i know there’s a lot of controversy over the smiley face on cal’s hand and whether it was a cut or a drawing, but let’s act like it was a drawing.

imagine cal being bored in class and writing random things on his hands and his arms. he’s been sent to the office for it multiple times; they usually just tell him to wash it off and stop being a distraction or else they’ll call his parents.

after a while, cal gets tired of getting singled out and having to carry his stuff down to the office, so he stops drawing on his hands and begins doodling on his jeans. when he’s at home he sews cool patches into the denim and draws the weirdest pictures. he even lets andre write his initials on them and draw one or two pictures. andre would draw more if he could, but both of the boys know he’s shit at art.

he’ll sit in class with his knees tucked up against his chest and draw little spirals and faces onto his shins. he mainly does it in science and math, classes he knows andre understands so he can just get notes from him later. his parents get him a sketchbook, hoping it’ll stop him from marking on his clothes, but it doesn’t. he just starts doodling in both.

andre answering his home phone and having to hear the worst news he’s ever received in his life.

cal committed. he didn’t wait until zero day. he didn’t warn andre. he didn’t do it with andre.

when andre hears the news, he drops the phone, listening to the plastic break as it hits the floor. he looks at the kitchen table, in his back pack, and in his jacket, but he cannot find his keys anywhere. fuck it. andre opens the door and begins running to the gabriel house.

his legs are sore from track and workouts, but andre can’t feel them. he feels like he’s flying. he’s getting too close to the sun, burning and burning until his wings completely melt.

when he gets to the gabriel house, about eleven blocks from the kriegman house, cal’s siblings are sat in the yard with some police officers while his parents are stood in each other’s arms while talking to another officer. his mom looks destroyed. his dad keeps glancing at the front door, waiting and hoping for his oldest son to stand up and walk out, begging for this entire thing to be a joke.

andre runs past them; he pushes officers away from him and almost punches one square in the nose. he makes it into the house and into the hallway that holds cal’s room. he can see inside. there is blood everywhere. cal’s face is destroyed.

despite all the destruction, andre swears he can feel cal’s heart beating, even from a distance. he feels it in the floor, in his chest, and in his head. he can hear it louder than his own heart.

after all of his running, andre collapses. his knees hit the ground with such force that they might break. he curls into himself, holding himself in an embrace that is impossibly tight.

the only things that stay still are andre’s eyes. everything else is moving around him and he’s shaking, but his eyes are still trained on the boy on the ground in front of him. the sight burns itself into andre’s brain. andre begs himself to look away, even clawing at his cheeks, but he genuinely cannot. it is horrifying.

in the moment, no one knows that andre will soon follow cal’s fate. they don’t know that the boys will share a wake. they don’t know that they will be buried next to each other only days apart.

andre would drive cal to the smoke shop, but he’d never go in. when cal gets back in the car, andre immediately asks what flavors he got. if it’s one andre doesn’t like, he’ll just pout on the way home. there’s been multiple times when andre has had to pull over because he tried a new flavor and had a coughing fit because he hated it.

right handed andre vs left handed cal.

andre constantly tells cal to sit on the left side of him, getting annoyed when their hands bump when they’re eating or doing school work. sometimes cal forgets or purposefully sits on the wrong side and ends up knocking food off andre’s fork or hitting his arm and messing up his writing.

cal complains about how desks and other trivial things aren’t made for him. andre just tells him to shut up and jokingly calls him freakish. he loves telling cal random facts about left handed people, especially how they were accused of devil worship and persecuted in olden days. cal doesn’t even listen to him anymore.

there is one thing about their differing dominant hands that the boys both love, though.

they’re able to hold hands easily; andre on the left and cal on the right. their fingers intertwine like they were made for one another. there’s an awkward fumble to hold hands while andre’s driving, but they always figure it out.

when they sleep in the same bed, they fall asleep holding hands. when they go to the movies, they hold hands. (always closer to the end of the movie, though. cal has to eat popcorn first.) when they’re talking and having game night with family, andre’s hand sneaks under the table and holds the hand of the boy sitting next to him. cal is quick to return the gesture, squeezing andre’s hand tightly.
