I Had A Hard Time Grasping It Until I Read A Good Reframe Of Privilege. White Privilege Isnt Bonus Points,

I had a hard time grasping it until I read a good reframe of privilege. White privilege isn’t ‘bonus points’, it’s not additive. It’s that the rules of the game, as we are sold it, actually apply and aren’t changed. They don’t seemingly randomly become extra rules to ensure you don’t get any points or lose the points you gain. Privilege is a failure to subtract. Anyone without ‘white privilege’ (or ‘privilege’ of any kind) is constantly fighting against increasingly absurd restrictions and subtractions to their ability to function. Race is one set of ‘yeah, but not for X’ additional ‘rules of functioning’ and gender is another.

It’s animal farm’s classic “all animals are equal but some are more equal than others”. We set the starting line in on place then say anyone who isn’t white has to take a step back. Anyone who isn’t male has to take a step back. Anyone who isn’t rich has to take two steps back. Then we act all shocked when some rich white dude wins the race.

White privilege is to misogyny what male privilege is to racism. White privilege AND male privilege exist. Racism AND misogyny exist.

white privilege exists AND misogyny exists and white women experience both of these at the same time. Like neither one cancels the other out. Why is this so difficult for people to understand

how long it takes to regrow myelin It does not. The myelin sheath does not ever regrow. At best your brain rewires in order to allow some increase in functionality. Much harder for this to happen outside your brain as there are less nerves to rewire to (one might say next to impossible).

things you can use in place of cultural monsters

Can’t use golems in your fantasy world because they’re beings that belong to Judaism and you aren’t Jewish? Try using elementals!

Can’t use w*nd*goag in your story because they’re monsters from Native beliefs and you aren’t Native? Try wraiths or forest spirits!

Can’t use Skinwalkers, either? How about changelings, The Thing-type aliens or faeries?

Don’t want to use Christian biblical angels? Try eldritch monstrosities from another world.

Don’t want to namedrop La Llorona, Hachisukisama or the Cupecabrah? How about old-fashioned undead, zombies or ghosts?

Just because certain supernatural beings are only for certain groups, doesn’t mean you have to limit your monsters! There’s plenty of demographic-neutral alternatives to famous creatures that you can use without culturally appropriating or disrespecting people’s beliefs.

i’m gonna make a movie where two normal ladies fall in love. everything’s chill, no age gap, they’re both out of the closet, their families love them, everything’s fine. the catch is that one lady has a cat and the other lady never figured out what the cat’s name was cause the Owner Lesbian ALWAYS uses a dumb nickname and now it’s been three years and they’re getting married and it’s too late to just ask
