No Problem It Was A Pretty Long Post Anyways =)The Abuse Apologism In The Fanbase Is Honestly Gigantic,
No problem it was a pretty long post anyways =) The abuse apologism in the fanbase is honestly gigantic, it is frightening.
And thank you for answering and clearing it up, because as you said, it did read it as a writing issue.
And this fandom is known for sending death threats which is under no circumstances okay, so I tend to be very cautious about talking to people about the story, but you sounded reasonable and I was curious about a different viewpoint on the topic.
Because I luckly have no history of family abuse, so it is something I am not exprienced with and it’s interesting to get some insight about a topic from someone with knowledge about it. Not that I would anybody to have experienced any kind of abuse but the world is often pretty shitty and it’s important to see the side of those who are actually affected by it.
I think on some degree a lot of fans did get through the beginning where bnha seemed rather basic in the regards of who is good and who is bad, more a black and white story before it developed into the complex work that exists now.
And this is after all not some kids show where at the end of the episode we get a person saying: and the moral of the story is...
So it’s a lot of thinking between the lines and greyness within characters, which I absoluty love from a writing perspective, but it does give the way to have characters that hit a little to close to home. That are so close to real people we know that it hurts.
For me that would be someone like Catelyn Stark in asoiaf, because her treatment of Jon Snow constantly reminds me of my own family issues. That doesn’t make her a bad character, but it makes me uncomfortable everytime I read her chapters and Jon comes up.
And (correct me if I am wrong) I suppose with you (or other abuse victims) it goes a similar way, that the topic hit’s a little to close to home and you are reminded on what the real world is like and your own issues.
That of course shows good writing, but it does dull the experience in a very personal way.
And since I read through the leak summary (303), I can definitly say that some characters I’d like to punch in the face or at least send to a therapist, but it still atones to good and consistent character writing.
As the story as a whole, we don’t have an ending yet but since the topic of a dysfunctional societal system is increadibly big, especially in the current ark, I think he does definitly not apologize abuse and shows that those characters who do support Endevour no matter what are part of the problem of said society, as they are so deeply rooted in it, they don’t even see the problem.
So I am rather postiv that this won’t turn into:” it’s ok as long as you decide to get better” and more of the realsitic somber tone of: “you should always try to better yourself, but this will never erase the past”.
Thanks for the answer and the insight of the topic, have a great night (at least it’s night here in Germany).
i am so ready to just drop the mha manga. i hate how much i care about the todoroki’s (save enji) because if i didn’t care so much about them i would be long fucking gone from this hell hole. the abuse apologism never fucking stops. it would be one thing if it was just the fans because that’s always gonna happen ive seen it happen with every piece of media ever involving abuse but the fact that the abuse apologism is in the actual story itself? while also trying to convince you it’s NOT abuse apologism? it’s fucking exhausting. i hate it here.

I just had to laugh at your post, Spinner is my favourite character and you clearly like the guy too, but I guess you’re not a manga reader, since chapter 220:
Pretty sure he’d killing you if you said he’s a different species.
Imagine: Being Spinner's species and him falling for you after seeing you for the first time
Also if you consider what Tomura does for his group alone he is very friendly. Especially if you think about the fact that AFO had his claws on him for most of his life and he was abused by his father before that and he never went completly inhumane.
Especially during Deika (after spending 1.5 months fighting Machia with the Lov) you can see that he is very human at core, something the hero society and the pro heros on top don’t see at all.
He actually cares for his group, wanting their needs to me met:
Like he just came out of a fight that left him with half of a hand and the first thing he thinks of is getting the Lov into a fincancially better situation and Compress his sushi (and Toga her new coat). And even during the fight he cares for Spinner, in contrast to someone like Overhaul who literally uses his own men like shields.
They are in the middle of a messy battle and Tomura is definitly sleep deprived since Machia only slept for 3 hours at a time, we saw him kill dozen people easily during the fight but he always stops his decay before it can reach Spinner, even if he isn’t in his direct line of sight and asks for his well-beeing.
He compliments Twice (who he never forced to try to clone himself and was never mean to him if things didn’t go as Tomura wanted) his friend for being able to finally make his own clones.
To think that someone who started out getting raised by a physical and psychological abusive father and both an enabling mother and grandparents that got taken in by a man who groomed him to become a weapon of mass destruction is still so kind and caring about his companions is incredible. None of that came completly from the outside, the outside worked against him becoming such a nice person given hatred over and over again but the more away he got from AFO the more we saw his human side and that he is actually deep down a good person, that just got abused to the point where he wants to destory everything. Well everything that isn’t what his allies want.
I think that what makes Shigaraki’s backstory so much worst than everyone else’s is the absolute lack of choice and consent.
