This whole thing is a misery.

Every corner of your room is in a pit of darkness.

Curtains closed, lights are off, door is locked.

To say that you’re in pain is just an understatement.

You’re in a state of agony.

Your blood was already draining out of your body, making you pale and weak. You couldn’t even move on your bed without feeling blood gushing out.

As if that wasn’t enough suffering, you feel too nauseous and sick to even do anything.

Have you eaten? Crossed out.

Have you freshen up? Crossed out.

Do you feel like vomiting? Check.

Do you feel every part of your body is sore? Check.

The immense wave of pain of your period cramps was your last straw. You were sure enough that you are dying.

You grunt in pain, moving your hand from hugging your pillow, to clutching your stomach.

Until you heard a knock on your door…

“Hey, are you in there?”

You couldn’t even answer. The pain from your cramps was overwhelming your whole body.

You heard the knock again. There was a pause for a moment, then you hear him talk, again.

“I’m coming in”

You hear the twist of the doorknob, followed by the creaks of your door being opened—then closed.

“It took me a while to get all the things you needed, sorry.”

You lift your head from your pillow to look at him.

Your eyes are slightly blinded as the lights are already opened but then there here he was, standing near your bed, holding paper bags with what it seems like it’s filled with necessities.

“Mui…”

You try to stand up from you bed with the remaining strength you have. Muichiro put down all the paper bags on your bedside table, proceeding to help you sit on your bed.

“Sorry, I messaged you knowing you were out.” You said to him with worn out voice, in which he only gave you a peck on the forehead in response.

“Drink some water first, you look dehydrated…”

He went back to the table to unpack all the things he has gotten for you.

Truth be told, you get a little worried during times like this. Knowing your boyfriend, he tends to forget things most of the time.

With his forgetful persona, you sometimes wonder how he still manage to always know what to do when you are in a state like this.

Like how he remembers the meals you want…

“Here… This was your craving a week ago, but eat up, you look paler.”

How he remembers all the things you prefer…

“I’ve bought you pads… Without the wings, since that brings you discomfort.”

How he remembers the things that would make you feel better…

“I also got you painkillers and hot compress, these would make you feel at ease.”

Or how he even remembers all the things you love…

“Oh, and here’s a bag full of your favorite snacks, too. Eat as much as you’d like.”

Gestures of Muichiro like this really makes you question it.

Maybe because having done this before, he already knows what to do?

Not that you complain, no.

You really do appreciate every little thing he does and all the things he brought for you.

But that’s not what you need right now.

“Muichiro.”

You called out his name, which made him halt from unpacking. He looks at you with that wondering gleam in his eyes, as if waiting for a reason on why you just called him.

Giving him a faint smile, you pat the empty space besides you.

“Cuddles, please?”

He let out an airy ‘huh’ as his mouth went slightly agape. He put down the chocolate pocky he was just about to show you, then right away went under the covers with you, obliging your request.

You immediately hugged him the moment he was on your bed, snuggling your face on his chest.

Laying on his top, you feel his hand rubbing circles on your back, while the other playing with your hair.

“Missed you all day, Mui.”

You hum at the amount of comfort he’s giving you right now. Definitely an infinite times better than what you were feeling earlier.

“Sorry it took me some time to get here. I wanted to ensure I got everything right for you.”

He feels you smiling at his chest, then gently shaking your head to reassure him that you didn’t mind at all.

“How are you feeling now?” He asked.

“Better than ever, now that you’re here” You hugged him a little more tightly.

“Sure? You look so fatigued earlier when I entered your room.”

Then, you look up to him with a frown.

You sure do have the tendencies to change emotions quickly during your period. Muichiro couldn’t believe that. He just felt you smile, then the next second you look like you’re about to shed tears.

He was right. You can feel your mouth trembling and eyes a little watery. Mood swings are still part of your suffering. Unfortunately, you both have to deal with it.

