Analyzing The Abilities of Characters From The Boys Pt. I

⭐️Starlight⭐️

Annie’s definitely one of my favorites and I think her ability’s one of the more straight forward of the cast. She’s photokinetic, but for the brunt of the show she’s entirely dependent on synthetic/inorganic light. Without this electrical, manmade light she was “powerless”, and at the beginning of Season 4, she fully lost her ability to channel this light whatsoever. This is all symbolic of her perceived reliance on the limelight to stay relevant and important. She was raised on paparazzi shots and baptized in spotlights, so up until more recently that was the only “power source” she had. I like to imagine that now, specifically because the S4 finale didn’t show her draining the car while Hughie was driving, she’s drawing on either natural light to hint at her newfound desire for authenticity and hard truths, or internal light to draw on her own resilience and self actualization she gained through strangling a doppelgänger that taunted her lack of identity.

UMMM HERES my opinion.s on their relationships

butcher - i know Nothing but pain. i love their fucked up brother/found family dynamic but jesus christ its FUUUCUKED it makes me rly sad that hughie canonically reminds butcher (and like all of his family😭) of lenny… they make me sad . i eat doomed family dynamics up for breakfast and lunch and dinner i fear. but also i don’t really um , like butcher all that much so uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

mm - I LOVE THEIR DYNAMIC. mm is what hughie wants butcher to be. mm was there for hughie and is the clearest voice of reason he has for that kid. i love their dynamic and i love how much he cares for hughie and how he shows it hgrgrghdbdb

frenchie - i was gonna say “i think they kiss” but like

they um. they literally have LMFAO ummm but yeah i did ship these two for a while……. not as big of a fan as i used to be but im still down with it

kimiko - SO MUCH UNTAPPED POTENTIALLLLL HRHRGGFHDGDH i think they could have a sweet friendship!!!!

annie - hughie/annie is probably one of the only canon ships i actually like from this show to be honest. it had a rocky start and season 3 kind of. um. season 3’d it up. but i love them. also i hc hughie as having bpd and annie as his favorite person …,

soldier boy - i actually kind of fw soldier boy/hughie as a ship sometimes i can’t even lie here. not a huge fan but i unexpectedly enjoyed it when i came across some content of it. but in the canon i think they had some funny interactions

neuman - i had an au for a bit where she got him to be on her side and he was like a double agent sort of thing and maybe i shipped them before i even knew jack and claudia are together but they had a lot of fun chemistry in the show and i enjoyed seeing them interact

homelander - the only direct interaction i can think of them having atm was when homelander like vaguely threatened him and hughie stepped up like >:/ and homelander just looked at him up and down and went Ouh👀 like what even was that. i personally am not a fan of hughlander but i thought that was fuckin hilarious. i do think itd be fun to see an unpowered homelander getting the absolute shit beat out of him by hughie. i dunno i think itd be satisfying

I find it interesting that the people who keep saying that both Hughie and Annie have a right to be angry seem to be ignoring the fact that not only do we not see Hughie get angry at all, he actually apologizes. Sure Annie has a right to be angry at the situation they are in. She has the right to feel hurt and to express it. But that doesn't mean that lashing out at her boyfriend who had also been hurt is justified. And the thing is, her lashing out would still have been ok if she'd recognized that Hughie did not deserve to be the target of her anger and apologized to him. I would have even taken Hughie and Annie lashing out at each other and then apologizing and talking things out. But no, what we got was Annie lashing out at Hughie for something that was not his fault. You can't just pin this on misogyny and say that people just don't think Annie should be allowed to have feelings and the audience just doesn't like that she's lashing out at their male fave. That's just disingenuous. Especially since Annie is the only one who was allowed to express any hurt or anger in the show itself and got to be portrayed as being in the right.

While the blame obviously goes to the writers for this, let's not pretend that Annie as a character doesn't deserve criticism for her behavior. And this isn't the first time either. Back in s3 when Hughie was doing Temp V, Annie was right to be upset about and was portrayed that way. But Hughie's actual reason for taking the V in the first place (which was the trauma he'd been experiencing nonstop and the feeling of helplessness in the face of supes who could kill him without lifting a finger) was reduced to him just being a toxic male. And then too, we got him apologizing to Annie and Annie saying "I told you so" with no acknowledgement that Hughie's feelings were valid even if he went about it the wrong way. So yeah, while I lay the blame for how Hughie has been treated at the feet of the writers, I'm not going to be mad at people who are upset with Annie and accuse them of being misogynists or call them freaks, idiots etc to which I have seen too many people doing. I love Annie as a character but I'm not going to pretend that she is above criticism.
