notes from Encanto: A Tale of Three Sisters

Isabela is jealous that Mirabel isn’t burdened by a gift and can do whatever she wants

would offer her help but thinks that she would snap at her because she ‘always wants stuff done her own way’

sometimes wishes her gift was more helpful like her mother’s

when she makes a mistake she pushes it onto Mirabel because she recognizes that she isn’t allowed to make a mistake but Mirabel is

she made Mirabel a little daisy necklace before her ceremony

she’s nervous around Abuela

“Abuela’s stern voice disrupts the quiet of the courtyard. I’m not sure where she came from but she is standing over Mirabel, watching her do her project. That would make me so nervous.”

Luisa thinks that she’s ‘not supposed to get tired or worn out’ and hopes Abuela doesn’t notice when she does

everyone loves her hugs because she’s strong and she really wants a hug

Isabela made her a flower crown on her ceremony day

Mirabel decorated the nursery’s ceiling with pictures representing family members

Pepa = rainbows, Isabela = flowers, Luisa = boulders, Julieta = arroz con pollo

“I watch Abuela smile at her daughters and her grandchildren. Why doesn’t she smile at me like that?”

apparently they can feel Casita ‘smiling with pride’

“I’m not sure what to do. I want to comfort her because that’s my duty as the oldest sister, but I don’t want Abuela to be angry with me, too.”

Luisa’s room is a gym

“I don’t remember the family having that much fun on my gift day. Mostly everyone wanted to watch me do tricks with my brand new strength. You know –lifting heavy things, moving houses and churches, digging deep holes. Honestly, I felt a little like a performer at a circus. I still do, actually.”

she has the slightest bit of repressed anger/irritation

Mirabel thinks everything comes easily to Luisa and is irritated that she does everything everyone asks of her except what Mirabel asks

Luisa never cries, gets tired, or takes naps

Isabela feels like Mirabel is lucky for not being responsible for anything

she thinks Mirabel is Agustín’s favorite child, and that she needs to try harder for him to like her

she envies Mirabel because she doesn’t need to care about what others think of her

Félix and Agustín are good friends

parallels between Bruno’s room in the walls and Mirabel’s nursery room

Luisa doesn’t believe that Mirabel disturbed Antonio’s gift ceremony on purpose

isn’t emotionally strong and will cry when yelled at, and is impressed that Mirabel can stand up to Abuela

“I back up into the shadows a bit. Just because I’m strong– I used to be strong (don’t cry, don’t cry) –doesn’t mean my grandmother doesn’t frighten me a little, especially when she’s mad.”

Luisa has a panic attack during the final confrontation between Mirabel and Abuela Alma when the house is crumbling down

“I knew it. I knew it was my fault. Why can’t I be everywhere at once?”

she’s afraid of the dark

Abuela thinks Mirabel is similar to Pedro

Bruno’s ostarization from the family was the beginning of the cracks

before Casita was destroyed, Isabela refused hugs

Dolores becomes much more talkative after the destruction of Casita

the doors become representative of the family members’ entire personalities, instead of just their gifts

Lmaoo imagine breaking your arm or whatever and having to go and eat a five year olds cooking.

Just a five year old julieta standing on a stool casita got for her, holding an undercooked yet burnt arepa for you to eat and abuela alma just looking at you pointedly like *eat it and heal yourself and say NOTHING about the taste* because she knew that julieta would get upset if you didn’t like it which would make bruno and pepa upset which would make it stormy and she was not going to be dealing with three upset five year olds because of a bad arepa

Alma: Pepa, please. Clear skies

I know how we like to make fun of Encanto for saying that the madrigals are a big family, and by our standards it isn't. But taken from the fact that the village of Encanto is a closed off village between mountains, the families there probably aren't that big. The madrigals are just big in comparison to a normal family there. It seems like people there just don't have that many children, Mariano seem to be an only child for example.

⚠️Heartbreaking Encanto Realisation ⚠️

So I was rewatching the music video to Dos Orugitas when I noticed something.

We all know that each family members room (with the exception of Mirabel) is unique to them and their likings. Antonio likes animals and his room is a jungle. Isabella likes plants and her room is a garden and so on and so forth.