He never had any choice at any points, he was used and manipulated from beginning to end. It doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have any responsibility or agency in the story, but he is the only villain who never CHOSE to become a villain in the first place. Dabi, Toga and everyone else made the choice to go against the law at some point but Shigaraki didn’t. And sure, we can speculate that he would have become a villain even without AFO, but the terrible truth is that we will never know, because he was trapped since the very beginning. And even now as he is finally starting to doubt AFO’s words and influence, he is physically and literally being possessed by him, the ultimate form violation and manipulation.
For me, this is the true horror, this is the true tragedy, and this why he is so much more compelling than everyone else.
A bit off topic but it just makes me think about all the hate Sansa Stark is getting.
Tyrion murders a girl, rapes another and laughs at a brutally murderd women? -cool.
Sandor follows orders and kills a little kid, cutting him into pieces until his father can’t recognize him anymore? -no problem. Theon kills and rapes. -totally fine (the worst thing he did was clearly betraying Robb, not you know actually getting two children and their mother brutally murderd or anything). Oberyn forcefully takes Obara from her mother and just let’s the woman drink herself to death weeping for her child? -fine.
Benjen never telling 14 year old Jon what the Night’s Watch is really like? -no big deal. Stannis kills his little brother with a shaddow? -just peachy.
But sure the 11 year old who didn’t want to move away from her crush and told his mom is the worst person that ever lived in Westeros and deserves more hate than all of those men combined.
And I like those characters, they are so well written, Theon is my favourite asoiaf character but boy has he done some f-d up stuff and Sansa is still getting more hate.
people will be like “i love redemption arcs” but hate characters who have ever done bad things before. what are they being redeemed from?
This is the funniest thing ever, I love it!

I think this might have to do with a couple of factors. Fuyumi got the least abuse directly, she didn’t have to train like Toya and Shoto and she didn’t get the alienation for her looks from Rei like Natsuo and Shoto did and she didn’t get physically assaulted like Rei. She mostly got stuck with getting neglected by her father and having to watch her father abuse other family members physically and Toya did not talk to her about his inner feelings like he did to Natsuo. And that is of course abuse, none of this should happen to any child, but she seemed to have more of a childhood than any other Todoroki child, so she is the most likely to forgive their abuser than any other family member. Fuyumi became a teacher, she has shown to be a very forgiving nature for the sake of the hopeful note of things changeing for the better. Image a: “forgive your friend because he stole your toy and apologized because he means it” background for years of adulthood. Of course this isn’t the same as fogiving your abuser, but this mentality will get through to you if you spend years by teaching it to children.
Fuyumi was a child when most of the abuse happend, she does not have a objective opinion on this. Shoto doesn’t realise he’s been abused yet because he was in the middle of it, he might have thought that it was normal. And Fuyumi getting the least abused might not think she was abused at all.
I think she lacks the understanding of the inner thoughts and experiences her brothers have. Natuso is privy to Toyas toughts and Shoto begins to understand what happend to Toya (noting that he could have become like him if it wasn’t for Midoria) faster because he shared a good portion of the same abuse from their father but Fuyumi doesn’t have any of that.
As a child she couldn’t understand why Toya wanted to train so much because she was never born with an agenda of becoming a pro hero. Natuso and Shoto were born because Toyas qurik wasn’t what Endevour wanted. Fuyumi was born because they thought another child would be good to have around (not a good reason to have a child either, but it’s longs better than breeding the perfect kid), she didn’t have that intense pressure that her siblings had, because she fullfilled her family position as Endevour thought of it.
So I think she just generally lacks understanding the situation because of her position and involvement in it, so she can’t care or respect her brothers feelings because she can’t understand them. They are all to involved into the situation to get an objective view and Fuyumi works with her teacher coping mechanism of forgive and forget because that seems to work for her but she can’t understand that it doesn’t work for others.
That said, I’d love to see the Todoroki siblings and their mother going to help Toya while Hawks and Jeanist try to kill him and Endevour landing on his ass once again realising that his colleagues are out to kill his son instead of helping him, you know like a real hero should.
I’ve been severely disappointed in how Rei has been wrote too 😫 I would think a mother would want to stand by her child more than the husband who made the household toxic with his abuse & neglect 🤷♀️ what’s disappointed you about Fuyumi? I know it really disappointed me with her giving Shouto’s number to Endeavor like ‘damn that’s rude’! But what’s disappointed you?
Overall, I just find it annoying that all this time Fuyumi has been the person that supposedly wants the whole family to be together and happy and all of that, but I haven’t seen her have that energy with Touya?
Her brothers obviously don’t want to be around Endvr, yet she often convinces them to have dinner together. She simply doesn’t respect their feelings and while a pacifist approach is great in a lot of situations, trying to remain neutral or whatever does more harm than good here.
So far, I just haven’t seen her show any signs of actually caring about her brothers’ feelings and respecting them, and it’s just disappointing to have so many characters be all talk but nothing more. Idk, maybe in the future, she will understand that she should take a side - that of her brothers and not Endvr - but so far she seems to want to remain neutral, which is the same as siding with Endvr and being against her brothers, especially Dabi.
