Hi Simon!

Hi Simon!

I wanted to ask, how's Taka doing? I've always been curious about that bird of yours, and it seems very interesting, I'd love to hear more about it!

~Sincerely,

That Ace.

That Ace,

Taka is well, thank you. Since you are curious, I suppose I could tell you a spell about her. She is a Eurasian Sparrowhawk, and Primarily feasts upon birds, but small rodents will also do.

I say she, which I have determined based on her size and plumage, but she has never laid eggs so I may be mistaken. if accurate, then she is slightly smaller then average, but also faster.

She is deeply intelligent, and has always found her way back to me. I feared when I got her that she would leave once she could hunt for herself, but as often as she leaves, she always comes back.

I allow her free range of everywhere I go, the only exception is if she requires medical attention, which is blessedly rare. She does not care for the anklets, jesses, and hoods typically involved in falconry, so I defer to her preference when possible. This also means should I displease her, she can go. I do not truly think of her as my bird, but as my companion, staying only so long as she is willing.

Perhaps sometime I will tell you how she came to be so.

Dear Prosecutor Blackquill,

I’m thinking of getting a pet bird, is there a particular breed you would recommend? :]

Fine Reader,

A noble goal. there a number of birds that may be good companions for you, and which would be best for you depends on the accommodations you can make for the animal, and for what you are looking for in your companion. Personally, I am keen on Taka, who is capable of taking care of herself, but you should know that legally she is not mine, as if I were a registered falconer, a number of things would have to change. I have been given certain permissions to allow Taka to remain by my side, an uncommon occurrence.

Good Birds for beginners include Budgies, who are quite social, as well as rather small, and do well in a cage so long as they have time outside of it as well. They live about ten years on average, meaning they will be your companion for the better part of a decade.

Cockatiels are another fine choice, though larger then Budgies, they like people and tend to socialize with as many as possible. they live on average twenty years, assuming they receive proper care.

If you do indeed with to enter the world of falconry, I recommend looking for someone who can teach you in person. Taka was a rare find, and I do not know what your local regulations state, nor the penalties for not following them. I can tell you about the birds themselves, but they are a harder bird to care for then others, and off-putting to some.

Other common pets include Love Birds, Parrotlets, and Canaries. Ultimately however, it will be hinging on what you do to prepare for them, including the research done. Remember, you are becoming responsible for their very lives. Hold them carefully, teach them well, learn their language. They will reciprocate, if treated correctly.

Carefully,

Dear Simon,

I saw your recent reply to a question about Bobby Fulbright, and you said you live with him.

do you enjoy each other's company?

Dear Reader,

Yes, we do. He is an honest, decent person in a world that rewards neither. He has grown since I met him first as well, and is a fine man to spend time with. I am grateful to have met him.

As for why he enjoys spending time with me, I am uncertain. He has several stated reasons, but I would expect I was aggravating enough to deter him. Still, I am perhaps less difficult then when I was incarcerated, and he claimed to enjoy my company then as well. A mystery, that as I was truly trying to be unlikable at that time. Another virtue of his, or mere foolishness, I cannot say.

He is also a...comforting presence. He claims I am as well. Perhaps the bonds of trauma will tie us together indefinitely. I rather think so.

A blessing. Rare though they are.

Did you ever meet the real Bobby Fulbright?

Apologies for the lengthy delay in responding, reader. I was unsure how much to say before consulting with the man himself.

Yes. I had known Fulbright for a few months before the Phantom caught him, and reconnected after the man was rescued. He is now one of my housemates.

The man suffered a great deal, apparently being kept as a source of information, questioned repeatedly on a number of topics. He is doing much better now.