Then you completely broke out in front of him.

“Everything was so painful! My head hurts so much, my thighs are so sore I can’t move, I could feel the vomit right in my throat, and it felt like I got punched with a hammer with these cramps! I could feel my soul giving up and dying, you know?”

You sob out to him.

He adjusted the position you two were in. You, now laying on your side, being cradled by him.

All he could do was listen to your little rants how you loathe this period week, not knowing what to reply anyway. So, he just hushed you in between sobs, wiping the tears that are falling from your eyes.

You stopped crying, “Ugh… I hate having my period…” burying your face back on his chest out of frustration.

He caress the back of your head, massaging it. You can hear the sound of his heartbeat, bringing comfort enough to close your eyes.

The both of you were like this for some moments, until he taps your shoulder.

“We should get up now, you need to eat to regain strength. I’ll help you tidy up too.”

Muichiro tried to squirm from your hug, in attempts to get up, which only made you tighten the hug once more, not wanting to let go of him.

He taps your shoulder again. Making his voice much more softer for you, “We need to get you freshen up, love. You’re such in a messy state, I can’t bear to se-“

“Can we just stay like this for a little more, please?”

All it took was one plead, and he didn’t waste any time giving in to your request.

He hugged you tightly back, and you entangle your legs with his, getting comfortable on bed with him.

Unbeknownst to you, Muichiro kept reminding himself that he would write down a note on this in his little memo containing all about you—your favorites, what you love, what you dislike, and so on—in his phone, as he shower you with affection.

The voices in his head over and over reminding him that in some situations…

All you needed was his presence.

You and Muichiro snuggled longer than “a little more”.

But both of you paid no mind and said nothing about it.

After all, his warmth is a better comfort than any painkillers nor hot compress.

the odds are never going to be on your side. you knew that very well when you got paired with your biggest academic rival, levi.

You’ve once known that fate, is a tricky thing.

It is something that is created for someone, or something. Despite any other circumstances, it is meant to happen.

What you also know is that fate is having its best time fooling you around. Making all odds turn its back against you.

Like how your alarm got off at 6:30 when you’re certain you’ve set it at 5:30, making you late for your first class.

How you managed to switch sugar with salt, making you have the saltiest coffee known to mankind.

Or how you tripped over nothing, making your essay papers that was due, dissolve in the water puddle while on your way to school.

You were certain that fate is laughing at you when your science professor paired you with Levi for a report presentation the same day.

That day couldn’t have gotten any worse.

You’ve always seen him as a rival in terms of academics. Regardless of the fact that you don’t interact with him much, you’re sure he sees you the same way you do with him.

Even though it’s infuriating that he was indeed better than you in some certain aspects, you try not hold any personal grudges against him.

Instead, you make him the reason to strive for the best and stay on top.

Your professor gave the whole class the free will to choose any topic, as long as it is still related to science.

It is to be presented the day before your final exams for the last quarter of the last semester starts.

Meaning, you have ten weeks for this project.

Also meaning ten weeks working with Levi Ackerman.

You slumped heavily on your table with a strained sigh, still recovering from the unfortunate train of events earlier, as your professor gave your class the remaining time to brainstorm for the project.

“You look shitty.”

“Did the god of cleanliness have finally decided to grace me with his presence?”

Great.

He pulled up a chair besides you, as you took out a paper to write down notes of ideas.

There’s some bickering here and there when he started to bring up that one history test he was one point higher than you.

It was to spite you, obviously, but you bit back.

So, you brought up the time when you won first place against him in a quiz bee.

Even with arguments, you both managed to talk about the presentation nonetheless.

Surprisingly, you and Levi were already thinking of the same topic, so it was easier to agree with each other.

What are the odds of that?

“So, astronomy it is? Final?” you asked your partner.

“No objections but, we still have to be more specific.”

You try to think of something. For a moment, nothing’s coming in your mind, until, “What if we do a report about meteors, asteroids, and comets?”

