Blood is thicker than water.
This is a popular saying on earth. It has been around longer than anyone can remember. A mother says it to her child when they have their first heart break. A father says it to his child who chose their friends over their family. There are a million different ways to use that saying, but like most sayings, there is more to it.
When in Rome.
When in Rome do as the Roman’s do.
Curiosity killed the cat
Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back.
An eye for an eye.
An eye for an eye only makes the whole world blind.
Blood is thicker than water.
The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
So what does this mean?
The blood of the covenant. The blood of the covenant is the power of friendship. The power of a found family. The ‘I chose you to be my sister/brother.’ The ‘you are the aunt of my child even when their biological aunt isn’t.’ And inexplicably, this family is sometimes stronger than the ties of blood.
The water of the womb. The family you were born into. The family that may not have wanted you. The family that loves you so much they annoy the hell out of you. The family you cannot choose. The family that becomes the blood of the covenant because you both make the effort to love each other.
So what does this mean?
The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb.
It means the family you choose, your friends, your significant other, your frenemies, the family that will stick with you through even the worst moments of your life, doesn’t have to be biological. It can be biological, it can include every member of your biological family, but when it doesn’t, when it’s your friends from elementary and high school, those friends are better than the water of the womb.

Honour
"What is he doing?!"
"He's taking off his helmet."
Human crew mate Gabi takes a long look at dhym, blinking almost as confused as Gaalg feels. Dhy really doesn't understand how they can be so calm when their human crew mate Lucas just took off his helmet mid duel. He could've won then and there, his enemy's helmet helplessly flung across the arena, but instead of taking the chance, he takes off his own.
Humans being reckless are a known fact, but this is breaking all records.
"Oh!" Gabi's eyes light up as if they suddenly understand Gaalg's worry "I get it. You're wondering why Lucas took off his helmet"
"Yes! Why would he do that?! That will only make him more vulnerable!"
"It's a matter of honour"
"... Honour? What honour is there in being vulnerable?"
"What honour is there in attacking the defenseless? This is a duel, not a brawl, it's honourable to fight on same ground, to make the fight fair"
Humans are beyond reckless, Gaalg hears instead, they're well into ethical madness.
Alien then realizes "Wait...humans also feed family and friends. Jim ensures I don't skip meals. Am I...family?"
"Am I family?"
Jim looked across the table and smiled as he passed a few more rashers of bacon over to Chix.
"We've served together for over eight years. You're the godfather of my son."
Jim's toddler, Charlie, sat on the floor playing a simple game of trying to grab Chix's tail as its tip wriggled back and forth.
"You helped Akiko get to the med bay when she went into labour."
Akiko was in the kitchenette area of the quarters, pouring herself another cup of coffee, "I think you were more scared than I was," she laughed to herself.
Chix almost shuddered at the memory. Egg-laying was so much more civilised. There were fewer fluids involved.
If Jim noticed Chix's discomfort, he said nothing. "You've saved my life, at least half a dozen times, I gave you an open invitation to come over to breakfast every morning, last year we went a whole parsec off-course to get you back home in time to see your oldest hatchling get married."
Chix nodded, "screw the company and its schedules," he muttered under his breath. It had been Jim's mantra during the entire trip.
Jim shook his head, that same smile still on his face. "And you only ask now, NOW, after all that, if you're family?"
Akiko joined them at the table, giving her husband a little kiss on the cheek as she sat down, "Chix," she said with all seriousness, "you were family the day you came aboard."
Chix almost felt like crying. Though that might have been because Charlie had finally caught his tail. The little one had a strong grip.
Humans are space orcs: The Hidden People
When humans first joined the Galactic Union, there was chaos. Mind you, the humans themselves did not mean any harm to the rest of us, and the majority were actually quite pleasant to be around. But their nature, the way they evolved, simply clashed with those of most other species.
The human mouth was a particularly challenging hurdle to overcome— their saliva was very nearly venomous from the amount of bacteria it held, and the same bacteria could be flung through the air with a simple exhale. Their smile, too. It cause many to be paralyzed with fear, and this would not bode well for peace talks. But humans were understanding, more than anyone expected. They saw what they caused and acted to prevent it. They wore masks and muzzles so as to not frighten or infect. This species changed an entire facet of their behavior to better exist among us in a way no other people had. But even more amazing, this was not the last time they did so.
Their hide was covered in bacteria as well, and the oils their skin produced could burn some of us. So they covered themselves with long-sleeved garments and respected boundaries, though we never asked them to.
Their eyes being foreword facing and the fact that their pupils contracted and expanded caused a similar reaction to their smiles— unrestrained horror in the smaller species, and fear in the rest. So the humans covered their eyes with glass lenses or transparent cloth. Again, we never asked them to.
Their hair, or the fur atop their heads, held oils as well. Not only that, but some species who had particularly porous flesh could have hair embedded in their bodies for weeks if they came in contact with it. So the humans covered their heads with hats or helmets.
Their smell was very nearly noxious to some, nearing on deadly. To others it caused an opioid-like effect if inhaled. So the humans masked their scent with perfumes and scented apparel.
The humans effectively hid themselves away in order to meet us and befriend us. No one expected this carnivorous, primitive race to humble and restrict themselves so totally and completely in the name of exploration. But they did, and this is what sold them to many skeptical species. Their efforts to integrate themselves into our society was so great that no one could reasonably doubt their intentions for peace.
After some years of this though, there came a time in our galaxy where you had to go to their home planet to actually see an uncovered human. That is not to say their species was not rampant in the galaxy, for it certainly was— they expanded faster than any other species had, but no one ever saw them for what they were. And few were so curious that they risked their life for a glimpse of an uncovered human. I myself only have stories and pictures to go off of, like the test of the intelligent universe. But from what I hear, it is nothing compared to the real thing.
And there is a level of detachment because of it, a sadness in the separation I did not foresee until I befriend a human. Not being to see see them, to understand them as acutely as they can me, makes me feel as if I am failing them as a companion and ally. But I know that it is better like this, though I often wonder if the humans regret not being able to truly be themselves around us. Maybe one day I shall see them for what they are, though I think I may have to be on my deathbed before I do so. Just to be safe.

“Why are we even here?”
At the front of the room, The Grizzled Tesraki Bridge officer took his seat. One of his ears was partially mangled, and his dark Ochre fur stuck up in strange places only adding to his grizzled appearance.
In the front row, the young Tesraki that had spoken tapped a foot impatiently against the floor.
