The first verse that stopped me in my tracks when I was rereading the Bible as an exchristian was Romans 7 verse 18. "For I know nothing good dwells in me."

I read that verse and I grabbed a pen and I underlined it and wrote in the margin, "For I know that good dwells in me."

It felt so powerful, to finally speak back after hearing these messages so passively before. And I was able to see the seeds of my harmful core beliefs in these verses: my learned helplessness, my low self esteem, my depression, and my fear. And I just kept going, underlining and rewriting verses that I thought were harmful. And those verses and the notes in the margin of my childhood bible eventually became this account.

I’ve been running this blog since 2020 and it’s been a wonderful experience, connecting with other people who are deconstructing or deconverting from Christianity, sharing our joy and our grief, trading tips on dealing with evangelizers, and recommending authors and other creators who are doing great things in this space.

I try to write what would have been helpful to me early on in my deconstruction. I know how difficult it is retrain our brains to stop reinforcing painful patterns. Because letting go of harmful Christian behaviors is in some ways harder than letting go of the beliefs themselves.

Conservatives have, 10,000%, wrapped up a bunch of truly awful, harmful relationship behaviors, and feverishly labeled it "tradition"…

It's like…."Grandpa, 'tradition' is food, clothing, holidays, folktales, music, language, and things of that cultural nature. What you have ahold of there is lack of self-awareness, consistent consent and boundary violations, and probable jail time. 😭 Now, let's get you to a therapist!"

Reminder:

If bigots really were "naturally superior", then they wouldn't have to oppress anyone.

It's a shame that their beliefs -- that, "only those who are 'superior' should be able to live and thrive" -- drive them to then have to try to be in a superior position at all times….in order to stroke their own egos, and to soothe the deep insecurities that they themselves have made insurmountable and untenable, by endlessly pursuing vectors of pointless domination in the hopes that they can convince everyone to let them hoard the plentiful resources which they refuse to peacefully share.

The world would be so much better if everyone was allowed to just live, and be who they are, and be allowed to be comfortable with each other; without breaking their bodies and minds and spirits to "earn" the birthright of existence and thriving which the Earth simply offers us for free.

The very roots of lawns are classist.

After the first monarchs (i.e. invader/warmonger/conquerors) took the lands and forests away from the common folk of europe, where the common man had previously subsisted very well and sustainably for hundreds if not thousands of years, the kings and nobility carved up the land among themselves and then razed it.

They usually planted only grass and maybe exotic flowers.

Because it was a "sign of wealth and nobility" to have a HUGE expanse of lawn with no edible crops or much of anything on it...to have a whole ton of land that 'wasn't being used'.

It signified that you had control over enough of the population to force them to grow and graze food FOR you, while you concerned yourself mostly with pleasure and parties (which is why monarchs were so fucking bored all the time!😂) ....mostly turning their spirits, bodies, and minds into a bowls of spiteful mush....

So, yeah. Lawns were not only racist, but a mindless, pointless, destructive, and unsustainable 'status symbol' (as most symbols of status usually are).

Makes me wonder how the ACTUAL original wildernesses in Europe were like, before all the serfdom nonsense?