“You like those shit?”

“It’s intriguing! Plus, half of our class probably doesn’t know its differences. We can add that to the significance of our report.”

“Fair enough.”

“Uhh, here.” You torn a piece of paper and gave it to him. “Just write your email address. I’ll start our document and I’ll forward it to you.”

He writes on the paper then handed it to you, “The sooner we’re done, the better.”

“Right.”

You thought that maybe working with Levi wasn’t going to be bad after all.

But your bubbles soon burst the moment he entered the café you both agreed to meet at.

“Did you receive the document I emailed you?” You ask, looking up at him from your laptop.

“I did. What’s with the document name? At least try to be professional with this.”

You looked back on your laptop, having no clue what he’s talking about.

Surely enough, the document is named something rather silly.

You edited it immediately, jabbering as you do so, “Oh god, I didn’t mean to! It was late when I started this, I typed whatever came into mind—“

“And you couldn’t think of anything better?” He sat down in front of you, “If I’m stuck with someone like you for the rest of the semester I might as well be damned.”

That pushed your buttons. “Excuse you? For the record, I’m the one who has to put up with you. And by the way, the document is editable. Unfortunately your tiny brain doesn’t know that.”

It went like that for the rest of the week. More petty quarrels resulting only little of your work done.

If this is how your first week working with him is, what more with the upcoming weeks?

You’d think that the two top students in class being paired wasn’t such a bad idea but you were so wrong with that.

What has fate gotten you into?

On the third week, you’ve had enough with both of you being childish.

You slammed your hands on the table, “Look, Levi. We don’t have to like each other. But for the sake of this project, we need to put our differences aside.”

He looks at you for a moment, then sighed.

“Truce?”

With a hand shake, the quarrels died down. Still, sometimes you can’t avoid having to bicker but, you mind it less unlike before. It was starting to feel like it’s becoming part of your routine.

Then for the first time, you thought that maybe fate finally took pity on you when Levi brought you a coffee and sandwich when you both meet up at the library.

Especially that you haven’t eaten anything yet that day.

What are the odds?

“What’s this for?”

He didn’t answer your question. He just sat down as he took a sip of his black tea.

You were hesitant to accept it, until he says, “Do you want it or not?”

“It could be poisoned for all I know.”

“If I wanted to poison you, I would’ve done that a long time ago.”

With your stomach growling, you gave in and happily ate the sandwich and drank your coffee.

Was that his way of apologizing to you?

The rest of the day felt like a blur.

You were almost certain that he was stealing glances at you from time to time.

When both of you would make subtle eye contacts, you were immediate to look away.

The moment he stood up to gather some text books, you let out a sigh that you have been keeping in for hours.

What game was fate trying to play with you?

Minutes later, he placed the books on the table with a thud. Ignoring whatever was that earlier, the both of you started reading to gather information that can be useful for your report.

An information caught your interest, so you spoke up, “Hey, look at this.” You nudged Levi and showed him the text on the book you’re reading.

“Roughly 450 meters wide and 170 meters tall Asteroid Apophis, expected to hit Earth five years from now.”

You gave Levi a moment to read the text your finger is pointed at, “It is also said that those speculations went down to zero. The odds of it making an impact anytime soon is low. Read again.”

“Still! It’s also said that Apophis will come closer to Earth nevertheless! We can add this information to scare our classmates.”

“We can, but I don’t want to risk our grades for an information that might be erroneous.”

There was silence for some minutes, until you speak up once again.

“That asteroid’s fate to hit Earth centuries from now is sad if you think about it. It’s much more majestic in outer space than in here.”

“And somehow you’re worried about the asteroid being in Earth and not humanity getting crumpled by an asteroid? You’re weird.”

“You’re no fun.” You scowled at him.

He let out a low groan, “Just focus.”

From then on up to the following weeks, you accomplish to finish your report paper with Levi.

