoming suffocating?

I seriously hope that somewhere down the line Damian can make a choice based on no hand that’s been dealt to him but the choice he made all by himself and then he owns it.
