Past the Burning Times

Linger near me now. I am lost in the dreams of an age.

Color and sound don’t visit the souls of the wretched.

That is for prettier things than me, castoff surrogate of hate.

Remember the girl at the back of the room, drawn and pale?

I am that Raven girl, wings clipped fast at her sides.

Partition off a room, an island in the middle of the sea.

We’ll abide there, me and mine, until a better time comes.

When people can see what’s more than seems, and love is the letter of the day.

Path to Partway Done

Devour me completely. Do not distinguish between a sip and a swallow.

I am a gallon of blood and a pound of flesh.

This is the price on my head, the weight and feel of my freedom.

Beyond these bars lie things unknown, regions as yet unexplored.

But there’s a debt to be paid and penance to be done.

Who would feel these fears for me, wither in the heat of their anguish?

My heart is a long way from home, and hope is still two closed doors behind.

Frustrated, every time I have to tell you to turn off the faucet, the lights, the burners on the stove.

Constant arguments about how clean is clean, exactly? They’re just a few scattered bits of clothes; what’s the fuss about?
