I always thought it was a fandom decided thing? with all the religious trauma he's gone through, yk? what, with Cas calling him an abomination and all the angels hating him at the beginning. especially with him being a little religious. and then everything with Lucifer? and everything with the demon blood, too. like, he is a bit unclean, and there's always been religious notes to it

yes, sam winchester is my favourite character and always will be. the boy who didn't choose to be bad. he is unclean since birth, it is written on his destiny to be the original evil and he manages to avoid it. he literally made himself be good against all heavens and hells. isn’t it fascinating to watch him in later seasons? his calm demeanor after years of running in circles. after years of tearing himself apart. because of things he did and didn’t, because of witnessing how his life has been torn to shreds. he just wanted to go to college at the end of the day. he wanted to be his own person. and his closest people made him feel ashamed of it. after all of it he chose family anyway. family that tried to change him to the core. he made peace with this life he tried to escape and found forgiveness. he managed to find happiness, and sympathy and hope. he managed to have enough for two. isn’t it pure devotion and goodness?