To think both of you started on a rough path, who would’ve thought?

Only a week until the day of your presentation, and all that’s left is proofreading the paper and practicing your script.

Then, you’ll part ways with Levi Ackerman.

In some way, you didn’t like the idea of that.

One night, or day, you buried your face on both of your palms, proceeding to rub your eyes.

Then you looked at the time on your phone.

1:28 AM

Past midnight and four caffeines in, yet you still haven’t started proofreading your work.

Just when you thought fate is starting to be kind to you.

With the amount of school works piling up and the final exams just around the corner, everything is overwhelming.

Being a graduating high school student, you have to take care a lot of application papers and prepare a ton of admissions essay.

On fucking top of that, Levi is also messing with your thoughts each day.

You couldn’t get him out of your mind, even if you wanted to.

Is fate so against you it made you suffer like that?

You looked back on your laptop again, trying to focus, and you were sure you see some words in the document being typed in by itself.

Deprived in sleep so much you were starting to have delusions?

You rubbed your eyes in disbelief, and surely enough you weren’t seeing things.

Well, it is possible for someone to edit the document.

But it would be no one other than…

Levi.

Won’t you look at that.

What are the odds you and Levi were awake and both proofreading your work at the exact same time?

Your hands found their way on the keyboard. You add an empty page, and started to type, ‘Levi, is that you?’

You saw a word being deleted, but it stopped midway. You wait, until you saw letters being typed out below your text.

‘Who else, idiot.’

You smiled as you type again, ‘Why are you still awake?’

‘Fixing your shitty errors. What else?’ He responded immediately.

‘You’re mean.’

‘And you’re weird. Why are you awake?’

‘Doing the same thing as you.’

‘Clearly you’re not doing a great job and any progress like I am.’

You let out a sigh as you type, ‘Had a tiring day. I’ll focus, sorry.’

Out of all platforms, you and Levi were communicating in google docs. You wanted to laugh at that.

He didn’t type out a response instantly. You wait for what it seems like twenty minutes or so.

You thought that maybe he has already fallen asleep, but your eyes lit up in anticipation when you saw letters being typed.

‘Get some rest. I can handle this my own.’

‘Are you sure?’

‘Very.’

‘But why?’

‘Don’t want to risk my grades for having a shitty output because my shitty pair is worn out.’

For the first time, you smiled at his remark and you didn’t make any retort.

Before you could turn your laptop off, you managed to catch a glimpse of what he typed out lastly.

‘Sleep tight.’

With that, you doze off with a smile on your face.

You can figure out what you feel for Levi Ackerman later. For now, you’d like to enjoy every bit of time you have with him.

At that point, you weren’t sure what fate has planned out for you.

Time passed by quickly. The day of your final presentation had finally come.

You practiced your script with Levi multiple times, and yet, you’re still a nervous wreck.

You paced back and forth in the back of your classroom, trying to recite your part in your mind.

In 15 minutes the presentation will start, and Levi is still nowhere to be seen.

That adds to one of your reasons for anxiety.

You were almost about to shed a tear when you hear your professor announce that the presentation will start, that is until Levi entered the room at the same time.

You let out a big sigh of relief, watching him make his way to you.

“I don’t know if I should punch you for not showing up earlier or thank you for actually showing up.”

He sat on a chair besides you, “Ran into some couple of problems on the way.”

You sighed once more. You can feel a bit of tense released from your shoulder. Still, you can’t shake the train of what if’s out of your mind…

What if you forget your part?

What if you instantly get mental blocked?

What if someone asks a question that you can’t answer?

What if Levi gets disappointed in you?

What if—

“Hey.”

You shriek as you felt a hand on top of yours. You looked at your hand that is being held by Levi, then you look at him.

His eyes met yours, “You’re shaking.”

Exhaling, “Sorry.” You looked down, bashful.