Well…………look at Abuleas

Heartbreaking Encanto Realisation
Heartbreaking Encanto Realisation

It looks just like the one her and Pedro shared in their old home!

Heartbreaking Encanto Realisation
Heartbreaking Encanto Realisation

It’s not big and spectacular like the others. It’s small and simple and reminiscent of the life she once had. A small bit of familiarity, where after a long day of duties and responsibilities she can go back in time to the life she once had. When she didn’t have an entire town depending on her. When she didn’t know miracles existed because she never needed one. When she was just a young girl living in a small boring completely ordinary house with her loving husband and beautiful children.

Because THAT is what she likes most.

Headcanon for Encanto

(Psst, lemme know if anyone else had the same one, this occurred to me yesterday and I haven’t seen any content similar or the same))

What if the reason that the Casita was breaking was because it sensed Abuela Alma was dying? It wanted her to fix her relationship with her family and reunite Bruno with the family before she passed so she’d rest peacefully. Mirabel would be the one to inherit the candle and take over as the Madrigal Family Matriarch, so in a sense, she was the one who had to fix it from as an outside source. It makes sense, the house responds to her better than anyone (but that could just be because most of the movie is entirely from her perspective) and she talks to it as if it actually speaks to her; she understands it.

This occurred to me when I was listening to Dos Oruguitas, which plays during the scene on which Alma and Pedro’s relationship is recounted to Mirabel, and his death, and then when Mirabel makes up with Alma. The entire song describes the basis of their relationship; how they met, fell in love, and then were torn apart. If you listened to the English version or read the translation, you would find the lyrics “don’t you hold on too tight, both of you know it’s your time to grow, to fall apart and reunite, wonders await you, just on the other side, trust they’ll be there and start to prepare for your tomorrow”. For most of the movie, you’d assume that Abuela was already a butterfly, she had to grow and become stronger for her family, but at the end of the song, once Mirabel and Abuela “reunite” the lyrics change from “oruguitas” to “mariposas”; from caterpillars to butterflies. Abuela emerging from her chrysalis and becoming a butterfly is a metaphor for her preparing to reunite with Pedro, and her “preparing for tomorrow” is accepting that her family is more than the miracle, that they don’t need powers to be safe, and making Mirabel her successor.

It’s really sad and really romantic and I wanted to share it to see if it was just something that was obvious from the context.

Also, if y’all want some Madrigal fanfic (no incest, and no smut for the minors- they can be aged up, but I will absolutely not write any sort of romantic relationships for Antonio bc he’s baby no matter what -bc gross) I’ve got some ideas and I’ll probably be posting my OCs sometime today

As I said in a previous post; I will be creating more Encanto content along with my usual content.

I would like to introduce you to my newest OC, Lombia

Name: Colombia Reyes

Age: 25

Occupation: Dance Teacher

Background: She moved onto the Encanto from the outside, hoping for a fresh start. Once there, she needed help building and establishing her business, which is where she meets the Madrigals. Her and Isabela are fast friends, and she later befriends Mirabel as well. They give her the nickname, Lombia. She was named after her parents love of Colombia and they were very involved in dances and festivals. They died in a tragic accident, which made Lombia lose herself in grief. Deciding she needed to get away from the bustle of the city and find herself and her passions again, she traveled to the legendary mythical town called Encanto, hoping the trip would give her some perspective, only to find out it was actually real.

Back to her life in Encanto, she has a passion for making people happy and feels the best way to do that is through dance, like her parents did for her. Abuela, who values tradition, modesty, and conservatism, does not approve of Lombia, thinking her provocative and lewd. Abuela thinks she’s a nice enough girl, and very pretty, but wishes Lombia would teach and practice more “appropriate” dances.

She’s over at the casita fairly often, and is very likable, but somewhat dorky and is very clumsy when not dancing. She loves aquqfrescas, particularly watermelon and mango. You can usually find her playing with the local children or dancing by the riverside with the flowing water and graceful butterflies.

If you want to actually see her and what she looks like, I have a TikTok account called @onlinelibrarian where I’ve posted a drawing of her!