It was silent between the two of you, then you felt his fingers move to your palm, creating circular motions.

“I’ve read somewhere it helps people stay calm.”

“I wasn’t even going to ask.”

Finally, you maintained eye contact with him. The wave of ease hitting your senses the longer you look into his eyes.

You swore you could’ve melt into his touch.

“We’re in this together. You’ll do great.” He spoke up.

You let out a low chuckle, “Not shitty this time?”

“No.” He gave you a smirk.

He continued to caress your hand. As much as you didn’t want to, he lets go of it when both of you were called up to present.

You shook off the remaining nerves, ready to deliver an excellent report.

Just like Levi said, you did great.

The flow of the presentation was perfect. There were no holes in every information that was put in. The two of you even managed to answer every question that was thrown.

The both of you aced it.

You felt so happy with the outcome you thanked fate for not screwing you up this time.

As the final pair end their presentation, the whole class erupted in cheer for each and everyone’s hard work.

With that, the final science project for the school year has ended.

Also meaning the time you spend with Levi has ended.

It’s funny how ironic this is.

Ten weeks ago, you were yearning for this project to be done so you won’t see him again.

Ten weeks later, you’re yearning for more moments and meet ups with him.

It makes you wonder, is fate making him think and feel the same way as you do right now?

You went to the washroom to freshen up you and your thoughts as your professor gave the remaining time for a break.

Once you went back, there were no signs of Levi in the room.

But, your eyes landed on something that is placed on your table.

Coffee and Sandwich.

The same type of coffee, same type of sandwich Levi gave you after you both called for a truce.

Except, there’s a folded paper next to it.

You took the paper and opened it.

The contents inside made you want to run to find Levi and hug him.

In the note was written,

“The chances of me being paired with you are higher than an asteroid ever hitting the Earth. I like the odds of that.”

So for once you’ve decided, to let fate do its thing and let it lead you.

.

.

.

“That was four years ago? Unbelievable.”

The man besides you mutter, as you both walk together, hands intertwined.

“Four years ago, and I still remember it clear like it was yesterday. Isn’t that amazing, Levi?”

He scoffs, “You and your amazing brain.”

“Time flies so fast. Years ago we were at each other’s throat. Look at us now.”

As the saying goes, fate sure has its weird way bringing people together.

The both of you stop walking, finally reaching the top of the hill. Your breath hitched at the enchanting sight before you.

The sky is a perfect shade of blue colliding with purple.

You allow the gust of wind to sweep your hair as you inhale the fresh scent of air.

Is this what fate is planning for you all along?

“But I don’t think this is fate’s doing.” You say.

Levi only looks at you, expecting you to carry on.

“Us being paired together in that one science presentation, that may be fate’s doing. But us being here? It’s destiny.”

“Destiny?”

You look back at him, “We had the choice to ask our professor to be paired with another classmate, bu—“

“—but we didn’t.”

He finishes your sentence which makes you chuckle.

“We didn’t.” You repeat, smiling at him. “This was our destiny from the start.”

“Since when did you start thinking about cheesy stuff like that?”

“Since the day you left that note after our presentation.”

“That was a moment of weakness.”

You burst out laughing, and Levi smirks…

No, he smiles at you.

“Hey, Levi.”

“Yeah?”

You look at the pool of stars above you, “Do you think the chances of Asteroid Apophis landing on the exact same spot we’re sitting at are high?”

“I thought we’re through this conversation?”

“Oh come on! You’re no fun!”

He lets out a soft snicker, “Well, only fate knows what is stored for that asteroid.”

“Who says something about being cheesy now?” You giggle.

“Oh shut up. You started it.”

“I did.”

“Your ways are rubbing off on me.”

“I try my best. I’m glad it’s working.”

“And this is what I have to put up with for the rest of my life.”

“You love me though.”

“I do.”

In this forever cherished memory, you think that maybe…

Just maybe.

The odds are finally on your side now.
